This set-up is very impressive. I have owned Sony soundbars before this, and this system is clearly in a league of its own among soundbars. The speakers are so clean and clear, in those aspects they match my stereo Sony speakers which are much bigger. Obviously my stereo speakers have a much fuller and deeper sound along with much more powerful bass. I have used this system watching a movie, watching sports and listening to youtube concert and song clips. It shines the best with movies but does dam good with the music clips. With sports you hear background sounds one does not hear with just the TV speakers, but sports are not as impressive as movies or music. I played CDs with this system thru my blueray player and the sound was incredible. Unlike my stereo system which is more horizontal in sound, you can tell the HT-A9 bounces the sound of the ceiling that the stereo system can not match. I have to confess that I bought the sub-woofer with the system, in my opinion it is a necessity especially for music and movies. The set-up is flawless, no drop off of sound at all so far, but all of my speakers have a clear sightline with the control box. Easy to set up, love having no wires from control box to speakers. The sub woofer does not need line of sight to control box. As yet I am undecided whether I like the system used with the TV center speaker more than the set-up on its own. I have The Sony A80K 65 in. as my TV with the set-up. All in all, I love this system and have no regrets buying it even if it is expensive. I did buy the system and sub woofer on sale, saving 400 in all. The gray color does not look bad at all. Best overall TV system I have ever owned, I will always buy a Sony TV and have owned Sonys all my life and I am 71.

It’s as if you are wearing a headset. The phantom center does a great job at simulating the center channel but this would be the only negative. Ive paired this with my A80J as the center channel which is certainly helps with center dialogue. This will be personal preference based on how it sounds.Between the sw3 and sw5 sub, the latter provides deeper bass and wider range to suit your needs. SW3 at level 10-12 is equivalent to a 3-4 on the SW5. If you live in a small apartment, recommend the SW3, other wise go for the Sw5.

I’ve compared this to many soudbars(Sonos Arc + Sub & Ones, Sennheiser Ambeo, Q990B, Bose 900 w/ sub and surrounds). None of them come close to this with the level of immersion however the Ambeo is a beast and does a fair job for being a soudbar. If the speakers arent too far apart the phantom center does an excellent job, i have them about 8 ft from each other. The atmos is so good and very close to a proper atmos setup. The roar in jurrasic park will send chills down your spine. The moment batman starts up his batmobile in new batman movie will put a smile on your face. ... MoreLet me start off by saying that i have a traditional 5.1.4 setup in my bedroom and this thing is impressive! HOWEVER, if you buy this system make sure you get the SW5 sub, if you fail to do so you will not have the same experience. With that being said, I highly recommend this for movies 100%.

I have hesitated over this purchase as I had hoped to see it instore for a demo but have struggled to find this anywhere even on display. However, after reading all the reviews & spec I decided to change my existing Sony sound system for this & the added sa-sw5 subwoofer. I am delighted with the product & sound generated. It was well worth adding the sa-sw5 & my music listening is so enhanced, the availability of tracks for playing on the 360 Spatial audio format is good, the control buttons are easy to identify & allow me to increase rear speaker & bass level which I have found great for our living space. The pairing to my Sony TV was so easy & I am not a technical expert so go ahead if you are thinking of buying this system.I agree that cable length for speakers could be improved, or Sony could offer them as an extra over option to buy at same time. The colour of the speakers is ok but again a small negative would be options on colour would have suited my exiting decor.Could Sony not offer a discount if we traded in our old equipment? Sorry if this is already an option I have never come across it with Sony but have used it for other electronic suppliers. The technical support from Sony prior to making the purchase was superb so well done, they are a credit to your company.

It's devastatingly loud and clear with the sub and volume up (I only have the smaller SW3) but at normal volumes it sounds a little muffled and confused as to where the sound is placing itself. Some shows where the camera changes quickly and the direction of speech change confuse it, which sounds like speakers dropping out but they're not.I'm torn as I really don't want a soundbar in front of my TV, but this system is far from perfect and a lack of acknowledgement in reviews for it's downsides is bad, especially at the very high price point.I can't recommend it to anyone due to that price tag and the issues.

Simply The Best (Forget The Rest.)

I bought this just before Christmas and Sony dispatched it to me very quickly and even registered it for me. It was the epitome of simplicity to set up and is the absolute apogee of Home Cinema Sound Systems, it does it all from one neat box. Sony have torn up the rule book, gone back to the drawing board and come up with this supreme offering. I always strive to afford myself the very best, when it comes to technology, I'm a big home entertainment aficionado too, when I read the reviews of this my interest was piqued by the universal and unique excellence that was agreed upon by all its reviewers. I always strive to afford myself the very best, when it comes to technology, I'm a big home entertainment aficionado too, when I read the reviews of this my interest was piqued by the universal and unique excellence that was agreed upon by all its reviewers. To start with Sony have removed the biggest weak link in any cinema sound system, speaker cables. The speakers contain two microphones in each, when they set up they exchange sound to ascertain their relative positions and 'Map' a soundstage, they really are not too fussy about where you put them either, we all know rooms are irregular shapes, Sony have clearly borne this in mind when crafting this, hearing this is believing it. Much of it's capabilities are not yet used mainstream so it is future proof. I tried not to buy this, it is expensive, I'm so glad I did, you will be too. Sony are making giant strides on all fronts at the moment, they are far ahead of the curve, the AT-H9 will be the gold standard home cinema system for the rest of the decade. The only downside from my viewpoint is that I'll have to wait until next Christmas to buy the matching Sony Bravia TV. Nothing on the market resembles this, it has singularity of form and function, if you can get it, treat yourself, you're a long time dead.

I debated over this system for quite while as the initial cost of it was quite substantial. I ended up with it plus the SW5 subwoofer, costing an eye-watering 3k for everything. I am not disappointed in my choice, and I am continually impressed by the flexibility and performance of the system. Listening to pretty much any genre or media source, I really enjoy the timbre of the system, and combined with my Sony A80J as the center channel, it gives great surround coverage, although atmos content doesn’t have the height I was hoping. Those looking for an audiophile grade system, take heed that this is not that, and has the characteristic “Sony Smile” with regards to EQ.The only complaint that subtracted a star from the review is the wifi reliability. I have a cramped area in which to put the HT-A9 box in, being very close to my internet router (which the manual states will cause interference), so take from that what you will. However I usually have to re-sync the speakers at least once if not more when watching a movie or listening to music to eliminate speaker dropouts. The dropouts in my case are “blips” and only last maybe half a second, but it makes the media basically unwatchable without irritation.Overall, I am satisfied with this unit, and I think it offers exceptional flexibility and sound quality at a price that would be fairly limiting for a full-blown 7.1 system or the like. If you’re on the fence, I encourage you to try it out.

Spacious audio experience

Have you ever put on a pair of gaming headphones with 7.1 surround sound (like HyperX) and turned on the spatial sound? That's what the HT-A9 sounds like to me. It sounds as if a lot of reverb is being applied making everything sound large and spacious. This is a good and a bad thing. Good in that it makes everything sound large and spacious, but bad in that it sacrifices audio quality to accomplish that.I used these with the SW5 sub so my review is based on this full setup. I kept the sub volume at 8 and rear volume at 8. Auto Sound mode with Immersive Audio Enhancement on. I have experienced no connection drops. When watching music videos, these things sound amazing. I kept the sub volume at 8 and rear volume at 8. Auto Sound mode with Immersive Audio Enhancement on. I have experienced no connection drops. When watching music videos, these things sound amazing. Clarity is top notch and the sub can bump hard. It upscales 2-channel sound in a similar way that an AV receiver would by providing ambient sound from the rears and up-firing speakers. However, when I listened to 360 audio from tidal, it was terrible. I may have listened to some poorly mixed tracks, but the quality truly suffers when it's up-mixed with these speakers. Music from Spotify was also a bit underwhelming compared to some other sound bars, but enjoyable enough. For movies, this thing sounds great. The "bubble" is truly there. What you feel is there is sound everywhere around you. That sound though, may not always be pleasant or high quality, but its presence is there. This is where the immersion comes in. I don't have a Sony TV, but the ghost center channel does a great job. Voices are clear and I don't feel the need to turn on subtitles to enjoy movies. For video games, this thing is not so great. Games sound spacious, but sound effects can sound very shrill and unpleasant. I tested this with Elden Ring and I can't count the number of times I flinched from loud shrill sound effects when I was playing in 5.1, 7.1, or Dolby Atmos for home theater (both on PS5 and PC). If you set the sound output to 2.1 the sharpness/shrill sounds smooth out, but the spatial audio diminishes. This is a trade-off. I may experiment more with this, but these are my current finding after a month of use. After comparing this to Sonos Arc (full setup), Sony HT-A7000 (full setup), and Samsung Q990B (full setup), I've decided to keep these for my game room. The main reason is that they make the room feel bigger than it is. And although the quality of the sound quality isn't as high as something like the Q990B, hearing sound all around you is actually quite amazing. I didn't understand how good these were until I compared them directly to a few different TOTL sound bars. I realize now that these sit between sound bars and speakers. They provide a far grander more spacious listening experience than any sound bar can, but they lack the quality of home theater speakers. However, they cost significantly less than setting up a home theater system with a receiver, and I love the simplicity of setup and use.The only thing I would want to make these even better is the ability to reduce/increase the spatial audio as needed based on what I'm watching. I think that would make these perfect.

Wow! The Perfect Audio System
25 May 2022

Wow! The perfect audio system. I have it connected to a Sony 85 inch Z8h 8K with center sync from the tv. Best Buy In Home Consultation suggested a Sonos bar with speakers in the ceiling for $4000-$5000. Ht-A9 with sw5 sub cost half of that at $2500. With the benefit of no ugly soundbar and if I move the system stays with me instead of paying to have electrical wires and ceiling speakers for the new owners. The other option was the Bose or Sonos soundbar and sub for $1500 but they lack hi-res auido for music and won't be as immersive of an experience. No complaints with value 5/5 rating.Set up is easy. Room calibration takes 30 seconds with Sony's sound mapping technology. Whereas Sonos makes people walk around the room as if its the early 2000s looking for a cell ... MoreWow! Room calibration takes 30 seconds with Sony's sound mapping technology. Whereas Sonos makes people walk around the room as if its the early 2000s looking for a cell phone signal. The Bose calibration is probably just as complicated. Only out of box adjustment I made was turning up the rear speaker volume to max using the remote control. One negative is the connection box has 1 HDMI in, which isn't a problem for me because PS5 is connected and I stream for tv and movies but it won't work for people with multiple devices such as PS5 and a cable box. Theoretically Sony can make a connection box with 2 or 3 HDMI in for the Mach 2 version of the product and it can be swapped out. No complaints with ease of use 5/5 rating.Quality is similar to watching tv where it depends on which source is used. 4K movies in 7.1 atmos are going to look and sound much better than HD tv in stereo for 3d immersion. Similar to hi-res and 360 audio compared to mp3.Movies in 7.1 atmos are incredibly immersive. My favorite scene is in James Bond No Time to Die where the car is spinning around in a circle while firing bullets and hearing them all around the room. It makes boring scenes, such as Jungle Cruise where the Rock and Emily Blunt are talking on a boat, more enjoyable because of the positional audio from the fish swimming and birds flying during their conversation.Video Games are more cinematic. I love hearing the sound of a blade being unsheathed going from left to right as a battle begins in Final Fantasy Stranger of Paradise as well as the sub replicating the punches from the pugilist job class.Music is as if you're in a personal concert. My favorite scene is from Peacemaker when John Cena is playing a piano version of Motley Crue Home Sweet Home and the front speakers with center sync from the tv give the impression of the sound stage being right in front of you. The Faster Pussycat House of Pain scene was so emotional and moving.TV/Sports is not as immersive but left and right are done really well. My favorite is the banter during soccer. Experiencing before kickoff fear and apprehension from the Manchester City fans singing Blue Moon knowing they had everything to lose while from my right Villa fans belting out Holte Enders in the Sky. 75 minutes of pure bliss hearing: Every week we support the mighty claret and blue. Conquerors of Europe 1982. Mcginn wins the ball in midfield and the chant: We got Mcginn, Super John Mcginn! Cash opens the scoring and Villa fans sing his affectionate nickname: Polish Cafu. Then dreamland as Coutinho doubles the lead and is serenaded off the pitch. I don't remember much after that except everything happening in a slow motion nightmare. The loudest roar I'll ever hear happened when the 3rd goal hit the back of the net while feeling absolutely devastated.TV/General watching is going to have sound coming from left and right. The best part is not having the volume get really loud when a commercial comes on instead the rear speakers project surround sound, which gets my attention and makes the advertisement more interesting. My favorite is watching a sitcom and hearing the studio audience laughing behind me.No complaints with quality except if tv stations could upgrade to 4k picture and surround sound. 5/5 rating.I highly recommend the Ht-A9 with sw5 sub for people who are against the aesthetic of a soundbar and want the mot immersive audio experience, except if they are using multiple devices because there is one HDMI in connection.
