I waited for the second gen of this lens and the wait was worth it. While it might not be a lens worth upgrading from the first generation if you had it, this lens is right in line with the benefits of many other second generation Sony lenses. Lighter, smaller, sharper (albeit minimal and doesn't matter in most cases). Paired with the A7cR it's a great pairing. Can punch it up with APS-c mode to 24-52mm or just crop in post. It is fairly nicely balanced and with the bigger grip size installed it's fairly easy to grip. The weight ends up balanced just behind the aperture ring on the lens. A bigger body that weighs more it'll be balanced nicely.Image quality is great. I had originally booked with BorrowLenses, but Lensrentals acquired them between the time I placed my order and the time of the rental starting. Lensrentals gave me a call from a real person, upgraded me to priority overnight shipping for free when I told them I was going to Nepal, and even corrected my originally incorrect lens order for free. The lens itself is incredible. Sharp edge to edge, great color representation, excellent flare characteristics. For giant Himalayan landscapes, I found myself really needing the 16mm focal range.10/10 would rent again, both this lens and from Lensrentals.

Really really great service you've got here

This was my first rental with lensrentals, and I have to say, I was really impressed. The product is so thoughtful. The shipment arrived on time without too much labelling, making it easier to relabel and send back. The lens was well protected and in great condition. The added (and cutely branded) packing tape was a nice touch. The pricing was fair. And even the website is easier to use than competitors - better filtering (full frame vs aps-c!) for example. A+! Will 100% use again.

So Sharp. Great Bokeh.
13 January 2024

I had the version 1 of this lens and loved it. That lens was SO sharp and quick to focus. I sold it to get the mark 2 version which is even better. Lighter, smaller, faster to focus, better bokeh, and insane sharpness. This is on my Sony A1 about 70% of the time. It's a must-have for any photographer who is shooting stills or video. I love my primes, but when I'm shooting an event or documentary photography and don't want to be bogged down switching lenses, this is a go-to piece of glass. There is zero focusing noise if you shoot video. No chromatic aberration. Flare is well controlled. Construction is solid. I love this lens.

Worth the wait.
27 March 2024

Owned a 16-35mm f4 Zeiss for almost 10 years. Was my main travel lens and it was excellent. Came close to buying the Gen 1 GM 16-35mm lens but found it too big, heavy and front balanced on my A7r and then my A7R3 body.Glad that I waited for this Gen 2 version of this 16-35mm f2.8 GM lens.Incredibly compact and feels light weight. It is only a few grams heavier than the f4 Sony Zeiss 16-35mm which I find incredible. Optical quality for a zoom everything that I was hoping for on a GM lens. Sharp from corner to corner, even from f2.8. Great colour and contrast. Quick and silent and accurate focusing. Only 1 criticism is that is seems to suffer with quite marked lens flare when the sun is bright in the frame.

[Rewarded Review] A MAJOR improvement
5 October 2023

Having rented the original version for a bit, it was quite weak and ghosty at 35mm, while 16-28mm was quite good; the focal length was still really good for what it was though, and I enjoyed using it. Thrilled was I to see a GMII model come out. This iteration of the 16-35 f/2.8 is in another league entirely. Consistent with Sony's other GMII offerings, this is insanely sharp and crisp, with quite nice bokeh and ridiculously fast and accurate subject tracking. Colors look amazing, and functionally, it has all the buttons and switches you could want, including an Iris (aperture ring) lock and clickable switch. The best part is that it's just a skosh larger than the 20-70 f/4 G, which is a fairly miniscule offering. I am ELATED with this lens thus far and am so glad ... MoreHaving rented the original version for a bit, it was quite weak and ghosty at 35mm, while 16-28mm was quite good; the focal length was still really good for what it was though, and I enjoyed using it. The only issue seen is slightly darker corners at times, but in camera corrections fix that just fine and honestly, a little vignetting can make a shot prettier. Zero gripes about build quality; the lens feels great and is attractive on the camera as well. This one's a win, Sony.

It's a rocking lens.- Check out the attached (edited)photos for the colors from A7Riv+SEL1635gm2- This lens shines(charm) when you want to capture close indoor spaces.- The low light performance is superb.- As this is a light weight lens, you can easily carry it around whole day while traveling and taking pictures in narrow spaces & alleys.General/Neutral Note:- As this is a wide angle lens, there will be a learning curve on composition of image. So I would highly recommend to get your hands dirty first, before any major photoshoot. If you have already used some other wide lens then you'll be fine but getting familiar with lens before hand won;t harm :-)- The focal range is interesting, I won't say it's the best range for regular travel photography but an interesting one. I'm more in favor of 24-70mm range as it covers majority of my photography style.- Note, that at wider angle it covers a lot more scene into the image but distortion will also be there. So do not forget to switch on the lens correction.Cons:- Very Expensive- Also I feel this won't be a lens that I want to carry alone, I think, one will always need to carry additional lens with this range so that you won;t miss or face FOMO some amazing shots.- It won't replace 24-70mm lens from your travel bag.- My main concern is the range of this lens and not the quality of product or image this produces.Overall:- I think this is a great lens which produces amazing photos.- Slight learning curve on composition is there at wide angles for newbies.- Definitely an expensive lens so be mindful of that.- Finally, in my opinion it's not a replacement for 24-70mm range. I find 24-70mm more versatile for Street and Travel Photography.Happy Photographing Guys!!Saurabh. \m/

[Rewarded Review] Changes the game
18 December 2023

This lens completely changed my camera, i had the standard kit lens when you buy the A7IV which is decent and gets the job done but this makes such a world of a difference lol. The sharpness of the image is unreal, the price sucks but you get what you pay for. I use this camera for a mix of things, I vlog with it for my social media page and just got back into photography with it. The aperture ring is so nice to have and it is lighter than the first edition which is great. The goal is to get the trinity: 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200. These lenses are built to last a very long time and will capture life greatest moments in the best of quality. For that I am willing to shell out the extra money. Buy once cry once

[Rewarded Review] Open Box listed as "Excellent", Wrong Lens Hood.
1 June 2024

So I bought an open box 16-35mm 2.8 GM II. It was listed as excellent condition. When I got it, I noticed that the lens hood was swapped out for a different one. The inside of the lens hood had white fuzz and that was what got me looking at it more. It included the one that normally goes on the 24-70mm 2.8 GM. I saved $200 buying used, but ended up having to spend $50 for a new hood. The lens itself was in great condition. I will do myself a favor and just spend the money on new next time.

[Rewarded Review] Works for Me
9 October 2023

As I have said in other reviews, I don't test equipment with charts or by photographing pennies. This lens arrived last week, and on Sunday, I had a demonstration to cover. Normally, I use 24-70 and 70-200 lens (both II generation GM), but I left the 16-35 at home because it was large. I decided to take the new lens. It is considerably smaller than the first generation version.Hope that helps. When I photograph demonstrations, I shoot from above, from below, and while walking backwards. In other words, I don't have architecturally/tripod pure images, which means distortion can be a problem. For the most part, I found the vast majority of the images to be excellent, particularly after I applied the lens profile in Photoshop. I did not find a profile in CaptureOne. I am sure it is coming. There were a couple of images where the person on the edge was standing in a weird position--not looking straight-ahead--so their heads and bodies got a bit distorted. The buildings in the background did show signs of distortion, but I don't blame the lens. It was my angle. For the people on the edges, the lens correction either fixed it, or in several cases, I simply cropped them out because they were not the main subject. When necessary, I made a perspective correction to fix the buildings. The images were sharp to my eye. I do not focus too much on bokeh, but when I did shoot close to wide open, I did notice on several images that the colors in the background were a little blotchy. That may be due to the lighting (overcast afternoon in the Fall), so I'll have to give this lens a second test on a sunny day.Culling through my images, I found that the majority of the images I deemed worthy of processing were the ones shot with the 16-35 lens.I've always stayed away from the 16-35 lens for demonstrations and other public events because shooting wide does create issues with people, but I am very much inclined to keep this lens in my permanent kit.
