Awful lens

Sony usually is pretty dependable for quality, but this doesn't deserve the Sony name at all. Yes, it's tiny and it does autofocus and might be alright for video, but it's pretty terrible for photos. It's as soft as a newborn kitten. I'd recommend Sony redesign this lens and seek to replace these ones with a trade-in policy. For photos this is unacceptable in quality (and I am not that demanding on my resolution). I've never been so disappointed with a lens.I'd recommend something else. Sigma's 19mm comes to mind. Good luck.

About half as long as the standard 16-50 mm kit lens and only about 1 f-stop faster, there isn't much good about this lens considering its poor performance, which is why it was discontinued. To make your camera "pocketable", I recommend the current 20 mm version which is the same size as the 16 but is a considerable improvement over the kit lens. Every review I could find says the same thing. And you can add the .75X wide adapter to get a 15 mm view with about the same overall size as the kit lens but 1 stop faster and vastly improved quality.

I use this lens to take landscape photos on my Sony A6000. The lens does indeed take wide shots and I would say it's pretty crisp. I'm not an expert on photography so I can give a simpleton review. However I would definitely not use this for simple street photography because the lens will make objects seem small. Unless you're trying to achieve that look then go ahead. Though I feel as if the Ultra Wide Angle Converter is almost necessary to obtain an even cleaner, sharper photo look. Also if you want to take selfies, this is the lens for you!Using this lens on the A6000 does make the camera look like a point and shoot therefore giving a compact look! The quality is pretty good and I expect it to last until I will get my next camera.

Good value robust wide angle E-mount lens.
4 March 2020

Cheaper and shorter than the other kit zoom lens for Sony. Good but not nearly as sharp (at the corners) as I expected compared (subjectively and unscientifically) with, for example Olympus 17mm 2.8 (u4/3 mount) given the 24Mpixel camere it fits on (a6000 etc). It's wide angle is the most useful feature for general photography, especially indoors. Built of metal, good robust design since it survived all the cuts and scratches on its outer aluminum rim by a previous owner (I bought it used for 110C$) .

If you can ignore distortion and vignetting around edges, you will love it
14 December 2013

The bokeh is excellent on macro. Less so when taking portraits or from further back, but still good. Excellent for landscapes, nature, city scene, and outdoor pictures. Indoor pictures are mediocre compared to the SEL1855. You may need to crop the pics due to lack of zoom and the wide angle. The wide angle is great to have but the distortion and vignetting around the edges is clearly visible to the naked eye (I was aware of this before buying, but being an amateur I didn't think I would notice...but I did! And you will too!). You can't position subjects (especially people) near the edges. It's seems to take darker pictures than my kit lens SEL1855. The lens is very light and now I can take my camera out more often. Seriously consider what types of pictures you want ... MoreThe bokeh is excellent on macro. It's a great additional lens especially if you're like me and enjoy taking nature and scenery pictures over people pictures. Overall I'm very happy with this lens and the price I paid for it. The drawbacks I described are really minor and the lens will give you some amazing pictures once you get to know it. It's not worth the original $300 that Sony wants but if you can get it as a bargain, go for it!

I bought this primarily as a slow-motion lens for the A7Sii. At high frame rates, that body crops in to 2.2, so you need to start with a very wide lens in order to maintain a reasonable field of view for whatever action you're trying to capture. This lens does this, becoming effectively a 35mm lens in HFR mode. So, y'know, it checks that box. But it doesn't give an especially good looking image. You need to stop it down to get anything like sharp focus, which negates the point of it having a fast aperture in the first place. Also, in APS-C mode, there's some pretty significant distortion around the edges and the problem only get worse if you back out further than that (you can go to about 1.3 crop before vignetting becomes a serious concern, even without modding the ... MoreI bought this primarily as a slow-motion lens for the A7Sii. Great lens! Personally, so far after a really short review period, its sharper than my 16-50 kit lens which is what I wanted. Its lighter and less moving parts which makes it easier to carry. And I never used it as a zoom always kept the lens at 16 which is why I decided to buy this lens. Wide open at 2.8 and in low light is does respectively well and didnt have any issues with focus which surprises me. Probably should read the sellers description a lot closer. Lens hood had a weird substance on it. The lens is all beat up. Thankfully the glass is just dusty and no scratches. Didnt come with the uv filter as pictured. I ultimately got this at a good price and it works so Im gonna keep it. But wont ever buy from this seller probably

OK, so the corners are soft, as some reviewers noted. Other than that, can anyone tell the difference from lenses costing multiples of this one? Maybe at the pixel level. My first choice was Sigma 10-20/ 3.5 in Alpha mount and Alpha/ E mount adapter. When I saw how that lens dwarfs the NEX body, I decided to give a chance to this fixed focal length pancake. If it did not meet my IQ expectations, I would have returned it. After dozens of test shots reviewed on 46 TV screen I just cannot justify giving it up for anything larger and more expensive. My NEX 6 kit came with the amazing 16-50 lens and I wanted something wider without going fisheye. 0.75x converter custom made for this lens takes care of that. I keep that converter permanently on. My NEX 6 kit came with the amazing 16-50 lens and I wanted something wider without going fisheye. 0.75x converter custom made for this lens takes care of that. I keep that converter permanently on. With all image corrections by the NEX body engaged, the pictures show hardly any linear distortion, no visible CA. Comparison with Sony 10-18 lens shows that the later is sharper, but the difference can be appreciated only at or near 100% magnification. Viewing the full 16:9 pictures of the same scene on 46 screen does not help recognize which picture was taken with which lens, other than softer corners. Also, at 10mm the zoom lens shows noticeably more perspective distortion (stretching) at the vertical edges than 16mm with 0.75x converter. Sony zoom is smaller and less than half weight than my original first choice Sigma 10-20. To my taste, the 16mm silver combo looks better on the black NEX body than the black 10-18 zoom. Phase detection autofocus does not work with either lens. Zoom has the optical stabilization, 16mm lens does not. That may partially account for the sharpness difference between the two in the handheld test pictures taken indoors.

Very respectable lens but there are some issues...
2 May 2021

This is a very respectable lens when it comes to picture quality and can even compete with some higher end "sony" lenses in that department, however I think I may be returning it. The other night, I was noticing some really bad inconsistencies with AF and this was happening with more than enough light, correct exposure settings, focus speed tested on normal and responsive which is the highest it can go on my camera. I even swapped cameras. Still happened. I swapped to the 18-135 zoom lens that came with my A6400, and it performed just fine, with no AF issues whatsoever. Very very odd. I'm guessing this could be why this lens is so cheap and why many people like it but for me the longevity is worrisome, now I am paranoid about how long of a shelf life this thing ... MoreThis is a very respectable lens when it comes to picture quality and can even compete with some higher end "sony" lenses in that department, however I think I may be returning it. I'm guessing this could be why this lens is so cheap and why many people like it but for me the longevity is worrisome, now I am paranoid about how long of a shelf life this thing actually has. Its probably not very long. It also feels VERY cheap and I noticed you really have to force that mount if you want to hear it click into the cam body. Not a good sound or feeling, so i've just rarely taken it off unless absolutely necessary. Maybe skip this lens and go for a (cheapish) wide from sigma, samyang or tamron. I've never had any issues with any of their budget friendly lenses and they are backed by pretty good warranties. If I had to go for only one wide prime, I am replacing this with the sigma 16mm f1.4 contemporary. Its bigger and undoubtedly heavier but better quality than this for sure and ABSOLUTELY NO ISSUES WITH AF. That can be so frustrating to shoot a whole session only to find out after, you have to go and do it over because the lens isn't behaving as it should. If this is all you can afford, go ahead and roll the dice. Its a good looking lens and sharp, but the quality and longevity may not be there with this offering from sony.

It does not capture fine details clearly enough, but do I need absolute sharpness in most of my shots? Not sure. So, sometimes you just want to take a walk with a light setup and take a snapshot without bothering, but just for fun.For these purposes, 16/2.8 is a good companion, from f4-5.6 it's pretty capable. There is a magnificent Sigma 16 / 1.4, but its size and weight the ruins are all the joy of a long walk 10-15km, it's better to take my 16-70mm with the same dimensions.I would be glad to see a sharper but equally form factor lens in the future.
