Long story short, this lens is permanently attached to my camera. For my needs, no matter what I’m doing or where I’m going, I know the 35mm will do the job beautifully.Enough width for landscapes, perfect for street and travel, and low enough distortion for beautiful environmental portraits and product photography. The lens is close focusing and absolutely razor sharp. If you want to call it a negative, the barrel is plastic but it’s high quality and very resistant to wear and impacts, more so than painted metal.Sony have hit an absolute home run. This is an all-time great 35mm lens by anyone’s standards.

Lensrentals always makes the renting process (and then purchasing, if you want) smooth and easy. I love the fast shipping in the strong Pelican case with extra tape for the box and the pre-printed mailing label for quick drop-off for return. As for the Sony GM 35 1.4, what’s there to say that hasn’t already been noted by plenty of other photographers. The lens is very sharp starting at f1.4, and when you stop it down, you just get more and more of the frame in focus (from a depth of field perspective). The autofocus is very fast, and though it’s touted as a portrait lens for good reason, I had great results with it shooting sports at night on my Sony A9 (subjects were closer…not on the field, of course). I can’t recommend this lens any more highly, especially ... MoreLensrentals always makes the renting process (and then purchasing, if you want) smooth and easy. Absolutely fantastic prime lens from Sony. Sharp and great colors. Occasionally some minor focus breathing, but very easily fixable. Especially if you have breathing compensation. It is an excellent versatile lens for both video and photography, especially if you could only bring one lens. The focal length is a good sweet spot. The Bokeh is nice and clean. This is a winner and must have in your lineup for an excellent standard lens. You won't be disappointed.

This focal length worked out perfectly for group photos. Used it for graduation pics and came out to be a good investment. Being how crowded it was, I was able to get close to group and and fit everyone in picture compared to the 50 1.4gm i own also. I went through a lot of sony GM line. 20 g, 24gm, 35gm, 50gm 1.2, 50 gm 1.4, 85gm, 24-70gm, 70-200gm mk2 so that I can find a focal length that works for me. Everone is different, so you buy the one that fits you best. I sold all but the 70-200gm mk2 for kids sports, 50 1.4gm mostly for portraits and 35 1.4gm to be my default lens thats stays on camera since I have toddlers that I may end up shooting indoors or group pics or events. Absolutely flawless. Superb auto-focus speed. Supremely sharp even when shooting wide open which, let's face it, is critical or else why pay the premium for a 1.4 lens. Manual focus ring is buttery smooth with just enough stiffness to maintain precise control. Aperture Ring, which I had never used before this lens, has grown on me quite a bit and I now find myself using it exclusively--nice firm stops. Of course, you can bypass it entirely if that's your preference and simply set it to 'A' Automatic so that you adjust with the camera body controls. If I HAD to be critical about anything it would be that the lens has a little more heft to it than say, the 35mm 1.8 which is considerably lighter and sports a daintier footprint. That being said, this lens is certainly not heavy--I shoot primes almost exclusively and 35mm is my go-to focal length: I have no issues carrying this around all day long mounted to an A7IV. No fatigue and I should mention that I hand-hold as I hate straps of any kind. It's expensive, so your use-case (and tax bracket) will play an important role in your purchasing decision but if you love primes and you're fond of the 35mm focal length, this is a no brainer.
All the rave reviews for this lens are true. It truly is superb. The only drawback is its relatively high price. The question for me was is it worth the upgrade from the older Zeiss 35/1.4? It is smaller, lighter and sharper than the older lens which I also own. I think I got one of the later good copies of the Zeiss 35mm f1.4 (earlier copies seem to have been plagued with quality control issues). Certainly at 100% magnification on 50 mp and 62 mp sensors, the GM is noticeably sharper and higher in contrast wide open but the difference is not huge. In normal use I think the image quality from the older lens is more than sufficient. You can do a little sharpening in post processing if you want. I decided to go ahead and purchase the GM but if cost were a limiting factor, the Zeiss is a very nice lens (albeit larger and heavier) at a much better price point. You can get them used now for a bargain.
The optics, build, size and feel are all near perfect. However, as many have noted, the focus breathing when shooting video is egregious. Even if you have an A7IV or other newer Sony with FB compensation, the crop is quite significant (goes from 35mm to about 39mm and that’s without any stabilization crop). It’s a lot of money to spend if you’re not a professional charging money. IMO, the Sony FE 35mm 1.8 is an excellent alternative. I had both and ended up keeping the 1.8 because of its cost/size/quality. It also has virtually no focus breathing so you avoid that crop. It’s significantly smaller/lighter and about half the price but in no way is it half the quality. I’d say it’s at least 90-95% as good as the GM (I realize that’s subjective).
There are a lot of options for 35mm lenses and it really depends on what you are willing to spend, do you need lightweight, do you do both video and photo, do you need ultimate sharpness? I have used various third party lenses, I have used the Sony 35mm f1.8 lens (it is a nice lightweight option as well), and have settled on this one. I have used 35mm lenses on Sony A7III, A7C, A7Riii, A9, and currently using this on the A7IV. I shoot both photos and videos and I like a lightweight kit. I also own the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM and the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DGDN lenses, so I have a fast, quality set of sharp primes (usually take only 2 of them depending on what I think I will be shooting). For those shooting video with this lens, there is focus breathing you need to be aware of, so it can be dealt with if you have the A7IV with the focus breathing correction. If not, this could be a deal breaker for you.The lens is sharp, focuses fast, has good color, and is just a bit over a pound in weight, so a smallish lens that is good for walk around, street, portrait, and a nice if I could only take one prime with me type lens.
I just got this and have only been doing some quick testing with it, just to play around.things I noticed:* it's heavy, I'm not sure what the standard weight is for G master lenses since this is my first 'quality' lens. but it is heavier than my Sony 85 mm 1.8*The images are crisp. taking photos at 10k iso indoors with my a7riii, at 1.4-5.6 at 10k iso looks like how my 85mm lens looks at 5.6 - f/8 at 250-500 iso.*There is a rubber lining on the lens hood that I love so I don't have to worry about bumping the glass when putting it on, or anything I put the lens hood against.* never had an aperture ring on a digital camera lens, and not sure how I feel about it yet, Right now I think I like it more than dialing it on camera. (There is an auto setting so you don't need to use this feature if you don't like it)* The glass where the lens attaches to the camera, it's going to be easy to clean, IDK why, but on my Sony 85mm there is a weird gap around the edges that is super hard to get stuff out of* The front glass lays nicely with the frame of the lens, also making it easier to clean.* The gears seem smooth, as well as the rings for the aperture and manual focus* The autofocus seems fast but I need to test more with itI will give more updates in the future as I use it, this is just right out of the box with no real testing. overall I'm happy with it right now.
