I bought this to complement my Sony home cinema kit. Bravia TV, soundbar, sub woofer etc. The UHD 4K discs kept freezing and I couldn’t understand why. An internet search revealed that the Blu-ray player was sending the TV a 4K signal and the TV was then trying to upscale that to 4K too! A YouTube video later and I changed couple of settings on the Blu-ray player ; I have had trouble free viewing ever since. Well, I had a new 4K Blu-ray Disc that had a fingerprint on it and the disc froze. A soft wipe with a microfibre cloth to remove the fingerprint and everything played perfectly. Very happy with the player now the settings have been changed but you may need to do the same to stop it freezing when playing 4K Blu-ray Discs. If you're an avid 4k disc viewer who want's the most our of their 4k movies, than you already know as of today 12/2023 there's really only 2 options for a 4k player disc player give you all the bells and whistles your 4k tv can provide you you're looking at 1 and the other is the Panasonic UB820. Unfortunately distributors are changing and evolving ways of making disks but Sony, Panasonic LG are not manufacturing new players with new parts to address the issue.But with all that said I have been enjoying my time with it and movies look spectacular!

I watched multiple 4K ultra HD movies and experienced no issues. I however ended up purchasing an open box item while they were on sale so I got mine for under $120 but the unit looked brand new. I went ahead and got the geek squad four year protection because of the other reviews in case anything goes wrong with the unit. Walmart is seriously the only place that still stocks the UBP-X700 4K blu-ray player. Other places have moved on to the UBP-X700/M. Ok, it sounds like a trivial nitpicking difference. But the difference is in fact noteworthy for a couple of reasons. Mainly the UBP-X700/M quite simply comes packaged with a 6ft HDMI cable, the UBP-X700 does not. Ok sure, Sony is probably giving a bare bones, super basic HDMI cable with their little bundle offering, but for those with nothing as far as a HDMI cable goes it's something. And given that it's required to be able to hookup the 4K blu-ray player, just like with a standard blu-ray player, it's a welcome bonus. "Rollbacks" are no longer a temporary ordeal, which used to be their version of a sale. So what it amounts to is Walmart's price is approx $190 for the blu-ray player and roughly $10 extra for a necessary HDMI cable. That's the Walmart option. The alternative is paying attention to other places sales and observe for yourself that the bundle with a HDMI cable included can often times be found on sale for as low as (approx) $180. Ultimately making it $20 cheaper. Now, for those who want to scoff at a $20 price difference as though it's not significant enough, fine, have it your way. For everyone else, pay attention to other places sales and USE that $20 price difference to get yourself a 4K movie to start or add to your 4K movie collection.As for the quality of this 4K blu-ray player? It's a Sony and it lives up to their reputation and standards. I think that says a lot.

I also use a 6-way HDMI switch box which handles 4K @60Hz HDR signals, but HDMI leads going into this switch box as well as the HDMI going from this to the Television all need to be of good quality.The unit worked out of the box, meaning I did not need to make any settings to see that it was working; this was a good start. However, it's worth reading the supplied manual as this describes all the various settings and allows fine tuning the X700 to suit the user's requirements. Many of the settings were set to Auto which means the X700 decides the settings to use based on source material and connected equipment. This probably works very well in many situations, but always worth running through the options to get the best from the player. For example I turned off the X700's 4K upscaling option as my television already does a very good job at this. However, I may experiment to see if I can tell any difference when playing a DVD to determine if the X700 upscales to 4K better than my television. With upscaling turned on this will automatically bypass the television's upscaling so nothing need be done from the television.In use I have found the X700 to be very quiet, no loud noises of discs loading or vibrations during playback. The tray loading mechanism although quite delicate works swiftly when loading and ejecting discs, but I do feel that a gentle hand is required when placing discs onto the tray and retrieving discs from it. I always endeavour to place a supporting hand underneath the tray to alleviate excessive downward pressure.In all areas of playing discs, audio and video files this unit covers all my needs very well indeed. The one area that lets it down a little is with the streaming media applications. The X700 is currently limited to a handful of streaming apps including PrimeVideo, Netflix, BBC iPlayer, YouTube and YouTube for Kids, Spotify and Berliner Philharmoniker. Of those, the Berliner offers a free 7 day trial but the Spotify app I find disappointing as it does not allow playing from the X700 but instead requires a Premium account and streaming the music to the X700 from a smartphone (media can be streamed to the X700 from other sources).For me, the lack of applications is a minor point, I purchased the X700 for its disc playing capabilities; the streaming apps are a bonus and as I use a streaming stick so the supplied channels are mainly duplicating what I already have.Time will tell if I encounter negatives from this unit, but so far very pleased with it. I've given 5 stars as I don't really think for the price, it's features and excellent disc playing capability it deserves any less.

Out of its 12 month warranty there was virtually no chance of determing either cause or cure, with no-one wanting to speculate or assist with the faulty brand. I did persevere for over a year and tried replacing HDMI cables, installing with different AV amplifiers and TV's in different configurations with never a fault. I have been a fan of Sony TV's for years and will not buy any other brand. I had 4 Sony TV's until a recent downsize and now have only a 75" and a 55" set. The new UPB-X700 is a brilliant addition. 4K HD and it looks good and works better. It is far superior in almost every way to my last player; from the finish & style of the casing, the design and function of the remote; the ease of operation and the automatic connection with the SONY TV is a bonus. I find the picture clarity is much superior, the upscaling is fantastic, and it's performance and function is easy and just simply works. I can honestly say I have discovered a whole new joy in watching my old DVD's which seem to just come alive again in this player.Five Stars, just because that' what it is worth. Should have bought this years ago.
I bought this Blu-ray player to replace my old DVD player and old CD player.This particular Blu-ray player had the output types that I needed. I used the digital Coaxial audio output to run to my Yamaha stereo receiver since the receiver did not have an HDMI input. I did use the Blu-ray HDMI output to run to my new Samsung QLED TV.I have used this player to play CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs. The CDs play great. The old DVDs look fuzzy as expected but could be watched if highly motivated. The Blu-ray discs look great as expected.All in all, I am happy with this Blu-ray player. I have owned one of these for over 5 years already, so having searched the market for a cheap but decent Blu-ray player to replace a 22-year-old home cinema system and finding not much worth having for a reasonable price, I chose a second UBP-X700 from Sony. Although the apps available on the player are limited, it does provide Youtube which the kids like and to be honest, smart TVs and other devices provide these. Perfomance-wise, the picture is fantastic and it handles all formats and codecs you would want. Obviously 4K and HD Blu-ray discs have a pin-sharp picture, but this player also does a very good job of upscaling SD content from standard DVDs. That said, the UBP-X700 does have a major flaw with stuttering and freezing after about an hour of playing 4K material. There are lots and lots of complaints about this unit on various internet forums. The freezing problem is more pronounced with later 4K materials (Top Gun Mavrick, Dune, etc) that are exemplary HDR souce material. That the complaints continue suggest that Sony haven’t really fixed the problem. The other school of though is that the freezing issues is because of the default upscaling settings that the UBP-X700 is applying to 4K material (even though there is no need to do so). In turn, this is overloading the internal memory buffers and causing the freezing. My advice is that if you do purchase a UBP-X700 is to also purchase a high quality 4K HDR & Atmos disk and run it continuously for a good 8-10 hours to see if the specific unit you have purchased is flawed or not. Taking a unit back for a refund / swap is a lot easier within the first few days after purchase then down the track.

Either way you won't hear the mechanism on this machine unless you have your ear glued to it. It's far quieter than my old Philips was.It's a great player with some extras that I didn't expect; a few apps are included, though - and I would drop half a star for this if it was possible, I was extremely irked to get a message, one week after buying the machine, stating that BBCI-Player is about to removed in July(2024). Yeah I'd love it to have a display and perhaps to be built less plasticky but to be honest, it sits at the bottom of a rack and few will notice the build quality or lack thereof once it is in use. The sound quality is great, but I can't comment on the image quality as I currently only have a fullHD TV. If anyone else is in this boat, don't worry- straight out of the box the machine 'knows' not to output 4k to a non 4k TV and the viewing experience will be seamless.The remote is a joy to use; it's very ergonomic and sits well in the hand with a nice groove for your thumb at the back. It's also very responsive, which is especially welcome if you ever need to enter info such as a password via the on-screen keyboard.Overall this machine is highly recommended for a very reasonable price.
