These goggles are a game changer! I used them on a powder day in near whiteout conditions in Southern Colorado and couldn’t believe the difference. First the larger lens area really makes a huuuge difference in overall visibility. Also, really appreciated a clasp that is centered on the band. The magnetic changing system is relatively easy to use and I like the extra latch for security that some other mag goggles I’ve tried don’t have. I wasn’t really sure what to expect of the ChromaPop feature, but really noticed it at the top of the lift where conditions were the worst for visibility. I was definitely able to see lines and overall terrain better because the goggles almost took on a yellowish hue. These probably aren’t something I would have initially invested in ... MoreThese goggles are a game changer! I finally went all out on my goggle purchase this time. Usually it's bargain bin, but I'm tired of goggles not performing well. These are really amazing! Really wide view and compared to the Mag I/O, a lot more visibility looking down. However, that visibility does include a bit of lens distortion, so not perfect. The Chromapop everyday red lens is incredible! Handles bright and flat light really well. The lens change is crazy easy when you're not wearing the goggles. With the frames on, lenses come off easily, but I found it's almost impossible to get a new lens back on, as the frame changes shape on your face (I'd say that's a good thing). Mine came with the blue sensor lens for flat light. It's okay. Not as overall impressive as the everyday red lens but worth ... MoreI finally went all out on my goggle purchase this time. This is the only reason I'm giving 4 stars - I don't understand why Smith doesn't allow you to pick and choose the lenses you want with the frames you want? I'd much rather have the yellow lens than the blue sensor. Also, why won't Backcountry list the bonus lens color!? Smith has it on their website! Still, very happy with my purchase!

The Smith I/O MAG XL Goggles are an excellent choice for skiers and snowboarders looking for a high-quality and versatile goggle. Make sure your face is actually really really small for these to fit properly. Your face should be small enough for regular adult sizes to take over your face and/or be slipping off or sticking out too much to the sides of your face. It'll work for bigger faces, but you'll be rocking some major goggle lines for hours afterwards. Having a flatter Asian face with higher cheekbones, these weren't the most comfortable for me. It dug in to my cheekbones and created gaps on the bottom sides that let cold air come through while riding. Also doesn't sit quite well under a helmet but I noticed it fits perfectly under a Smith helmet. The lenses also fogged up when I had my buff on all the way over my nose. Cleared up quickly, but still a bit of a bother during cold days.
Where do I start? I have been a loyal smith costumer for years and absolutely love my I/O’s. I bought these reluctantly as the price was far more than many other goggles but again loved my old ones so thought it would be worth it. First the gum around the band to hold it in place on your helmet comes off on everything! It gets all over your helmet which in turn gets all over everything else. Also whenever you put them in the case it’s inevitable the band will touch the back of your lenses which means you have to rub it off which you are not suppose to do. And worst of all THESE THINGS FOG! The lenses are sealed all the way around so once condensation builds up between the lenses they are shot. And worst of all THESE THINGS FOG! The lenses are sealed all the way around so once condensation builds up between the lenses they are shot. I have dried them for days between uses, even tried using the other lenses they provide, but some days there is no way around it. The I/O’s had a foam between the two lenses which allowed for a lot of air flow and they never fogged once. I lived in telluride for 6 years and skied 80 plus days a year and never had them for. The mags have fogged probably 4 out of 10 days and once they do you can’t see. Save the money and buy different goggles.
Let me premise this with saying these goggles work OK, but, I guess???, without a matching Smith helmet, they let in lots of wind to dry your eyes. Now I have to buy a $250 helmet?????How can a goggle that costs hundreds of dollars have inept instructions? This one does. Junk. They explain how to install the lens, but not how to remove. You want to call me incompetent? I am a mechanical engineer with 40 years of experience with 13 patents. Here are the instructions: "begin by pinching nose of frame together and inserting lens into lens groove around nose bridge. Ok, to pinch the nose requires way more strength than I have. There are no "keyholes" in the lens so worthless. There are no posts in the lens groove so worthless. I can get one side hook to lock in, but cannot get the other side to lock no matter how I bend and try to force it. Also, there are no instructions on how to remove the lens. I ended up just muscling it out, hoping I would not break something. Smith and REI, get real and design correctly and have a real user experience writer tell how to do it,.
Right from putting these goggles on for the first time I noticed that the strap was broader and sturdier than my previous Smith goggles and it holds them to my face better. The goggles fit perfectly with both my Smith and Giro helmets leaving no drafty gap and they don’t fog up, even hiking up in the backcountry. I notice that if I looked directly down in the goggles there is a slight distortion at the bottom of the lens, probably due to the curve of the lens, this is not a problem for actually skiing because we should be looking ahead and not down. Even though these are sized for a smaller face, the lens offers a beautiful wide field of vision which is truly advantageous both in the lift line and on crowded slopes. It is easy and quick to change between lenses and I particularly like the ChromaPop Storm Yellow Flash lens for low light. The photo shows me using the Sun Red Mirror lens in low light and that worked well too in low light but it was terrific for my sensitive eyes in bright sun.
PROS: Love the fit, look, interchangeable lenses, the storage case…and they haven’t fogged up!Yay! I finally own some goggles that fit my face well! (Typically goggles are too large for my face and come too far down on the bridge of my nose.)The interchangeable lenses are easy to change. Hopefully this will prevent me from scratching them while being stored with my gear.CON: Both the mirrored lens and the rose-colored lens have a slight distortion at the very bottom of the lenses. I noticed it in the parking lot the first time I tried these on…but once I got on the mountain it wasn’t a problem. I believe this occurs because the lenses curve back at the bottom creating a distortion. That being said, I don’t have the same range of vision with my other goggles that I have with these goggles…I suppose it’s better to have a bit of distorted vision (at the bottom) versus not being able to see that angle (with my other goggles, I see goggle pads at the bottom, not terrain.) Hopefully this makes sense, it’s hard to explain. I gave 4 instead of 5 stars just because of the distortion. These are pricey goggles, however you receive two lenses and a well-designed hard case to store them in… so they should last longer because of the protection.I’m loving ripping up the mountain with these! (The storm rose flash is great for the typical Pacific Northwest low-light condition days…and the mirrored lenses are perfect for the sunny days! Twofer!
The first thing you’ll notice is the increased visibility from what is called the “Birdseye Vision” or when you look down at the base of the goggle and have a significant more amount of visibility comparatively to a full frame lens. The same is true from looking towards the sides of the lens. Lenses are interchangeable, so the preference for further visibility in low and high resolution situations is unmet by other goggles. Take it from the girl who would go for the best Black Friday snow deal and landed somewhere in the mid-range of goggles. This is an up-front investment goggle for the average individual, to the have the ability to integrate upgrades as needed with lens replacement. The lens change is quick and easy, with no concern of compromise for sealing the lens or having a loose lens. I even ran in these amidst a snow storm and found them to still be anti-fog and for the lens to remain securely attached. The fit is a bit on the larger size for smaller framed faces like mine, however, there is a slight advantage on the hill to feeling like the Mandalorian. Despite the larger fit, the foam sealed to the face without any gapping, again, preventing any sort of fogging. While considerably pricey next to your standard top shelf goggle, consider this a durable investment with future lenses ranging between $100-$125 for replacement (an affordable option after buying the frame for quality).
