AVR-S650-R Review (don't buy a refurb)

When I decided to upgrade my system to 4K, I naturally decided on another Denon, so in December of 2020 I bought a refurbished AR-S540BT directly from Denon. It worked well, even though it was a refurb and a bit stripped down (only three 4K inputs, for example, but that's all I needed for my 4K Blu-ray player and 4K Roku ─ my cable TV is 2K).After I bought a new subwoofer (SVS PB-1000 Pro) for my system last summer, I felt like the sound was a bit off and decided in November of 2021 to upgrade my AVR to a refurbished AVR-S650H to take advantage of its Audyssey equalization to smooth out the low frequencies. After I unpacked it and tried to set it up, the firmware reported that my speakers weren't connected. After confirming that they were connected, I tried rerunning the set-up with the mic from my 1612 (which looked identical), and that worked. Then I got a message that my subwoofer wasn't connected, but I figured out that only the subwoofer-1 output wasn't working, and I was able to complete the setup using the subwoofer-2 jack. After testing out my new 650, everyone who listened to my system (including me) said the same thing: that the dialogue was nearly unintelligible, as if the sound were coming through a cardboard tube from an empty roll of paper towels. My front speakers are placed behind an acoustically transparent screen, and even though I've not had any problems with the speakers before, I tried a suggestion from a recent article in Sound & Vision magazine and moved the speakers to a foot behind the screen. It made no difference in the sound. Then I tried shutting off the Audyssey equalization and tweaking the sound manually. I found that the sound was better if I boosted the 2 kHz frequency to its max (+6 db), but it still didn't sound nearly as good as what I had gotten before the 650. I even tried running the audio “flat” ─ no Audyssey, equalization or tone adjustments. It still sounded like the sound was coming though that cardboard tube.Ultimately, I reconnected the 540, and I can finally enjoy my home theater again (altho my bank account suffered some damage).

So I thought it might be nice to have this available to me in a new receiver, as well, which this one does, and it works wonderfully. So the good news is, everything to do with this receiver works, again, flawlessly. The little mic setup for evaluating speakers and placement, including the actual 'setup program' built into the receiver...fantastic. Even checks phase. Sounds great. Works great. The GREAT news, though, is that apparently manufacturers have been working a little bit harder in terms of MUCH more easily allowing control over other devices. So the new Samsung TV and remote were able to immediately detect and control the Denon, do all the various routing magic (and also control a Sony blu-ray).The whole thing just really couldn't have been much easier. I have achieved the impossible dream: one single remote to control the TV, over the air channels, streaming channels, DVD, and audio for the whole shebang. Nirvana. So I can't recommend this receiver much more highly. I was gonna pop for the next unit up, but really have no need for more speakers, and while I probably would've appreciated the extra power/output - cause there's no replacement for displacement where it comes to amps, and this is coming from a musician that's all about really big amps - this unit is plenty powerful, sounds great with my entirely adequate speakers, and was again, just so reasonably priced.Buy with confidence! Just my opinion.

DOES NOT WORK WITH ALEXA
22 September 2021

I bought this receiver in May of 2020 and it worked great with Alexa. Then in August of 2021, it stopped working with Alexa. I called Denon and they said they are working on the problem. Today, 9/22/21, I checked the Denon web page and it says the following. For models with HEOS Built-inSome users experience an error when they ask Alexa to play Amazon Music on a product with HEOS Built-in. While we are working on a fix, you can start music with the HEOS app and other Alexa commands for volume and tracks still work. If you get a repeated “Unable to Play Media” error in the HEOS app, please power cycle the HEOS Built-in device. We apologize for any inconvenience.I bought this receiver because it worked with Alexa. This is very disappointing!

Quality receiver with useful features

This was my first Dennon purchase and even though it was a refurbished product i had no reservations coming from the manufacturer. This was a big upgrade from my 15 year old Sony receiver. I loved my Sony receiver, but this Dennon receiver is great! It has plenty of power for each speaker. I connected 2 Subs and it has great bass. Dennon being known a little higher quality in music is one of the reasons i went with them over Onykyo. The wi-fi connection is wonderful as streaming wi-fi from Spotify this way has better quality than Bluetooth. It has plenty of HDMI'S so it's future ready. Setup was easy. I didn't need 7.2 so that is why i went with this model. If you are looking for great sound and useful features I recommend this model. Unable to set up and understand the controls.

I am reluctant to give my comments as they are primarily negative. I am a 77 year old engineer-trained techie that has dabbled in high end sound gear since 1966. And I have to say this machine is about as far from "plug and play" as anything device I have ever purchased. I have had it for about 10 days max and I haven't scratched the surface of what it is supposed to do. I have worked out some of the controls but I'm still waiting get decent sound from this receiver.First of all I apparently don't have a TV that has the latest HDMI technology need to use the setup steps via the TV monitor. Trying access control it (especially tone controls) from the receiver itself was futile. Finally, after days of reading I managed to configure the Denon app and the Heos app so I am now somewhat able to configure some tone controls and the tuner. But it took me almost a day to configure the amp and home network to do this. There is only one or two paragraphs at the back of the manual that aided me to do this. And philosophy of having separate tone settings for each input is awkward and unnecessary. Oh for the days of tone control and balance knobs!Due to limited HDMI tech I tried to use optical connections from TV to the amp. It doesn't work, at least for streaming inputs like Firestick. I have to use analog phono cables to hear streaming TV audio output. And it ends up coming out the cab/sat input. Only the antenna TV sound is heard from via "TV Audio" input button.I still can't connect to my subwoofer via subwoofer cable. It just won't work. I am forced to run the subwoofer via the front speaker outputs. I would rather not wire the speakers that way.Which leads me to believe that the subwoofer outputs won't work because it can't "when the whatchamacallit is enabled." This device has a bunch of features that apparently don't function if "this or that is enabled!" Like the so-called equalizer for instance.Controlling the device from an app is a nice idea (and it is the only way I can "control" the settings") but the basic architecture of the controls is just wrong. It is arcane. It needs to be simplified. Especially the setup mechanism. It just didn't function. It possibly may work better if I had a more up to date TV with more HDMI input and outputs but that can wait. All I want now is just to get some decent sound out of the amplifier. After another week of fumbling around I shall try to get some tech help from you folks but for right now, I'm overwhelmed.

Very good receiver, full-featured and easy setup
23 February 2022

Very easy speaker setup using Audessey. I have some acoustic challenges and the automatic process worked very well.Other setup steps were just as easy. Video from my source devices through the receiver look great, no added noise or other artifacts. Full video resolution.Sound is great, but I'm not stressing the audio much with a 3-channel sound bar. One aspect stands out: the roll-off of bass frequencies from the sound bar to the subwoofer is perfect.Overall very pleased with the unit especially for the price.

Vy Good Sound. Company support (HEOS) frustrating
20 July 2021

Overall, this is a very nice and excellent *sounding receiver. Setup is pretty easy, good remote and the on screen display (If attached to a tv) really helps in setup as well. The issue I have is the HEOS function in both the receiver and the Denon app. The Denon remote app works well, but the HEOS function as well as the HEOS app is frustrating. Namely, you cannot import playlists in any way and you must create them using HEOS only which is slow, and cumbersome. Further, the playlists are limited to a ridiculous 300 tracks!! This has been the case for many years so it appears little support is offered by DENON. If you just want a good sounding, entry level box, this is a good if not very good choice. If you want to use some of the "features" it offers, make sure ... MoreOverall, this is a very nice and excellent *sounding receiver. I am somewhat disappointed as the HEOS app and receiver functionality are pretty good otherwise, just not much support from the manufacturer for HEOS.
