Thermoblock machines are renowned for fast heating, and preinfusion saturates your grounds prior to brewing to unlock more flavour from your coffee. Tap & Go Integrated Grinder An integrated grinder means you don t have to make room for another benchtop accessory. Using Sunbeam s Tap & Go technology, you can grind into the filter basket with a single touch. The conical burr construction will allow you to achieve a consistent grind, and there s a generous 30 settings to choose from. Cafesized group head Inspired by commercial espresso machines, this unit comes with a 58mm group head. This extra width allows your grounds to spread more evenly inside the filter basket for more comprehensive extraction. Microfoam texturing Microfoam is steamed milk that is velvety smooth in texture, ideal for creating latte art. What you want is foam with small, even bubbles (unless you are trying to make a cappuccino). This machine s steam wand provides adequate steam to create rosettes, hearts, and more. Microfoam will also enhance the overall flavour of your cup.

Decent coffee but messy and finicky.

I bought this machine after using the same model but without the inbuilt grinder and just used pre-ground beans (this model doesn't like pre-ground beans) and it made great, mess free coffees! This one on the other hand, makes pretty good coffee once you get the grinds and tamp pressure right. I don't know why there's 30 grind settings though - too course bad pour and too fine no pour! I have it set on about 14 and it does the job. The grinder makes a hell of a mess too, I've had to put a container under the handle to catch the overflow, or else it ends up all over the table and I can't fill it with as many grinds as I'd like. For some reason the smaller coffee insert struggles with the double-shot selection - like there's not enough pressure.Overall, it's a decent ... MoreI bought this machine after using the same model but without the inbuilt grinder and just used pre-ground beans (this model doesn't like pre-ground beans) and it made great, mess free coffees! But - eventually - we decided we wanted a bit more control now and the automatic machine needs regular cleaning of the mechanism. We also decided that an automatic machine meant we couldn't try other bean flavours on a cup by cup basis. You can't borrow some ground coffee from someone and try it in a fully automatic machine. And then this Sunbeam popped up in the sales at a price worth giving it a go. It turned out to be a great move. Size wise, both the Beko and this Sunbeam are about the same footprint, so no probs with bench space. Appearance - the Beko is a box. The Sunbeam is a site to behold. It looks impressive and immediately brightened up our bench top. Sounds strange to say, but it did. Next - we used exactly the same beans that we'd been using in the Beko and made two coffees with the Sunbeam with all the settings in default. The improvement in flavour and crema (getting fancy now) was significant. Same beans, improved flavour. Other features of the Sunbeam include - produces consistent and instant hot water within 1 min of turning on; the beans container is also the grind size adjustment and it is amazing how grind size affects coffee flavour; ability to adjust settings easily; a very good user guide with tips on good coffee. I gave a lower score for ease of use simply because it isn't as easy as pressing one button on the Beko. But that is probably unfair as it should be compared to other machines of this type, but this is the first one we've used. Biggest issue might be accuracy required to line up the grind head holder, and then a bit of strength to turn it into the machine as it needs to make a very good seal. But you learn and get used to all this. The only questionable thing is the bean grinder. It is a bit tricky to fill the ground-bean handle thingy to the right amount, and the coffee can scatter. We've tried buying pre-ground coffee but you really have to get the ground size right. Our first attempt was a bit too fine, and so the water went through too slow and the coffee was bitter. The benefit of buying pre-ground is that you can make a different coffee for each person. If you do like the idea of pre-ground, or you have a standalone grinder, it would be worth considering the Sunbeam that doesn't include the grinder. It would then be smaller and cheaper and wouldn't affect the coffee making section. The grinder on this machine works independently of the coffee making section. In summary, I can recommend buying this machine.

Good points:*Great value for the price. To get better than this, I'd imagine you would have to fork out for an industrial model, or 2-3 separate machines. Is it really good?
11 May 2022

Purchased my first Breville Barista Max last July. Loved it! I have had espresso machines for years.. one machine longer than 7 and decided to upgrade to current machineSince purchase of the Breville machine I have had 5 replacements due to the machine not turning on and ceasing to work. The last one I only had for 5 weeks and made no more than 5 cups of coffee. When the machine is functional it is greatI freeze up every time my new machine arrives and thinking how long will this one last

Not happy
2 March 2023

I just literally threw mine in the trash after less than a year. It sux at everything. First, I couldn't have the grind setting on anything over 40% or it would stop after a few seconds, beep and lockout for 5minutes before I could grind again... painful. After descaling with expensive stuff, a few weeks later it just went downhill fast and water was getting inside the electronics which destroyed everything and it wouldn't do anything. Not even worth fixing. Rocket is the only way to go for quality and reliability.

Perfect for a beginner like me
29 April 2023

I love this machine. Easily one of the best purchases I have ever made. I love that it is easy to use (my 7 year old son is even able to do the grinding and tamping part). It takes a bit of trial and error to get the perfect grind and tamp pressure, but once you have that, its all golden. The steam wand is a little noisy but thats no issue. Once I got my flat whites and cappuccinos down pat, I moved onto cold brew and it was just as easy. Overall, excellent machine, perfect for my needs

Perfect, Easy To Use At-Home Coffee Machine!

Since getting this coffee machine 2 weeks ago, I haven’t stopped using it. I even find myself making excuses to make guests coffee, just so I can show off and make them an amazing tasting coffee. As this machine makes it so easy! All the functions are self explanatory (Even for someone who hasn’t made coffee before), and don’t take long to learn at all. The customisable settings such as grind coarseness also make it very easy to fine tune and make the perfect cup of coffee every single time. Sticking with Sunbeam
6 August 2021

This is my third Sunbeam coffee machine, and the purchase was an upgrade from my previous smaller model, which was still going strong after 9 years of use. Only upgraded because I'm working from home more, and the old machine has found a new home. This model has not disappointed. After some initial issues with installing the bean hopper which was a bit tight, and adjustments to the grind, it is now producing excellent coffee. It is quieter and and has a stronger pump, which makes the whole process quicker. Also has good flexibility in terms of being able to adjust the shot size or set different programs which I haven't experimented with yet.The matt black also looks great on the bench and sits nicely on the corner without taking up too much space. A minor criticism is that it really sticks in place so it's difficult to slide out, however attaching a couple of felt spots to the rear feet solved this problem.

This took a lot of guess work out of finding the right coffee for us initially, with the option to experiment later. The grinding function has settings which allow you to grind coffee coarser or finer but we found the base setting to be about right to use with the supermarket coffee beans we've used so far.The machine also has a storage compartment for the cleaning tools and the little cups that hold the coffee within the head/handle. This has allowed us to keep our tiny kitchen looking slightly more organised as well as not losing any small bits. One item that I think is certainly worth having is a knock box which isn't supplied as it's an extra and you can get different shapes and sizes. I would suggest getting one to easily export used grinds from the head/handle.One thing I've noticed which isn't ideal is that moisture does get in underneath the drip tray. I'm pretty sure it comes from the steam function (which works really well) as is only water, however I just wipe it down when emptying the drip tray.In terms of cleaning, there is a cleaning function which is easily explained in the manual. This does require specific tablets and cleaning liquids which are not included in the box. My partner and I haven't needed to clean it as yet, however we will need to do it soon and will need to get the tablets and liquids to do it. My advice would be to buy the cleaning tablets/ liquids when you buy the machine to save you a trip to the shops later on.I've also noticed that some coffee grinds get stuck to the top of the extractor. I usually use the supplied brush to brush it away, or I just run the coffee machine (with the head/handle attached) without coffee and that washes it away as well.Overall, the Barista Max is a great coffee machine that makes excellent coffee and has certainly made our morning routine more enjoyable. Time and care is still needed with this type of machine so if you're looking for a quick coffee hit, I'd suggest a fully automatic one.

Very happy with this coffee machine but there is room for improvement

You do not need to be a master of coffee to enjoy a good coffee from this machine. The milk froths nicely and the coffee is consistently good. I have not mastered latte art yet but all in due time. Also very happy with the built-in grinder. The only area of improvement for this machine is the turning knob to control the steam and hot water. It is very tight and hard to switch between modes. Sometimes it can be a struggle to switch off the steam wand with this knob as the milk is almost overflowing. However, this should not discourage anyone from buying this otherwise excellent coffee machine.
