Awesome Receiver - AVR-X1700H-R

Amazing! The sound presence that this receiver provides is simply amazing. I use Roku for streaming services and the colors and sound are fantastic. I currently run a 3.1 surround sound and it's really give a 3D sound to sports and movies. Definitely a step above the Onkyo in the same price range. For the price this receiver rocks. Next, ordering surround sound speakers to complete 5.1 The setup for this is really nice with the on screen settings. Yes you need to understand how to setup your speakers, but it also has a wizard type guide to help you with that. I'm a pro tech so I understand how to set it up. There are a lot of options and some of it will depend on your tv and personal preferences. One note, make sure you buy quality HDMI cables, ones that can run 8K ... MoreAmazing! Weird But eventually that problem went away (and I don't have a new Earc tv, so maybe that was the problem).2) This is more a criticism of Dolby/DTS HD itself, but I'm not at all impressed with Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio (as compared to DTS 5.1.) Whenever I play a bluray movie in Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio it sounds rather dead/flat because all the vocals come out of the center speaker, and you mostly just hear sound effects and music from the other speakers. This also made it harder and more unnatural to hear the dialog - especially when no matter where people are they come out of the center speker. We had to revert to "Multi Channel Stereo" so we could hear the vocals out of more than the center speaker, and to feel like we were surrounded by sound. But Multichannel stereo is a bit brighter/harsher on the ears, so that's not perfect either.3) it doesn't always turn off my hdtv so I have to use more than 1 remote.Overall verdict: better than my old DTS 5.1 AVR, and the Audyssey is nice, but I don't think it's worth spending a lot to upgrade to Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio. But I was happy to get it onsale here on the Denon website.

The non X do the regular Audyssey microphone test in fewer locations but that doesn't really matter. What does matter is the option to offset the dynamic EQ at volume levels lower than reference which isn't an option on regular receivers. This made all the difference because the standard Audyssey programming is too 'hot' on the low frequencies. Meaning too much bass bump which takes away from the audio track. This made all the difference because the standard Audyssey programming is too 'hot' on the low frequencies. Meaning too much bass bump which takes away from the audio track. With any receiver you need the dynamic EQ, even in a sound controlled space, to do some light tweaking so you can make out dialogue and music, but then you have the Dynamic Volume which helps tremendously when you watch at normal listening levels when it gets loud (since almost no one watches at reference, almost). The only problem is the dynamic volume causes some ear fatigue with the processing and even in medium and light it's not quite tight or sharp.Enter the Reference Level Offset. This was incredible, it removed that highly processed feel to the sound which means I can now turn back on the dynamic volume and yet bass is not muddy or boomy just tight. I prefer dynamic volume on low and reference offset of +10. Had a lot of trial and error until I found that for my space. So that's the good news. The bad news is, this amp is the least powerful amp they sell. My old amp was 95w+ and this is only 75w. Not important for total SPL it's important for transitions, there isn't that grunt in reserve that I'm used to and if this was a cheap amp that's fine, but it's not. It does make a weird crackle noise when using the app to raise and lower volume quickly which doesn't happen with the knobs or remote or prior denon receivers so that's new.The other bad news is the quick select buttons were removed. For kids who just want to press game and go you can't. You have to either go twist the knob until you get it right or dig up the receiver remote which is silly since that defeats the purpose of the CEC feature. If I were to make a suggestion, Denon should make a stereo or 3 channel (center) amp with all the bells and whistles as this and use that extra space in the chassis for a 100w+ amp per channel. No need for surrounds or atmos or anything. Would prefer just a super high end stereo amp with the Audyssey room correction software.

I bought this as soon as it came out from the Denon site, I got it before the holidays of 2021. I've now had it nearly a year and the 1 issue I've had and still have, is switching from Xbox Series X to PS5 to Google Chromecast as well as within those devices starting a movie or game that Kicks over HDR or DV, the AVR, DAILY, can't handle the switching seamlessly. I will get the Format not supported screen while I hear the sounds coming through, so I turn the AVR off and on or swap Inputs back and forth and its fine again. But it happens daily, might be able to turn on a game, switch to a movie, then after the movie back to a game and I get the error. So, I think the ALLM or VRR, with the AVR over eARC is half baked. I hoped for a firmware update to come this past year before posting this review so I could give it a 5 star, but this is just annoying and on top of that, to get the best sound your kind of pushed to buy their $19.99 app in order to turn off a setting which had the sounds out of the box feel like they were coming from the box. If i didn't buy the app, the setting is locked out unless we were to buy the next tier of AVR's. Other than those, i love this AVR, sounds are big, smooth, loud, and with Atmos, i love it! Hope a firmware will come out soon which will address the Switching of inputs on the AVR and it will be perfect.

I've owned 4 Onkyo receivers over the last 15 years. Before purchasing this Denon I purchased the Onkyo TX-NR6100 and it was by far the worst ever. I played with it adjusting everything to make it come close sounding to my last Onkyo. It sounded so bland and powerless. I do 5.2.2 set up and even with 2 subs it made John Wick sound like an episode of Mr Rogers Neighborhood. Normally the bass would rumble to the neighbors house and now it would barely come through. I decided to start from scratch, rewire, and do setup again. Same thing and gave up after a week of frustration. After a ton of research (which is very hard to come by, recommend Forums versus online reviews as they don't seem to legit) I was between this Denon and a Yamaha and ended up going with the Denon ... MoreI've owned 4 Onkyo receivers over the last 15 years. Great and accurate Audyssey set up, I barely had to adjust settings. Now for the same test John Wick. Night and day for sure, my Atmos speakers worked better than ever, bullet casings falling every where around me, the subs were on point as well.

I am very happy with my selection and I am sure you will be too.John M

Nice receiver - unfortunate problem
5 March 2023

I liked this receiver quite a bit. The sound quality was very good for both music and home theater and the price, for what it gives you, was very good. Had I not had a problem in selecting the stereo mode to listen to music, I would have kept it. The problem was, if I selected the "Stereo" mode to listen to music, it would only play through my left and right speakers and not my subwoofer. According to the user manual, it should play both left and right speakers as well as subwoofers when the stereo mode is selected. I tried to figure it out myself and called Denon technical support for assistance also. Upgrade from Denon 1910
8 December 2022

I upgraded from a old receiver 1910. Reason for upgrade : USB 2.1, BT, Wifi, Future ready. I had not much options in the region i am, so did some review and settled for the x1700H. After the setup and running audessy, straight out the sound quality was much CRISP, LOUDER and the separation from the speakers was distinctive. Denon 1910 i had to run the volume control high as 70+ to get good sound. Now with around 40+ the sound is loud and also the details are audible. Most of the media tested was app based Netflix, amazon, Youtube Music, TuneinHD. What i dont like: 1: The jump in the volume control 2: The HEOS App 3: The dos command like interface for audessy and setting. Hence the 4 stars. What i like: Its future ready and i hope i wont have to change the receiver ... MoreI upgraded from a old receiver 1910. Reason for upgrade : USB 2.1, BT, Wifi, Future ready. Very pleased

I purchased this to replace an older model (AVR-X1100) that was still going strong but had lost its information panel display lighting for the second time. I fixed the problem once before by replacing a fuse but no luck this time around.A big selling point for the 1600 was the phono inputs, which my 1100 lacked. So this meant I could do away with the preamp to my Cable/Sat analog inputs that added more clutter and wires to my setup. I also now have a correctly labeled remote control device selector.I did not get good settings from the Audyssey microphone setup so I did everything manually -- speaker distances and levels, equalizer, and crossovers. Because of my prior experience with the 1100, it did not take me long to come up with settings that sound rich and pleasing while having nice percussive pop and minimal harmonic distortion. (I am sure I will continue to tweak, which is part of the fun.)The major advance between the 1100 and 1600 is the addition of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. I am not sure that I want to or can add Atmos speakers due to room limitations. I also have a lot to learn about these formats before I can really say if DTS: X will make a discernible difference. This said, movie sound is just as good as on my previous unit and may have even more immersive qualities. My only nitpick is that my go-to Dolby Surround setting for much of the (non-live) vinyl music I like doesn't offer as much flexibility for setting the spatial spread of the three front speakers as the 1100 had. (Why did they change that?) I also wish this receiver had a Concert Hall sound parameter for classical music. I have to tweak the Rock Arena setting for this purpose. These minor issues aside, I am very satisfied with this purchase. I just hope they've fixed that display fuse issue, evidently a common problem on the 1100.

X1700 is a great value

This is my first Denon AVR. It does not disappoint. Pretty easy to set up. Plenty of ways to customize the sound you are looking for. The sound signature is on the neutral side. The equalizer is available but doesn’t do much. The Pioneer Elites give much better results using the equalizer. I am still working with all manual settings and have not done Audyssey yet. The best thing about the X1700H is how it does surround sound and the amount of control you have over each speaker. The experience is exceptional with my 5.1 def tech speakers and SVS PB 1000 sub. For sports I use multi channel and you fell like you are at the game. I am still playing with the virtual atmos and have mixed results. Everyone complains about the out dated gui but honestly it’s not that big a deal. The Denon app is very good and has hardly any lag. Overall, considering the price and free earbuds with 3 year warranty and customer service you can actually talk to without waiting, this is a good value compared to anything else in this price range.
