I really like the Affinity Series PJ Bass, for a host of reasons. First of all, it's got both P-Bass and Jazz Bass pickups, which lets you customize a bit. Secondly, the fingerboard feels very comfortable to me. Though some of the frets are a bit far apart, which will probably give smaller hands a hassle, there is not a lot of problems with the shape and feel of the bass.Secondly, the tone is very good. Customizing it, I find that I like having both pickup knobs turned all the way up, because it has a plunky sound that I really like. However, you can also give it a Beatles-bass consistency with some customization. There's really not that many limits to what you can make the bass sound like. There's usually minimal crackle, but the main con for me though is that the amp has no overdrive settings, so you'll have to spend money on a pedal for that. Other than that though, I highly recommend this pack and I think most people will have considerable fun playing it.

As the headline says...it's very enjoyable to play. I've even made several recordings using it instead of my Fender USA Pro 2 Precision. It does a decent job on the P pickup; the J has lower output. To my surprise I'm really digging the "raw" feel of the neck; it's bare, tho sanded well. Another surprise: neck profile width and taper is like a J bass, yet the depth/shape feels more like a P! Huh!? Hey, works for me! With its black body and pickguard and the maple fingerboard it looks like it means BUSINESS! Point removed for the too-stiff tuner action. And then...I've managed to get the action very low, just where I like it. (FWIW, even on my USA Pro 2 I had to shim the neck to be able to get the level of low action that I prefer.) It has a more "roasted" color than my blonde strat, I really like the look and it plays very well after some adjustment. I did have one dead note high up on the neck that may require some fret work. Tomes cant be beat at this price.

Huge Sound for Small Price

Besides looking bad*ss in black and maple, the volume, tones and character of this bass makes it easily one of my favorites. The neck is unusual in that it's completely void of urethane finish; it feels "raw" although very well-sanded. But my favorite feature are the pickups. Paired with my Acoustic B300HD/Fender Rumble 700w 2x10, the P pickup crushes my little studio with thunder. Wow. The J pup has the familiar "snappiness" and mid-freq presence so many modern bassists enjoy. I bought it primarily for practice and band rehearsals, and as a backup...but I now consider it good enough for gigs. Finally, I'm very pleased that the bridge is of a quality that permits pretty low action, a must for all of my basses. Should you be on the fence about buying this bass, I suggest finding a GC that has one in stock/on a hanger and giving it a spin in person. Then you can compare it to Squier CV and Fender Mexi basses. The weak point, and is common with lower-priced basses, is fret sprout, sharp fret edges. But even so it's really not that bad. I hope I've helped you make an informed decision.

I really like the bass I found, I played a bunch of these and they were all different. I got this one brand new in the box after playing a floor model. But after opening and inspecting, the setup was not really that good, so I did the setup, polished a few minor flaws and it plays excellent. I noticed the sound and the tone variation when blending the volumes and the tone pot really makes a difference, I can say that this was not the case of all of them I played. Mine has a three piece body, I've seen 1 and 2 piece bodies as well in this same model. I could not find another three piece, that's why I fixed the problems and kept it, because it sounds so good, there is something definitely different about this one. I would be hard pressed to find another bass like this one.I've played this bass with a couple of bands and everyone likes the tone and I can say this bass has character and it is very musical and fun to play.So try it out and see and hear how you like it, I recommend this bass for beginners and professionals.

Lovely bass very little money

Bought this as I was looking for a Jazz and the Classic Vibe series has earned a reputation for being as close to a real USA Fender as you might get from a Squier unless you find a used MIJ version. The previous owner didn't use it as he found it too heavy so it was a great bargain for me. It wasn't perfectly set up but I dovthat anyway with everything I buy so no problems just a partial fret dress 1st and 2nd string frets near the neck. Realy nice to play good range of nice tones. Puts a smile on my face. What more can you want from a bass. It cost about 10 times less than my best bass but it is still a joy to own and play. Great value for the money I paid.

My First Bass
23 February 2023

I've played guitar for about 25 years--just recreationally. I started doing some recording in a home studio, and decided I needed a bass so I didn't have to use a midi keyboard. hahaKeep in mind this review is written by someone who was able to get this for about half the cost that it's going for currently. However, based on how I feel about the guitar, I doubt that would matter, as I would most likely pay the full price for this guitar. The finish on both the body and neck were top notch. No sharp frets. Knobs all turn smoothly. Packaging was fantastic--nothing was damaged upon delivery. Getting an amp with it, albeit a small practice amp, makes the deal a no brainer. Definitely recommend.

There are a couple of key issues when buying a bass on a budget: Sound quality and playability. The bass has Fender pickups, which are good quality. The equaliser on the Fender amp is good too. It is only 15 Watts, so not enough for live gigs, but great for home use. The aux input is great for playing along to tracks and the headphone output very useful, if you need to keep the noise down.Playability is often an issue with budget guitars, but the neck and frets on this bass are fantastic. For an Ex-display, it had some scruffs that can be cleaned and very few minor marks you wouldn't even see unless you pointed at it.The kit came with a 15w amp, which I've heard that in terms of 15w amps, the fender rumble is quite good, especially for beginners, however I would definitely consider getting a better 40w amp in the future once I get better at playing. But for a beginner £270-300 kit, I'm not going to complain. Although maybe a pick of some sort would be nice (but I understand the kits are bought from fender/squier so I am unaware of the control you have in this.)I don't know much about amps, but I feel as if there should be more variation/settings than just bass, mid and treble. Maybe most amps are simple like this, but I feel like no matter how I modify these variables it just doesn't sound as good as I thought it would be. Again, this is most probably because it's 15w and doesn't have the best speaker or whatever technology an amp has. I'm not going to pretend I know everything from just a week of playing. All in all, for a first time bass player/learner this kit will be good enough to learn how to play bass well until I get better and know if I want to pursue this hobby further, so I know if I want to buy a better bass and peripherals in a year or longer.

Superb quality and ease of play. Great with Ernie Ball Group III Flatwounds

I'd first direct readers to the other assessments on this, the walnut body bass and on the other, black body bass. They cover the very many positives. What I wish to add: I asked that Sweetwater do the Plek process on mine. The action is just wonderful. Despite the Sweetwater checks, I did have to set the string-to-string heights, via the understring radius, with a Stew-Mac simple guide. This is done by first setting heights of the E and G, which were properly done by the staff, then using the understring guide to set the A and D. My D was too low and the A a bit high. That done the string-to-string balance was improved. I wasn't happy with the change in tone from the D to the G, feeling the G sound too bright for a non-slapper. Andy Rice gently suggested I consider using flat wounds. I had a set of LaBella and put them on but the G was dead flat. Did lots of reading of customer reviews of flatwounds, then bought Ernie Ball Group III Flatwounds. They are terrific. Now, there is a lot of tone color loss when leaving roundwounds behind, but the Ernie Ball Group III with this bass is a perfect combination. The D to G change of tone is minimized and there is growl on lower frets and the A and E. I think with the Ernie Ball Group III's the E to A tonal difference is closer than some basses where the E will be thick and muffly above the 5th fret and the A quite different in tonality. Very satisfying sound overall. The new strings were a little draggy but Finger Ease fixed that. Great bass now with great strings. Oh, the tuning key action is very smooth. I just got a new Fender American Professional II Precision. Those tuners feel like they're grinding small objects inside!
