Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)

It was brand new too. The game mechanics are a little difficult for me because I haven't had a console since Nintendo 64! Can you believe it? I think the difference between this Mario game from the switch is that you are accompanied by someone else that kind of gives you motivation as opposed to the old Nintendo 64 Mario version where you're just kind of by yourself and he just kind of talks to himself like he's a loner but this time he's talking to his hat so that's interesting!!!! 😂 I think my run time is essentially two months because I was working a full-time job and I don't regret moving very fast throughout the game because I really wanted to get Pastor in levels and every time you jump into a new world and you finish that world you have this excitement to see what's to come so I would just quickly finish every level and then just jump onto the next world because I couldn't put the game down. but you should be very interested to see the speed trials on YouTube about this game because it is essentially like so interesting and surprising that people can speed run this for like I don't know maybe in 14 minutes tops. which is crazy to me because 14 minutes is as much time as I took to learn how to wall jump so I don't recommend speedrunning this and just taking your time and having fun. 😊

This game is amazingly fun. It’s the first sandbox style Mario game since Super Mario Sunshine, and in my opinion, it’s a better game. The addition of Cappy and the idea of capturing other characters is unique and quite fun. It’s also very easy to learn how to play as the controls are simple and intuitive to anyone who’s ever played a 3D Mario game. The graphics are top notch. This is easily the best looking Mario game. It supports different methods of play depending on if you prefer holding the JoyCons in each hand or the more traditional pro controller. It also supports a two player mode, with one player controlling Mario, and the other controlling Cappy. This game deserves all the hype it’s gotten.

A good Mario game, just not for me

My favorite Mario game is 3D Land and I haven't played it in years, so my opinion basically means nothing towards this game. I finally got a switch and luckily this game was on sale when I got it. For basically 40 bucks I knew it was a good deal. tldr; it's a good game. Really, it's a great time killer. I'm already 15 hours in and I've got dozens more planned. My gripes with it though, honestly make me think this game is way overhyped. Again, this is a good game, don't get me wrong. Its got some great music and Im glad Nintendo went back to their roots of an open-world type mario game. Its just... In all honesty its not the game for me. The message that I've picked up from everywhere else online is that this game is awesome and anyone who plays it will love it. And if you love open-world Mario games, you'll love this one. If Super Mario 64 and Sunshine are your jam, and you don't dislike the other Mario games, you'll love this one. But for me personally, and from my experience, this game is a time killer Ill forget about very quickly. This just isn't the Mario game for me. Are you going to like it? If everyone else I've heard play this game is right, then yea, you'll love it. But if you're like me and you prefer Mario's later titles that focus more on side-scrolling, you won't have the absolutely astounding time everyone else seems to be.

On occasion I'd pull out the PS3 and play some Marvel vs Capcom... but I decided he was ready for Mario, Animal Crossing, and Zelda and HO BOY what a rabbit hole we fell into. Since then we've gotten the other Mario Switch games (Maker 2, Paper, 3D All-Stars, etc)... gotten into ROMs, custom Flash games... I suppose cosplay & mushroom-induced hallucinations inside a labyrinth of pipes & toadstools is the logical next step. Anyway, this game is PERFECT: the controls, the music, the gameplay. Previous Mario 3D games seem so janky compared to this, or maybe I'm just bad at old Mario 3D games. Odyssey is one of the greatest games I've ... Morewell, it was bound to happen. No Spoilers. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this title. I have liked Mario in the past, from Atari to Wii, although I never played M64, and I didnt own a Gamecube until somewhat recently (I didnt care for Sunshine, probably because I'm more fond of platformer Mario. I thought I'd try it, maybe beat it quickly and get it out of the way. I purchased Odyssey with the console (along with SMB and Mario Kart) as a bundle and haven't so much as played the other two yet. Which is silly, I know. Im in no rush, I said to myself. I just thought I'd focus on this one game for December, and it's been a treat. It's a lot of fun with a variety of challenges, some of which take a bit of trial and error. I would neither like it to be harder nor easier, theres a full range of challenges to keep me interested. I learned quickly that some challenges you encounter simply have to wait, and its satisfying to build your move skills and get to objectives later on when just days ago you thought it some were Impossible. The sheer variety of moves Mario can do is impressive, as well as the motion controls, so much slicker than the original Wii offered, and I still haven't quite mastered some of them. I did go on Youtube a couple of times for tips and tricks, but Ive generally not wanted help, as discovering the game all on its own terms is what makes it fun and memorable. The story is very familiar for Mario, The princess got herself kidnapped for lack of training a proper army after being kidnapped numerous times before. And its no surprise, her Kingdom' subjects are like happy go lucky little toys, meek and mild. Bowser has her once again, as his minions try to foil her rescue by the one man in the Universe who has any chance. Somehow, the Princess never got married all these years, shes a middle aged spinster, and her friend, Mario, is still a plumber and batchelor. And yet his 'stache hasnt grayed yet. Youll battle said minions, recooperating Moons to outfit your dirigible craft to reach further destinations, reconquering from Bowser one World after another on your quest to save her and restore order. I also like the mini games and the retro, 2D platformer bits you find along the way. Nintendo was very clever to include the 2D retro mini levels, and its interesting how they incorporate the 2D play into the maps. There's truly something for everyone in this game, supposing you've played Mario before. But even if you havent, youre in for a game that feels new and special. Now some who have said the game is all about collecting Moons arent wrong exactly. You need them, some of them any way, but they're also fun (and sometimes quite difficult) to collect. Essentially youre going to explore every nook and cranny in each World you travel to. And had the game makers not hidden items for you to find, you likely wouldn't see it all. But theres much more to Odyssey than collecting Moons and Coins. I feel theres quite a range of things to do, characters you encounter, moves to learn, games to play. Visually, this game is a blast, and I often admire their cartooning, animation, object surfaces, and depth of the levels. Last but not least, I find the music pretty cool and varied. Thats one flaw I would admit I wish Nintendo had addressed in the Switch, a Toslink connection so I can pipe audio to my surround sound headphones. Im using an aux cable, but so far, any which cable I use there is some hiss. I can live with it for now, but intend to improve the audio the headphone audio experience with a box (hdmi to hdmi/optical conversion). Some of the Worlds dont seem very large at first glance, but there tends to be much more than meets the eye. A few hours in and you'll see what I mean. Finally, I will say, Switch games seem to really hold their value. And when you're just getting a Switch and looking for titles, super deals seem to be few. That said, if you dont intend to keep every game forever, play and resell the ones you dont find great replay value in after a while and you'll probably find you can get most of your money back (and invest it into another game). I think thats wonderful. Coming from an Xbox gaming perspective, it wasnt usually too long before a game took a nosedive in value, and your local games reseller would offer you $5. But I just paid 60 a few months ago. Ouch! And that's all I have to say about Mario Odyssey. Happy gaming.

Must Have

What can I say? It's the Mario platform adventure title for the best selling Nintendo of all time. Graphics are amazing, the game control is great, the design of the levels are awesome and it's super fun as Mario takes on the likeness of all kinds of different characters. You can pretty much separate this game into two different categories of difficulty. As you play through the game and chase Bowser across the globe the gameplay is pretty simple and relaxing. As a 30+ year old dude, don't judge me I'm a life long Mario fan, the main challenges were easy to accomplish and it was easy to progress to the next worlds. I was able to play along side with both my 9 year old and 13 year in 2 player mode, they are both typically terrible at video games so it was nice to be ... MoreWhat can I say? There's also plenty of fun side challenges along the way. This is a must play for any Mario fan or frankly anyone who owns a Switch.

Not Mario Odyssey, Fake game cartridge inside!!!

Buyer beware!!! Received fake game cartridge!! I bought this for my 5 year old who’s been asking for it all year. She was so excited to finally open it this morning. I opened the package and handed it to her and I heard my 12 year old yell “that’s not Mario Odyssey!” They brought the game to show me and the cartridge is completely fake. Doesn’t even have the metal part on the back for the system to read the game. I don’t understand how Walmart is selling fake games. I didn’t buy this from a private seller on Walmart either. It came directly from Walmart.

One of the best Mario games ever!

I bought Super Mario Odyssey on the same day I bought my Nintendo Switch Console, it was actually the only game I had for the first few months. I think this is an amazing game, that is more than worth the money! I grew up playing Mario games, and this newest edition to the series is quite a bit different than the games that came before. It is most like the Galaxy series, but has a lot of short 2D sections that through back to the original game. Mario Odyssey isn't a 'true' Open-World game, but it really feels huge, and fun to explore, using a spaceship to travel between locations. A cool feature is the motion controls, which can be used when holding the joy-cons. And having loved the Galaxy games, sometimes the motion controls are fun for those that liked them back then, but you can use only buttons too if you want.Another minor annoyance is, many of the post-ending unlockable costumes, require too many gold coins to unlock. (That's in-game collectable currency coins. Thank God there are no microtransactions.) But there are ways to grind for gold coins like any game.The multiplayer option is nice, and you can either have 2 players both take turns controlling Mario, or have a second player fully play as Mario's new sidekick Cappy. I had alot of fun playing the game with my nephew.I highly recommend the game for any Mario fan, definitely among the top Switch games, every Switch owner or Mario fan must play.
