I rented this lens (and an A74 body) before purchasing both. I have used it for almost one year. It is amazingly sharp, well built, and has a smooth internal zoom with a short throw from 200 to 600. Since I also use (and love) Nikon D850, I recently got the Nikon AF-S 200-500 as a potential replacement (to get to a one camera setup). I had to send it back after testing both because the Sony was sharper in every situation both at large and small apertures. The only downside to this lens is that it does not have a larger aperture like f4, but of course that would make it ridiculously heavy and expensive. But now, believe it or not, I shoot with the very sharp Sigma Sport 150-600 EF (cannon mount that I traded in when I jump over to Sony. I slap it on my Sony with the Sigma MC-11adapter and have never been happier.No, I would not recommend this Sony lens.

I use this on my Sony A7RII for landscape photography when needed. Gives me all the reach I need at 600mm and when I go to APS-C mode I then have 900mm. It's built like a tank. Feels like a pro lens. Sharpness on a 1-10 it's an 8. I wouldn't expect more but at the same time my images look sharp enough. No complaints. It's heavy and the image bounces around a lot in the viewfinder when hand holding because of its length and weight. Always use a minimum shutter speed that is the reciprocal of your focal length when hand holding. I.E. 600mm then use 1/600th of a second min. If birding I'd go with 1/1250th sec. I went back and forth deciding between the Sony G Master 100-400 and this lens. I bought both and tested them on my A7III. I ended up sticking with the 100-400, but really only because I ultimately valued the 100-200 focal length more than the 400-600 range and because the 100-400 is lighter and more compact (and fits better in my bag with my other gear).But man -- the 200-600 is a beautiful lens that delivers! I didn't see any drop-off in performance across the focal range, the action on it is excellent, and it has all the features one would need. It is a hair slower than the 100-400, but that's hardly an issue. The autofocus performance is stellar. If I walk long distances or I use my bicycle I put this unit on a cotton carrier which works well for me.I am 74 and have little difficulty walking around with this lens.If your thinking about this lens I strongly suggest you try both the 100-400 and 200-600 before you buy and see which is best suited for you.Again, I am strongly promoting this lens as an all in one wildlife lens.I also own the Sony 600 f4, and in my professional opinion at closer ranges I have trouble telling which lens I have used especially after a visit to photoshop.Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
I looked at the other zoom lenses in this range, but in the end I chose the Sony 200-600 mainly because of internal zooming. I also purchased an RRS Arca-Swiss compatible replacement foot. What can I say? This lens is the standard to which others are compared for a reason - great image quality! When you are shooting birds or wildlife at a distance, that's what really matters when you must crop. I already had the Sony 1.4x teleconverter - another reason to choose the Sony lens for the Sony system. With this lens and teleconverter I have excellent image quality up to 840mm - 1260mm equivalent if I use APS-C mode. That's a lot if versatility with excellent results. I definitely think the higher price is worth it considering those results.
