But it has some minor, and one major flaw. However, many people may not ever encounter it.This receiver is best for someone new to surround sound or someone that wants a set-it-and-forget-it type of unit. With speakers that are properly broken in, the auto calibration is sufficient to set the unit up with only minor adjustments.Sony advertises this unit as a 145 watt per channel 5 channel amp... However, in reading the manual you find out that this is a rating of only one channel driven, at a specific frequency, at a specific ohm rating. The owner's manual gives another rating of 90 watts per channel into 6 ohm speakers. The unit's true ratings are hard to determine and I still do not know what they are but they are estimated to be approximately 50 watts per channel RMS with all five channels driven at the most commonly found speaker impedance of 8 ohms. There are two subwoofer outputs on the back of the unit, but they are controlled as one.The audio from all inputs is clear, bass is strong, and highs are crisp... however center channel vocals are slightly thin and a bit boomy like a sound bar can be. That's the first flaw I was never able to fix, even using several different brand speakers for center channels. The second flaw I wasn't able to fix is that inputs signal are output at drastically different in volume. Dolby signals are quieter, PCM is significantly louder, and analog varies by the source device. Correcting volume differences in the menu did not help as sources can change their signal based on the content being played back (Example: Documentary in PCM at 40, versus action movie in Dolby Digital at 55, and Music at 30 are all approximately the same volume from the same streaming device). Switching back and forth can cause unexpectedly loud volumes.I was able to run the unit at full volume without any noticeable distortion when using a Dolby Digital signal from a Roku. Volume was very loud, but just short of being uncomfortable. I did not run the analog or PCM inputs at their max volume is they presented a greater risk of clipping due to their louder volume. The menu system is good, although a little bit cumbersome. On screen menu is nice but laggy. The inputs work as they should with one remote controlling the entire viewing session when CEC is enabled and devices are connected through HDMI. There are four HDMI ports all capable of 4K 60hz HDR 10 and 3D passthroughBeing a budget unit that came out in 2021, most modern features including HDCP 2.3, eARC, Audyssey, Dolby Atmos, Dolby DTS-X, and 120 hertz passthrough are not supported. If these are important to you, look into the Sony DH760 7.2 channel AVR which has these features (except for Audyssey). There is one optical and digital input each, as well three analog inputs. This provides enough inputs for most people's needs. This unit does not provide a dedicated phono input. This is where I discovered the major flaw. To listen to my record player I purchased an external preamp and connected it with the stereo RCAs. When I began listening to the my records I discovered that Sony decided we do not need a subwoofer with stereo analog input. Reading the manual revealed the only way to enable a subwoofer with analog input is to turn on multi-channel output or one of their extra enhancement EQs. Unfortunately, most of these eqs unnaturally alter the sound and introduce noise. This was a deal-breaker for me and resulted in me purchasing a different unit.Even though I went with a different unit, I would still recommend this unit for someone who wants a simple easy to use AVR at a very good price... As long as they are not wanting to use a subwoofer with an analog input.ProsCheapGreat soundEasy setupEasy to useMany inputsClear BluetoothConsOutput specs unclearNo eARC (yes with DH760)No 120Hz (yes with DH760)Slow onscreen menuNo phonograph inputNo sub with analog sourcesCenter vocals may be thin and boomy

If you are standing directly above the receiver, the text on the screen appears blank. Small gripe, but worth pointing out.

Glad I bought it.

Great quality for the price

Bought this receiver to replace our Pioneer VSX -50 and to work smoothly with our new Sony 43 inch Bravia 4K TV. With a small living room space I now only use a 5.1 setup of large front Klipsch speakers, small Klipsch centre, medium Klipsch surround and 10 inch Energy Woofer. The integration of the Sony tv and receiver is excellent and trouble free. With 4K HDMI ports the picture quality is a perfect as it can be. The sound quality is superb and auto setup with the mic did not need further adjustments. As long as you do not have anything in the way of your speakers, the auto feature discerned the distance of the speakers to within a few inches, quite remarkable. As all TVs and receivers, that I have researched at this price point, also have some possible quality issues, (unless you go into the thousands of dollars), only time will tell if I will have any future issues. But for now at a grand total of $1700 for the Sony 4K TV, Sony 4k receiver and Apple 4K TV, it’s a bargain setup that looks, sounds and works great.I highly recommend this receiver for your entry level or mid level need, and it also won’t break the bank.

Lackluster sound
2 January 2023

I don't know if it was me being a snob, or my ability to properly tune this receiver, but I was disappointed in the sound quality it pushed out to my 3.1 speaker setup with floor standing front speakers. I had upgraded from a 2009 Onkyo high end receiver which pushed out a much more full sound compared to this unit. This was lackluster in mid tone and bass. The setting menus are very plain and somewhat cryptic. You don't have much control over the speakers - no Midrange EQ, can't manually add them (have to use setup Mic). It did the job, it just did not meet expectations. I ended up going back to use my 2009 unit with digital optical out from my 4k TV. At the price, it would be better money spent to get a used higher end model from a few years older.

Poor quaility, fundamental design flaw
11 July 2022

Purchased this Sony receiver with high expectations and boy was I disappointed. Once set up the receiver would shutdown/ reset randomly about every 10 minutes resulting in loss of music playing and bluetooth having to reconnect each time. Simply unusable. When it was on it sounded pitiful - way too much treble and mid range, virtually no bass when connected to high quality Infinity floor standing speakers I've used for years. Only after connecting 2 subwoofers was bass marginally acceptable. Fundamental design flaw - no treble or bass adjustments on unit or remote. Really??? C'mon Sony. Returned for a full refund and bought different brand. If I could give 0 stars for this piece of junk I would.

Run away, unless you like wasting time and effort

I had always by a fan of Sony since the 1980's. That has changed with the purchase of my last 2 products, this amp being one of them. The general functionality was generally good, but 2 HUGE problems make this a very frustrating unit: 1) Every 5 or so uses, the amp will not connect to the correct HDMI input. The ONLY way you can fix this, is by crawling behind the audio cabinet and physically unplugging the AC power for a few seconds. Once it "reboots" it connects as it should. Very annoying. 2) Even though the settings were saved as not to "auto-power on with HDMI input", it still does this. As a result it hijacks the signal, and turns off the TV audio. The unit must be turned off to release the audio back to the TV. Again...very annoying. I have now sworn off Sony ... MoreI had always by a fan of Sony since the 1980's. I have now sworn off Sony products, with the exception of Playstation, as it seems their quality control is better on those units. Sony Audio and TVs have let me down in recent years, and I am done with them.

Solid but lacks adjustability
28 December 2021

Solid system for a bedroom or mid to small room but lacks functions of more expensive units. It does the job and has enough power but you can't dial in the speakers very much compared to some others. I find myself frustrated with speaker calibration often. There is some light adjustment but it's just the frequency and decibel level. There's also no option for different settings to switch between such as movies, games, or music. You have to manually go through menus and change each individual setting each time to get quality sound. There isn't like a selectable preset you can program and switch between.Auto calibration is really bad too. It sounded like an elevator speaker system and had to completely change every speaker setting after calibration. This system replaced an older Yamaha unit that failed after 12yrs but had better sound with lower power output and much better adjustability.Mostly disappointed in this one but it works well enough as a bedroom unit. If you just want surround sound and tweak it a lot on setup you'll be fine. If you want easy adjustability between sound inputs (movie, music, games, etc), you'll be disappointed having to manually change every speaker every time or living with one setting that does not fit all. Next time I'll go to a higher end unit.

Very satisfied and impressed!

I've been using this receiver for about 3 years now and couldn't be happier. Using 4 Bose surrounds and recently upgraded to a Polk center channel and a Klipsch 12" sub. I don't know how anyone could spend thousands more and improve on this. Pure, balanced, detailed and you hear things that weren't there before. Even at low levels there's nothing missing, crank the wattage and this thing rocks. The included microphone for balancing the speakers is a plus. Put on a clean recording and close your eyes and you're sitting on the front edge of the stage. The unit is uncluttered giving you just what you need without a lot of toys that I wouldn't use anyway. The Bluetooth activation is awesome which turns the unit on with your phone or other devices. I find I listen to ... MoreI've been using this receiver for about 3 years now and couldn't be happier. I find I listen to music from my phone more than any other source. (Which as you know has unlimited content.) Performance per dollar is unmatched.

Who Thought of This Thing?

For the record, I've owned several Sony products over the years. I even worked there a few. Haven't owned a Sony receiver in years, but needed to replace my old Pioneer. When I saw this receiver on-line and looked at the specs, reviews, and price, I was thrilled. As another old sound guy from the 70's (seems to be a few here), here is an audio device that gives you just what you need, with no extras. In short...Easy set up.Love the freedom Sony gives you with audio. I can go multiple channel setups on a whim. With large KEF's (+ center), large DCM rears, and a Mirage sub, freedom equates to happiness . Always loved their soundstage. Bluetooth music sounds good tooNow that I'm 100% HDMI, I made the decision to run off the speakers, not the TV. Previous rig was a Samsung Blu-ray with multi channel outputs hooked into the Pioneer. A richer sound than the Sony, I think, but I'm getting a lot more detail in the dialogue now. My rear speakers sound a lot more pronounced. I like it. Will continue to play around. What a bang-up job by my old company. Make the guy who thought this up CEO
