The gear that is lighter is the gear that gets carried, and the gear carried is the gear used. And the BEST camera is the one you have with you.As a longtime user of the 70-200 f2.8, this new f4 has completely replaced that lens for me. This lens gives up one stop of light, but gains an advantage in size, weight, and flexibility since it can shoot almost true macro. The close-focusing is incredibly fun to use, it's like having 2 lenses in one.I recently made a weeklong trip to Montana, and took nothing but this lens and a 24mm 1.4, and this lens LIVED on my camera. It fit in my bag easily, was tucked under a jacket during rainstorms, and was so light you could easily carry it without fatigue. Most of my landscapes are shot at f8 anyways, so I was not restricted by the slower aperture. Being able to handhold at lower shutter speeds was also possible since it's SO light. This has been THE best telephoto lens I've ever travelled with. With a couple medical issues in my hands, and additionally being a parent, I'm not always able to comfortably carry around a large setup, and this lens feels wonderfully weighted on my cameras (a7rv and a7rii) and was comfortably carried for days without issue.I absolutely love this lens, and it has effectively replaced my 70-200 f2.8. If I really need more light, then I use a prime like the 135 f1.8, which you can afford since this is so much cheaper than the 2.8.5/5 stars, absolutely brilliant lens. If you've ever wanted to have your telephoto, but not want to lug it around, this is the lens for you.

Iβm not a pro but a photographer on a budget. At first 1699 seems a lot of money but compared to others native lens on this category this is a steal. If you want the best on this range then the f2.8 is $ 2800 but just one stop difference which isnβt a huge deal breaker because we have a good AI denoise solution that can correct this issue.Lets talk about plus points its light ,small , sharp and takes tele converter with also being a macro lens.I took this lens to hiking and it was like carrying 2 lens in one. It was excellent for landscape with F4 being no issue while taking macro flower at same time. I already sold my heavy f2.8 variant coz that lens is good only for indoor concerts and sports but again AI denoise is so good now that I donβt really need aperture ...Β MoreIβm not a pro but a photographer on a budget. I've used this lens for a birthday party at an indoor trampoline park on my A6600, and just this morning to capture a spider in my yard on my A7R IV. In both cases, it performed well. The trampoline park was very dark inside so I was shooting at ISO 6400 to get a fast enough shutter speed to capture the action. Focusing was excellent and the images are sharp and clear.I bought this lens instead of the f2.8 version primarily because of it's macro capability. It did not disappoint. Both of the attached images are 100% crops. The spider was ~ 9mm. The smaller spider was just the lens at 200mm focused as closely as possible. The larger spider was with the Sony 1.4x. Both show excellent sharpness.Overall, I'm very pleased with the lens.

Recently bought this lens, having just moved from Fujifilm and the build quality is fantastic. The image quality is excellent and love all the functionality that can be used direct on the lens.Tested it for a few macro shots and was super happy with the images, sharp and great contrast. Really enjoyed using the lens and using it with the foot bracket allows you to have a better grip for handheld images.I bought the 1.4 teleconverter to pair with this and it is a great combination. It's the most I've spent on a lens however it gives me what I want, excellent quality and images.
Compared to the previous 70-200 f4, this lens is sharper, lighter and faster focusing.More importantly the macro design of this lens reduces min focus distances, enabling close up shoots, that the old lens could not. When used with the 1.4 x and 2 x tele-converters image quality does not decrease to any degree I can notice in post.Making this lens with the 2.0 x tele suitable for short range bird in flight photography. The biggest benefit of this lens is having a short min focus distance macro lens that works with the Focus Bracketing function of the A7R V. As a nature photographer I was disappointed that none of the A mount macro lens would work with the focus bracketing function when attached to my A7R V with the LAEA 5 adapter. This lens solves that issue and makes it redundant to carry 50 mm and 90 mm FE macro lens. And the Tamron 180 mm macro, Minolta 200 mm macro A mount lens I have previously used with the LAEA 5 for single shot macro. Overall a big improvement on the previous version of this lens, but more importantly adding macro at focal lengths not previously available in E mount. Plus the ability to macro Focus Bracket with the A7R V.
I must admit, this is the most expensive lens I have ever purchased. Probably cheap for some photographers, but for a hobbyist, itβs a pricey investment. I will say though it has been well worth it. Itβs now my favorite lens and stays on my camera most of the time. Itβs lightweight, takes sharp photos, works well with the Sony 1.4X teleconverter for added reach, and actually takes very good macro photos. I wasnβt sure if the F4 would be bright enough, but itβs proven to be fine for outdoor photography. I highly recommend this one.
How many 70-200mm zoom lenses can accept a 1.4 or 2.0 teleconverter and do it well? How many 70-200mm zoom lenses can shoot half-macro throughout the whole zoom range and 3/4 macro with the 1.4 teleconverter and 1:1 macro with the 2.0 teleconverter? Maybe, but if you know the walk is long and you have plenty of light I would definitely considering carrying it and the 2.0 teleconverter.I bought this lens for the wife, she uses an A7Riv. I 'played' with this lens on a Sony A7C, an A7iv and the A1. I can only give it 5 stars but would give it 6 if possible. Now image quality. With the 2.0 on and shooting in crop mode it does not present as well as the 100-400 or 200-600. Of course there is no comparison with the 600/4 but your back, knees and wallet will love it IF you have the light for F8. The fact that this Sony lens can take either TC well tells you up front the lens alone is sharp sharp sharp.Images attached to give an idea of what can be done. For those scheming a travel system imagine having the Sony 20-70F4, the 70-200 II, and the 200-600mm. Pack a 1.4 or a 2.0 and you even have macro covered.Kinda hate to hand it over to the wife, she's already claimed my 200-600 haha!
The Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II is truly a marvel of engineering. As soon as I heard that Sony was releasing this second iteration of the 70-200mm focal length, I immediately put my name on the waiting list with B&H to purchase. I was not disappointed.First of all, I am amazed at how small and lightweight this lens is yet beautifully designed and constructed. It feels and performs like a GM series even though it is a G series. It is razor sharp throughout the entire zoom range. The autofocus is instantaneous due to its four linear motors. There is very little to no chromatic aberration.Although some people may dislike that it does not have an internal zoom, it has a short throw and provides a small footprint in my camera bag. There is very little to no chromatic aberration.Although some people may dislike that it does not have an internal zoom, it has a short throw and provides a small footprint in my camera bag. The benefits of having such a compact lens outweigh the internal zoom. By the way, I love that Sony has included a lock switch on the lens which does not allow the barrel to extend. Great job Sony!It comes with a tripod foot that is easily removable. My only gripe is that the foot is not arca Swiss compatible just like the 200mm-600mm. In my case, I have an arca Swiss L-bracket attached to my camera body thus not having to use the tripod foot.Great lens for travel and hiking. I have the 200-600mm which I love however, it is heavy and I will definitely be taking the 70-200 with me instead whenever I shoot landscape or go hiking or birding especially that this lens will utilize the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters with no degradation in image quality. Not to mention, the macro capabilities of this lens are truly amazing at 0.5x and it can achieve a 1:1 macro capability with the 2.0x teleconverter. Having the 2.0x teleconverter attached extends the focal range of this lens to 140mm-400mm.Having OSS and the ability to have on-demand manual focus on this lens is outstanding when shooting macro.Such a versatile lens, whether you're shooting portraits, landscape, wildlife, sports photography....it does it all extremely well. There may be certain folks that turn up their noses because this lens is a 4.0 instead of a 2.8. In this era of high performing cameras that handle low light extremely well, having a lens that is lighter and less costly yet performs as well as the 2.8 GM is a no brainer. The images coming out of this lens paired with my Sony A7IV are nothing short of spectacular. If you're a Sony shooter and in the market for a 70-200mm, I would give this lens serious consideration. With that said...I highly recommend that you buy your equipment from B&H. Their customer service is truly exceptional. I've always had a positive experience.Attached are some sample images.
I'm extremely happy with this lens. It's relatively light and compact, and works well for a variety of situations. I recently took it with me on safari and it took wonderful photos of the animals (they got so close that I often didn't need to use a larger lens), as well as the landscape. In macro mode, I've taken it to botanical gardens for close-up shots of flowers and bugs. No issues with the autofocus capturing quickly moving bugs. Finally, the light weight makes it an easy lens to use for long walks around the city.Obviously Sony was able to keep the cost down by having a maximum aperture of f/4, but as a hobbiest not looking to drop a mortgage payment on a single lens (at least not often), I can live with that tradeoff. This will definetly become one of my ...Β MoreI'm extremely happy with this lens. Really impressed with this lens. 3 custom buttons, which can only be assigned to 1 menu item, af/mf switch, dmf switch, focus limiter switch, OSS switch, OSS 3 setting switch, macro capability of .5 at all focal lengths. The only thing I wished the Sony had was an aperture ring, painted it black, and an arca groove on tripod foot. The Sony is actually about a half ounce lighter than the Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 that has none of these things plus a much wonkier macro capability. Of course the Tamron is f2.8 so that explains the weight difference. Other than f2.8 the Tamron has nothing on this lens relative to image quality and the Sony is in particular so much easier to use for macro. I have found the image quality on this lens to be superb, birds in flight at f8/f11, static subjects at f4 at any focal length, this is one heck of a lens from Sony and itβs lightweight and eminently hand holdable and packable. I know it costs a third more than the Tamron but when you consider what you are getting, including 20mm more reach, this lens is a no brainer over the Tamron. The reason Iβm comparing this to the Tamron is because I owned it before replacing it with this. And, donβt get me wrong, the Tamron is a very sharp lens that will do better in low light than the Sony but, overall, I am enjoying this Sony lens so much more than the Tamron. And, of course, if money is no object, get the new Sony GM 70-200mm f2.8 II. Sony is killing it with these βupdateβ lenses and, yeh, expensive but SO GOOD!! Highly recommended!
