I got this lens to take away on holiday where I didn't want to take my GM 100-400 or my G200-600. The idea was to have a lens that was as close as possible to an all-round lens. A lens for landscape, buildings, wild life if the opportunity came up and any thing else. Has it done this? Well the wild life side yes and the rest is yet to be put to the test.I like the ability to lock the lens at 70mm for transport and the feel of the lens is comfortable. What I would have liked is a tripod foot as the lens is a fair weight and I don't want to stress the body of the camera. I have solved this with an aftermarket tripod collar, which means its completely removable. That's it for now once back from the trip I may update this review giving an idea of how the lens ... MoreI got this lens to take away on holiday where I didn't want to take my GM 100-400 or my G200-600. I purchased this lens to pair with my a7RIII to take wildlife and youth sports photography. In both wildlife and youth photography, I'd like to shoot at f/10 or so. When doing so, the focus is so slow that I miss the shots that I want. When asking sony support about this issue, they came to the conclusion that I needed to shoot at f/8 or lower in order for the autofocus to be faster. This does not lend well to sports or moving wildlife photography, which is why I purchased this lens. Let me also say that this is in daylight. Otherwise, with still objects, the lens does well and the stabilization is great so you need not have a tripod. Considered the 70-200 F4 but couldn't justify the extra expense, bulk and weight when I don't really need the constant F4 aperture. Used it a few times and it's performed well, you get good sharpness up to 200mm, a little soft towards 300mm (and the one time I've shot distant city lights at blue hour) but overall I'm happy. Did well on my A7iii when I shot some baseball, was able to use a fast shutter speed and ISO 500-1000 dependent on light to freeze the action. Also wish it came with a tripod collar, it's a big heavy lens and very long when extended, hope it'll last on the A7iii mount.Won't carry it with me on every shoot but glad I have it.

Excellent zoom lens for full frame Sony camera
27 May 2016

This is an excellent long range zoom which I purchased with the goal of replacing my Sony FE 70-200 G OSS in order to obtain the longer reach. Build and appearance are exceptional like the 70-200, and the black finish is more preferable for me with my a7rii and a7ii bodies. The 70-300 is about the same weight as the 70-200, but shorter in length without the collar, making it more user-friendly for use without a tripod. I use a ReallyRight Stuff L-bracket on my a7rii for tripod use and this lens was very secure without a collar mount, which has been a reported a concern by owners of the smaller a6000 and a6300 formats. Before committing to the 70-300, I spent a day running side-by-side field tests with both lenses on and off a tripod and found the IQ to be very ... MoreThis is an excellent long range zoom which I purchased with the goal of replacing my Sony FE 70-200 G OSS in order to obtain the longer reach. Before committing to the 70-300, I spent a day running side-by-side field tests with both lenses on and off a tripod and found the IQ to be very similar, with the exception of macro zoom applications where the new lens, even at 300mm, was extremely sharp. When using the Peak Design shoulder rig off tripod and walking on wooded trails, I found the 70-300 with lens hood quite manageable mounted to my a7rii, compared to the longer 70-200 which seemed to push the limits of practicality. I only have gripe with this lens, and consequently deducted one star. The slower speed of the lens can be an issue, even outdoors, when shooting in early dawn, shady or twilight conditions, or with some ND and CPL filters. I found my Hoya Pro Digital CPL had an impact of about 4 stops on this lens and would have required a tripod in situations where I could have shot handheld with the 70-200 f/4. Yes, I knew this going in, but wish Sony would have provided at least the same constant f/4 performance with this excellent lens. In the end, I decided to sell my FE 70-200 f/4 OSS and keep this lens and very happy with my decision. Good luck with your decision!

Fits my needs perfectly (FS7)
22 February 2017

First of all I have to mention the incredibly short delivery time with B&H. I'm living in Europe and couldn't believe the lens is already here today. (By the way: long live the free trade) I was looking for a flexible addition to my Cine Prime Set which goes from 16 - 85mm (24 - 125mm on S35). For small and flexible setups I already have the SELP18105G for the shorter end, which serves me well and works good on the FS7. Its AF speed is ok but not the fastest. This is also the case with the SEL70300G. It surely depends on scene-appropriate focus settings in the cam and that I haven't explored in depth yet. But I'm curios to see if AF again works better with the A5100 than with the FS7. Manual focus mode is way better than with the SELP18105G, the SEL70300 feels much more precise and has a useful resolution. It's not useable with focus pulling gear but handling with focus ring is good. The SEL70300 is not a P and has no motor zoom. I don't need it since I use zooms as a 'Flexible Prime' at mostly fixed focal lengths. Before I used an old but fine Minolta MD 80-200 Zoom (with adapter) which had once Prime status. Only drawback was the bad resolution/sharpness at the long end.As I heard the SEL70300G is supposedly a successor to the Minolta and that leads my to my final verdict. The image quality is simply outstanding. Even at the longest end there is enough sharpness and the colors are beautiful. DOF is awesome on the FS7 and Bokeh is better than I have read. I'm happy, no, very happy with that lens. It fits my needs perfectly. The picture shows my cat (at least once she can make herself useful). Shot in Custom (Video) Mode and completely unedited.

Good But Not Great
1 August 2016

I bought the Sony A7Rii last year, moving from Canon. Since Sony did not have a 70-300 at the time (and I wanted more reach than the 70-200 that Sony did offer) I kept my Canon 70-300 L IS USM lens which I used on the A7Rii with a Metabones adapter. I've never had any issues using the Canon lens on the Sony body, but it was heavy and bulky with the adapter. So when Sony came out with the FE 70-300, I decided to give it a try. My first criticism of this lens is the lack of a tripod collar. I knew going in that it did not have one, but this lens is heavy and does extend several inches when zoomed. Although not a deal breaker, a tripod collar would be an added plus. Also, auto focus on the lens was somewhat hit or miss (although so is the Canon with the Metabones ... MoreI bought the Sony A7Rii last year, moving from Canon. Although not a deal breaker, a tripod collar would be an added plus. Also, auto focus on the lens was somewhat hit or miss (although so is the Canon with the Metabones adapter). The real issue for me was image quality. The FE 70-300 was excellent at the short end (70-150mm) and a good match to the Canon in that focal range, but between 150-250mm it started to get pretty soft in comparison. By 300mm the Sony was very close to, but not quite as sharp as, the Canon. The bottom line is that from 150-300 the Canon is visibly sharper. In all fairness to Sony, this is in every respect a very good lens and if I did not have the Canon to compare it to, I would not have been dissatisfied with it. But in the end I wasn't willing to sacrifice image quality to save a few ounces in the camera bag. I ended up returning the Sony to B&H and will wait until something better comes along. That said, for someone who does not already have a better adapted lens, I would recommend this lens if you need something in that zoom range. The lens is moderately priced and the IQ is more than acceptable.

Great Lens
7 March 2023

I purchased my Sony a7 iv with a 24 -> 70 mm, which is the bread and butter, but was lacking a lens that would grab those images a bit further away. I toyed up the Sony 70 -> 200 and the 70 -> 300. I opted for the 70-300 for the extra reach, which is not vast, but it gives me that extra for a wide variety of applications.I am very pleased with the G Lens, at a price I could justify. I am very happy with it. I have used it for a variety of Astro, Landscape and Nature and cannot fault it.If you want the extra reach, I would recommend it. Size and weight wise, very similar to the 24-70 G.

Optically very good but autofocus is inconsistent
9 July 2016

I must admit I was excited when the news of this lens first appeared. After reading several positive reviews I decided to purchase the lens. The good news is that optically it is a real good performer, however, there are several negatives which caused me to rate it only 3 stars. The biggest is the oftentimes slow and inconsistent autofocus.. Sometimes the lens hunts for several seconds, even in good light which I find unacceptable and disappointing for a lens of this high cost. Other times, the lens locks in to the subject right away. I've tried many of the different autofocus settings with the same result. I am also using this lens with the A6300 which is supposed to have the fastest autofocus in the Sony E-mount line. However, this lens/camera combo doesn't come close to my Canon 5D3 with the white Canon 70-300mm L IS lens for responsiveness. I hope a firmware update will help solve the autofocus issues. The Sony/Zeiss 16-70 doesn't seem to have this problem. AF does speed up a bit when you select the limited range (3M to infinity). I also find the lens a bit top heavy for the A6300, and the lack of a tripod collar seems like an oversight for such a heavy lens. I should also note that I have no immediate plans to upgrade to the A7 FF line. One key advantage most APS-C mirrorless camera systems have over DSLR's is light weight. You lose some of this advantage when you go full-frame. The A6000 (which I also own) and the A6300 are great small cameras systems and I hope Sony will continue to develop more compact and high-quality APS-C lenses.

Sometimes capable and sometimes flawed
28 September 2018

I purchased this for use on an A6000 as a "poor man's wildlife" lens (with the plan to go full frame body in the future). It is capable of producing some nice images of stationary birds IF you have excellent lighting and can get relatively close. In lower light or at a distance the images quickly fall apart (A6000's high ISO handling is not great and AF tracking is underwhelming). For telephoto landscapes - I tested this a number of different times with different landscapes, different distances, OSS on/off, etc and here is what I found (this is on a crop sensor of course): Wide open from 70-200 the images are very sharp in the center with some noticeable softening toward the edges. It seems to miss the focus somewhat regularly at certain focal lengths (200mm seems the worst). However, if I manually focus I can get well focused, sharp images at these focal lengths. Another review mentioned AF accuracy problems with an A6000 so that might be the core of the issue.I would not recommend this lens on an A6000. However, it really wasn't intended for this purpose and may be perfectly decent on other E mount platforms.

Very Good Telephoto Zoom, but My Copy Was Poorly Finished
22 May 2016

My primary reasons for buying the Sony FE 70-300mm G OSS was to get a longer reach and greater maximum magnification (0.31x vs 0.13x) than my FE 70-200 F/4 G OSS. I plan to use it on my Sony A7ii and A7Rii to photograph larger insects, like butterflies and dragonflies close-up, as well as certain types of wildlife and flowers. I would have given this lens five stars were it not for the fact that, right out of the box, the lens barrel had a highly noticeable, 0.25 dia. shallow dimple or dent? on the top of the lens barrel between the focus and zoom rings and just left of center. I'm pretty sure the barrel is polycarbonate or similar plastic, so this may well be a molding flaw. After thinking it over and talking to a B&H customer service rep, I decided to keep the lens because optically, it appeared to be as good as you can get for a general purpose zoom of this type no decentering that I cold discern and pretty decent all around sharpness, even in the corners at 300mm; on a par with or even better than my Sony FE 70-200 f/4 G OSS. Also, Sony has noticeably higher lens to lens variation among copies as documented by LensRentals dot com and I was afraid that a replacement copy might look nice, but be a worse performer optically. Thanks to B&H for giving me a $## electronic gift card as compensation. As I said, the Sony FE 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 G OSS appears to be a decent performer optically and I am very pleased with the image quality. After taking about 100 test shots with the lens, in my opinion it may be sharper all around than the Sony 70-200 f/4 G OSS and to my eyes, the 70-300 is sharper in the corners at all focal lengths. Color rendition is nice and rich. The bokeh is O.K. Nothing to write come about, but it's fairly smooth and not complicated or jagged. Vignetting is noticeable at all focal lengths, but is not severe and should be easily correctable in Adobe apps when a lens profile becomes available. I've seen reviews that claim that chromatic aberration is not noticeable, but from my experience, it's definitely an issue and can be severe under the right circumstances. Notice the blue fringe halo around the staves of the backlit ocotillo fence in the background of the attached image. Again, I'm hoping that this will be more easily correctable with a future lens profile. Distortion appears to be very well controlled and, using the old brick wall shots, appears to be mostly pincushion distortion at all focal lengths. It's not complicated or severe and can be ignored in most cases. Again, I'm hoping that these issues will be more easily correctable with a near-future lens profile. The OSS works well in conjunction with the A7ii and A7Rii IBIS and I was able to take sharp pictures, hand held at f11 and 1/60 s in full daylight. Autofocusing is mostly fast and efficient, but it does hunt a lot in low light situations. Speaking of which, this is not a lens that's going to serve low light and/or sports and/or photographers of active wildlife, like birds in flight, very well. The lens does not support a lens collar, but the lens is not all that heavy about 854 gm, similar to my FE 70-200 f/4 G, and I hardly ever use its lens collar. Others may consider this a deal breaker. I don't do video, only stills, so I can't address its video performance. I have to say, this is a really ugly lens. Aesthetics is not one of its strong points. But aside from the aforementioned cosmetic dimpleon my copy, the build quality is very good and appears to be sturdy without a lot of weight, a must for me with my bad neck and shoulder issues. It also comes with the usual lens caps and a Sony leatherette lens pouch and lens hood. Finally, I have to say, that if the FE 70-300mm had been available 4 months ago, I probably wouldn't have bought the FE 70-200mm F/4 G. The former is definitely more versatile and, my copy at least, is optically just as good as the FE 70-200 f/4. If you don't need a lens collar and the larger constant aperture, and want a better maximum magnification ratio at a minimum focusing distance of 0.9 m. The FE 70-300 may be a good deal for you.

Spanning a useful range of telephoto focal lengths, the FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS from Sony is a versatile zoom lens designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. Complementing the reach, this lens' optical design incorporates four aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion glass elements to control spherical and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for increased clarity, sharpness, and colour accuracy. A Nano AR coating has also been applied to individual lens elements to minimise lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and colour fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. Well-suited to a variety of telephoto needs, this zoom lens balances both a versatile focal length range along with a sophisticated optical design for maintained image quality. This lens is in excellent condition with only the lightest signs of use. The optics are clean and clear with no marks or scratches. There is an extremely minor amount of dust within the lens. The lens barrel shows only the lightest cosmetic marks. The focus ring is smooth and in great condition. The lens mount is in good condition.
