I got the chance to test out this lens versus the famous Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG DN on my a7rV. Shot side by side with the same scene, same settings, focused in same areas the GM II was consistently doing better than the sigma. It was especially noticeable when shooting wide open. The GM II was displaying better micro contrast, resolving better than the sigma in the center and corners. This was more noticable when shooting distant objects, focused at infinity which I often do for landscapes or at hyperfocal.Colors wise the sony render more on neutral side where the sigma is more on warmer side. Is the GM II 2x better than the sigma for the price? That's for you to decide. Copy variation plagues the 24-70 zoom lenses in particular as they are difficult to design and have different tolerances. I was not happy with my two previous copies as they were softer on the left side of the frame even stopped down at most FL which was not OK. I had the same experience when I got my sony 12-24 GM lens. I really wish this wasn't the same case in 2023 but here we are.Still highly recommend this lens if you can afford it and want the best AF especially.

This is my second time purchasing this lens, one was already gifted to someone. It's optically really nice, the size is large but not too big and it has very sharp and pleasant. It is comparable to primes at times, especially during the day and with filters. The 24-70 focal range is also versatile and with the APS-C crop on some cameras you can get to approximately 105mm for potential cityscapes or distant objects. Close focusing distance is good so you can take pictures of smaller things like rings, watches or flowers. The only down side comes at night time, as f2.8 is a little dark, but if you have a capable camera body then you can make it work too. GM glass is GM glass so you know it's going to be good. Haven't yet shot a lot with it yet (big trip coming up) but the few I have taken are excellent. (Full disclosure, I also paired it with the A7R4 to replace the A7R3 so there's that. 😊) Compared to my prior GM version: 1) It has an aperture ring (iris lock) to offer more control but you need to apply a bit of force to get it over the A setting for the camera to take over. I was afraid of forcing it until I saw others with the same question on YouTube 😊 2) It LACKS the lock button to keep the lens from extending under its own weight. I carry my camera in a hip holster with the lens hanging down and appreciated the GM version's lock to keep it from extending automatically. Unfortunately, I was disappointed, because I noticed a crazy amount of dust inside the lens after using it for only 3-6 months. None of my older Sony lenses, including the original 24-70 GM or even the older and much cheaper Sony 16-35 f/4 Zeiss had any dust inside. The new GM 2 is vacuuming the air like crazy. I shoot at apertures closer to f/8-f/9 (I shoot high-end interior design and architecture), and that dust can be noticeable in some of the photographs, which is unforgivable for a lens, which as Sony claims itself, updated dust and moisture resistant design provides extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging ... MoreI really enjoyed the lens for the first 3-6 months. Again, the 1st generation was on another level in that regard.

That said, my impression after four days is simple: magic. This lens is so versatile, the images so sharp, at all magnifications, even out to the edges, and colors jump off the page. I can't believe I'm generating these gorgeous images; it's just magic.I happened to be in a position when I could splurge and treat myself to such an expensive canera lens, and I am totally pleased. I know I will learn a lot more on how best to use this lens, and will grow with this lens and camera, but the results so far have exceeded my expectations. I think this lens is absolutely one of the greatest lenses I have ever used. It's definitely one of the most versatile in the business, and the quality of images that I can capture on my A7iv is incredible.That being said, this thing cost as much as an A7iv! I think it all depends on the budget. If money is not an issue with your next lens, then I would recommend this one. It has a ton of on-lens features (aperture wheel, custom buttons, etc.) that make it stand apart from other cheaper options.On the flip side, I rarely find that people don't want to save money. To be quite frank, I think there are a ton of options that are just as similar as this one for much cheaper. I think it all depends on the budget. If money is not an issue with your next lens, then I would recommend this one. It has a ton of on-lens features (aperture wheel, custom buttons, etc.) that make it stand apart from other cheaper options.On the flip side, I rarely find that people don't want to save money. To be quite frank, I think there are a ton of options that are just as similar as this one for much cheaper. Sure, you going to miss some fancy options and maybe even be looking at a third party company but saving close to a thousand dollars and still having a 24-70 f 2.8 lens is well worth it in my opinion.All in all, it always depends on the photographer. I purchased this lens new from B&H nearly two years ago ... it is my primary travel lens (A7RIII and A7RV bodies) and has been used in all sorts of weather extremes without issue. I dust off/wipe down my gear after each use and allow air dry if exposed to moisture ... I am pleased with how it's held up; despite its use still looks pristine and has no dust inside.There are lots of performance technical write-ups on the net; I've used this lens to create everything from landscapes to portraiture ... the results are stunning.A key trade off to the focal length versatility and constant f2.8 is its size and weight.
