Glad to see Sony using as much recyclable cardboard in the packaging of their large screen TVs. Easy to unpack and my 55ā€ version easy enough to remove and set up by myself. The two diamond shaped feet can be clicked in to place either far apart towards the edges of the screen or towards the centre if you have a narrower stand. I used the former. The sitting height of the TV on the feet can also be altered, (higher setting) so you can leave enough space beneath the screen to place a sound bar below the screen without it being obscured. You can of course, also wall mount the screen. You notice the lovely virtually zero bezel screen with a brushed dark aluminium frame and the now standard Sony chequerboard patterned back. You can of course, also wall mount the screen. You notice the lovely virtually zero bezel screen with a brushed dark aluminium frame and the now standard Sony chequerboard patterned back. You also notice the Matt finish anti-glare/anti-reflective screen covering. The TV measured 122.2cm wide and 74cm tall on its feet. This full array LED TV I believe has around 80 separate dimmable zones, and contains the latest ā€œCognitive Processor XRā€ to give an excellent quality picture.Initial set up was simple but the TV did not connect to my WiFi network initially but this was because the WiFi was set to ā€œOffā€ by default on my model. Once turned On, it connected within seconds. App set up (YouTube,iPlayer,Amazon Prime) took around 30 minutes ( software updates etc). This model comes with 2 remotes. Both fairly standard feeling in the hand. One more comprehensive type and a smaller nicely weighted everyday remote with direct access buttons for streaming services such asNetflix, Prime, Disney+ and ā€œBravia Coreā€- more on that later!Initial disappointments when watching TV: Although the sound is ā€œgoodā€ for a rather slimline 55ā€ TV, it lacks any real base. Not a problem for me as I was able to plug the TV in to my 5.1 speaker surround set up, and then it was excellent as expected. Only 2 out of the 4 provided HDMI inputs are the full ā€œ2.1ā€ type which is still a bit of a disappointment in 2023. And bizarrely this 55ā€ model has the worst efficiency in the range, coming in at Grade G. Bizarrely the 65ā€ is Grade F and the 78ā€-98ā€ versions Grade E. Not a biggie in the grand scheme of things in terms of running costs but still a surprise. Now for the Good Bits: Gaming is available at 4K/120fps with VVR available and a low latency mode for instant response and no lag. The ā€œXR Surroundā€ mode gives 3D like effects from the built in speakers.4K footage is the best I have seen on a TV so far. Not just the clarity and smooth motion but the phenomenal HDR, so specular highlights are not blown out and blacks/overall contrast are excellent. ā€œThe Matrixā€ in 4K has never looked better! This is what it’s all about! Linked with a decent surround sound system it becomes totally immersive. The menus and remote response are snappy with barely any lag so it has a good processor on board.Terrestrial TV is also excellent. Watching Wimbledon tennis with fantastic sharpness, colour and sound is a pleasure.ā€œBravia Coreā€: This is included with my particular X90L model. This is Sony’s own high quality streaming service and provides lossless 4K streaming at around 80Mb/sec. This is a far higher bitrate than Netflix etc that tend to be around 20Mb/sec. My full fibre broadband connection supports this higher stream speed easily. It is meant to be as good a picture and sound as on a physical 4K disc. The package includes many of Sony’s back catalogue of films and even newer ā€œIMAX Enhancedā€/Dolby Atmos encoded films. You sign up for free and get 24 months unlimited access for these movies but some of the newer Sony films you need to use a ā€œcreditā€. But I have been provided with 10 free credits to use- 1 per film, also for the duration of the 24 month membership. Sony have not yet announced how much it will cost at the end of the 24 month period as it has only just been released. Or if I can renew my credits and at what cost, there is no information as yet.I decided to watch Brad Pitt’s ā€œBullet Trainā€ movie using one of the credits and I have to say I was slightly blown away with the picture and sound quality. It really is high quality 4K like streaming. This package was the final cherry on top of the cake. I am looking forward to many more hours of TV and movie watching on this TV.

The un-boxing is relatively easy. However, I was disappointed in the use of a considerable amount of polystyrene. The tv must be placed face down if you are inserting legs. In our case we are using a stand, so the legs are required. They are adjustable in height for the use of a Sound Bar. This is very easy, remove the screws from the clips, adjust to the required height, return the screws and then insert into the base of the tv. The legs can be utilised in a narrow or wide setting. This is an improvement on my previous tv as the wide setting was the only option available in the UK. Regarding the legs, their appearance is very utilitarian. There is very little aesthetically pleasing about them.Fortunately, the positioning of the HDMI sockets and LAN cable socket are in the same position as on my old tv making things easy. The mains aperture is on the opposite side. Unfortunately, Sony have not supplied ā€˜Cable Tidies’ for the legs for this model, unlike my old one. This is disappointing as they were very useful and made everything that little bit neater.Setting up the tv is a case of switching it on and following the on-screen instructions. It is a very simple process; Google is the go-to for setting up the tv. If you have a Google Account, you log in and it even registers the tv for you. We use a Sky Q box, and the pairing was seamless. It is easy to tweak the settings for your optimal sound and vision experience. I found the best setting for the picture was Vivid and the Power Saving option switched off. This gives a vibrant crystal-clear picture. I found that any power saving option made the picture too dim. Once you have completed this sit back and enjoy. The upscaling is very good and even enhances those tv programmes from the 1970’s.For my initial assessment for UHD picture quality I watched the Cricket (Ashes) and then comparing that to Top Gun Maverick (Both in UHD) the picture quality was truly excellent. A distinct improvement from my old tv. The sound is an improvement too and is more immersive than my old tv.Gaming wise I only have a PS4 console, this was easy to connect and pair to the tv. The image quality is greatly enhanced thereby improving the experience.Apart from a couple of very small moans (Use of polystyrene and lack of Cable Tidies for the legs and the design of the legs) this Sony Bravia X90L XR is a huge improvement. The option of wide or narrow leg placement makes it more versatile. The improvements in picture quality are simply massive. Couple this with the improvement in sound quality you have a great tv and one that I highly recommend.

I have purchased the 55 inch model which is absolutely stunning it has replaced my previous 3 year old tv and new technology never stops improving the picture and sound quality. Although I use a soundbar I have used the tv speakers and the voice is coming from the centre of the television with background sounds coming from around the unit, using the sound settings will further enhance your listening, to adapt it to what you’re watching whether it’s sport, music and movies. With the sound bar it enhances the sound even more with the added bass and Bravia sync turns it into a true cinema sound. The factory settings seem to be absolutely spot on but with the vivid setting it just explodes the colours and contrast. In use, the menus are quick and clear and all the most popular smart apps are present and correct. App load times are good and generally the TV is very responsive and pleasant to use.Initial Picture PerformanceOut of the box picture performance is really very good indeed. Colours are vibrant yet natural, contrast is good, and the black levels are great for an LCD panel. Of course other panel technologies are better but at this price point you would be very happy.Motion handling is nearly the best I have ever seem. Details remain clear, and motion is smooth and natural. There is never any hint of soap opera effect. The TV did not require much picture calibration at all and I think would be entirely satisfying as delivered. The only slight issue I have, and it may not be an issue at all, was I felt when fed with Dolby Vision material, the TV set the general picture to a much warmer tone than I would prefer. Perhaps this can be adjusted. If Sony were out to prove there is life in LCD yet, they have certainly achieved this.Sound PerformanceI don’t expect much from the sound of a LCD TV and of course there was an absence of useful bass yet the rest of sound was pretty good and can go quite loud. What was impressive was the way the TV was able to extend audio effects way beyond the width of the screen.SummaryAt this price point, the X90L (55") is a winner. A combination of quality and features that I think is hard to beat.

I do love Sony products, they are always well constructed and mostly do reflect the price point. I have owned numerous Sony Tvs and their other products in the past and have always been thrilled with them, they really do stand the test of time. The 55X90L I bought within the first couple of weeks of launch blew me away with it's build quality, first impressions are important and after coming from a "Flagship" 49XH950 set I purchased a couple of years ago (which I still love and use in another room) I was worried that a "High-Mid Range" wouldn't be able to compete with the build quality. Very impressive indeed with very little sway ...Ā MoreI do love Sony products, they are always well constructed and mostly do reflect the price point. How wrong I was........this TV is SOLID, almost like a huge chunk of metal with a screen running through it. and reassuringly very heavy. Very impressive indeed with very little sway when it's on the stand. The features of the set are excellent, I especially appreciate the new Game menu and I've not noticed any input lag in game mode. The 120hz panel is great as is the HDMI 2.1 features. Movies likewise look amazing on this set, so much detail in the picture and black levels with very little of the "Blooming" effect. Screen uniformity is another huge plus, no dark patches over the screen or the dreaded "Banding" which is common on other sets in the same criteria.HDR looks brilliant on the TV, blacks remain deep but the highlights really pop.Now on to the only negative...........The set is BRIGHT!!! In a dark room it is really hard to get a picture that won't burn your eyes. Interestingly this only affects SDR (non HDR) content, HDR actually looks really bright but natural in the dark and can actually get dimmer than SDR via the brightness setting. I understand that some living rooms are very bright and it's brilliant SONY cater for these customers but when you buy an expensive TV of this size and price it should make great viewing for film nights in the dark, instead the viewer will have to deal with migraine headaches and severe eye strain. I have always used BIAS lighting (lighting behind the screen illuminating the wall behind it),this really helps with contrast and preventing eye strain. The problem seems to be with the panel brightness and light sensor. In comparison to my 49XH950 the 55X90L is MUCH brighter. The 950 is a bright panel when it's needed to be which is great, but when you set the light sensor to ON with that set you can still dim the brightness down in gradients of 5, all the way down to a level 0 that barely provides any contrast but the option is there, I normally set it to 10-15 and it's perfect. When the light sensor detects little ambient light it seems to basically go into "Night" mode, essentially dimming the screen instantly by around 20% while still allowing even lower brightness settings.Meanwhile on the 90L with the light sensor set to ON the brightness drops very gradually and won't go down any further than 10 which seems to be the same brightness as level 35(ish) on the 950. This is a huge difference and I do wonder about the long term effects on the eyes. With both of these TVs I set power saving to LOW for reference. Reducing contrast helps it to be more bearable on the eyes but at a huge loss to image quality. In effect I could happily view the 950 in a dark room for hours on end with contrast set to around 50, but with the 90L with contrast set to 15-20 I get eye strain and headaches after 20 mins of viewing. I REALLY do hope SONY will update the TV via software in time to let the user have more dimming control over the brightness, if they did this it would truly be a 10/10 set and would be almost legendary I feel. In its present state though it severely impacts night time viewing which is a huge part of movie watching and game playing and is making me wonder whether to sell the set as I can't return it as there are no faults at all.

Fantastic picture

The 55 in was an upgrade from our 43 in Sony and the picture quality is a massive improvement, bright, vivid colours and a good range of contrast. It was easy to setup and attach the 2 legs we chose the inner option to fit our smaller TV cabinet. Connect wired to the router, and AV amplifier was a simple swap from the old TV, and an optical cable to my oticon TV adapter for my hearing aids. Two remote controllers were included one smart handset with Netflix, Disney and Amazon prime direct buttons, the other was traditional channel numbers etc. I bought the optional Bravia Cam too. After 4 months we absolutely love the larger brighter screen and the smooth user interface. We use an aerial youview for free channels and Netflix 4K subscription. Great Sony processing, color, motion, and upscalin
19 August 2023

Great display and Sony always makes the picture look good even on older content that isn't 4k hdr. Colors are great even before adjusting. Motion is great as well but I've adjusted one tick on some motion controls just for my preference. Better than all the others at this price for various inputs. You can see why OLEDs are a step up if you watch side by side, but this TV looks great anyway. The screen is glossy so in a room with bright windows and other lights it would be annoying.Sound on this is very interesting because it is very immersive. No bass though. If that's a problem you will need external sound and Sony sound bars can let you use both TV and sound bar at the same time.

Great Tv

The Sony XR-55X90L replaces my old XH90 Bravia. In found that any power saving option made the picture too dim. Once you have completed this sit back and enjoy. The upscaling is very good and even enhances those tv programmes from the 1970’s.Moving on to watching the Cricket (Ashes) and then comparing to Top Gun Maverick (Both in UHD) the picture quality was truly excellent.

Sony 55 inch UHD television

I had a Sony 43in 4k television that was 4 years old, and this Sony 55in 4k is much superior in every way. The unboxing was easy due to the perforated cutouts allowing the whole side to be opened without fear of damage, easily removed from the box. A simple inserted the 2 legs and the television was ready to replace our original. The plugs change over took a few minutes and the TV put in place on the wooden cabinet. I also used the optical cable to feed into my AV amplifier. On power up the on-screen instructions were a great help, setting the sound system and data link to my broadband router via a cable. The picture quality in HD source via the aerial is amazing. I setup the inbuilt apps for Netflix and other streaming services. The picture quality in HD source via the aerial is amazing. I setup the inbuilt apps for Netflix and other streaming services. So I had a 4K UHD source, this was the best television I had ever owned, rich colours and fantastic contrast. It was Wimbledon 2 weeks so we watched using the iPlayer in UHD, wow it was incredible, the action was crisp and smooth, the colours and textures had so much detail. My wife a tennis fan was extremely impressed and the new television gave and immersive experience. There were 2 remotes supplied one a traditional full button and a sleek one that had the streaming services like prime video and Netflix with a dedicated button, making a quick access to the app. I've had the television for over 2 weeks and tried a variety of UHD quality pictures and the new television is far superior to my older 4k Sony. The set looks great with a virtually invisible frame as the screen go within a few centimetres to the edge. The 2 legs can be fitted in 2 positions both giving a sturdy support to the panel, and look good. The youview program guide is clear and shows 6 lines of channel detail, very easy to use.

The tv was easy to unpack, the legs just push in no tools needed, and plug in the hdmi’s and power. Turning on for the first time and following the on screen setup instructions was straight forward and did not take too long, connecting to the Wi-Fi went without a problem. I first watched a blu-ray and was straight away impressed by the quality of the picture. The colours were bright and sharp, the white against black looked fantastic without any halo effects. Bright section on a mostly dark screen looked great. Really dark parts of the movie stood out well and did not blur into a dark screen. Trying the different modes allowed for different preferences but I settled with the cinematic view and have enjoyed several movies now. The sound I found to be of good quality, dynamic and clear with no unwanted vibration, playing with the menu settings again to alter the sound was easy and straight forward and I again settle on cinema as my choice. The tv menu’s have plenty of choice and are easy to navigate through. Next was google tv which again setup was straight forward and was easy to use, with access to movies and apps. You can set the tv to start up with google tv which I found very useful. The only annoyance to me was the two remote controls, one normal and one Bluetooth. I have a tv, Blu-ray player and a Set top box. That’s four remotes just to use the tv, granted the Bluetooth remote does work with the set top box mostly, but it’s a pain having so many remotes. The tv itself looks great with its very thin frame. This is a good quality mid range tv and I’m extremely pleased with it.
