I purchased this DS1522+ to replace a Drobo 5N2, specifically to remove a RAID in my desktop itself and get a snapshot-like feature. There was a bit of a learning curve getting used to the interface, which I now like.Everything is nearly perfect, but falls *slightly* short.* Performance is generally great. I can saturate my gigabit connection when copying to and from, and am strongly considering the 10Gb upgrade.* Performance when reading a directory with tens of thousands of files is slow, in both Windows 10 and Linux (Gnome).* Plex media server is very cool. It's a bit slow, but I think this is only in the web browser client, and the dedicated app (on iPhone and Android) is nearly as snappy as, say, YouTube or YouTube Music. This does require purchasing the app (cheap, but per device), or a Plex server license (not so cheap, but then covers everyone connecting).* Hyper Backup is easy to use and I like an automated backup from an always-on applicance, but it uses full paths for the destination of rsync-based backups, which is annoying structurally. A workaround of sorts is manually adding jobs to Task Scheduler in the Control Panel. You can't see job status in the GUI, though, but you can set up logging.* iTunes on my desktop loses connection to the iTunes Server app regular. I mostly set this up because I could, though.Additional comments:* There's a download manager/torrent client that I've only used a bit, but it's appealing.* Available antivirus is a nice touch.* Mounting as a drive in Windows or a mount point in Linux (via login or login-less guest account) is simple.* Synology Photos has potential for sharing galleries, but of course would use my own bandwidth.* btrfs snapshots are simple to set up, and simple to browse, in case I need the old version of a file or directory.Overall, a solid choice for a NAS if you don't want to roll your own or don't want the power consumption of a NAS desktop.

After researching NAS drives to replace my outdated Drobo 5N, I decided on a Synology product due to the myriad success stories and praises across the internet. I chose the DS1522+ based on the 5 bay capacity so I could transfer my WD Red Plus drives to the new unit without losing capacity. I must say I was excited to get the server-like capabilities that Drobo didn't offer.Upon ordering I downloaded the pdf manual and printed it to read and familiarize myself with the unit. I was disappointed because the manual is mostly a compendium of links to blog posts on the Synology web pages. Transferring the pdf to my pdf reader at least let me follow the links.I must say this unit is far more capable than my expectations. These additional capabilities bring along greater complexity in setup. Once setup though the DS1522+ has performed admirably with my set of "practice" disks. I opted to operate with 2 2TB drives raided and one 4TB drive. These were set up as two storage pools with a single volume each. Within these volumes I was able to create discrete shares all with independent priveledges! I like this idea so I can create a 2-drive mirrored store for backups independent of my general data store. The Disk Station Manager (v7.1) is functional and complete. The UI can be cumbersome and confusing at times. Several trips to "Help" were needed during use. When all is said and done, I think I made the right choice going with Synology's hardware. The software is just a necessary evil and not that big of a distract or because in regular operation the software is unused. I am a little confused about Synology's requirement to establish an account with them in order to enable some features, I need to do some research on this.

Set up and connection was straight forward, but I have been unable to map the NAS server to a drive letter in Win 10 file explorer. All of the available resources on the 'net refer to DSM 7.0, but the current DSM version is 7.1, and the process is apparently different. No success mapping the drive to date.

I sent back the DS1522+ for repair, as it was too noisy. Coolblue was so kind to provide a new one after 2 weeks, but that proved just as noisy. When put on a desk, the whole desk vibrates at high frequency. The wind noise from the 2 ventilators is also so loud that people sitting in the living room 10 meters away can hear it. I never had an issues with the sound volume of my old DS411.I will move the DS1522+ to the basement, after installing some extra cabling.I would not recommend using this device at home or in a small office, unless you have a room where you can hide it away.
There are a few subtle things about Synology's DSM OS and the optional applications that I wish were designed a little differently. But overall it's an excellent system, both software and hardware. I have this DS1522+ at my house and a DS920+ at my parents' house, using 12TB IronWolf NAS disks in SHR. Both households' basic storage and backups are handled locally, plus BTRFS snapshot protection, plus periodic remote snapshot replication between them for disaster preparedness. No ongoing cloud costs, with complete control over who and from where they are accessible.
The unit is quiet when idle but the disks do make a bit of noise when accessing / uploading files. It took me about 3 days to upload roughly 12TB from various disks. It would be nice if there were some more detailed instructions in the box. The online docs are not very good either when it comes to setting up storage pools and volumes. I would rate the docs at 2 stars
My ds412 had been running without issue for about 8 years but I found myself getting quite anxious that the drives were well past their use by date. I opted for the 1522 and have no regrets. The 8gb of ram alone is with it. I was working with 2gb before with docker instances running. Definitely recommend.
I'm not terribly IT equipped so there was a learning curve and some growing pains with properly running this. Physical installation and incorporating it into my network (Mac) were straightforward enough with the help of some YouTube videos. There is no manual. The initial write speed was cripplingly slow, however. The fix required some time on the phone with Synology's tech support and my internet provider and installing a new modem and router. Now it's writing incredibly fast.My biggest disappointment is that it doesn't play well with Capture One. I had hoped/intended to be able to work on CO sessions from the NAS. This would have allowed me to open up any session from one place vs running an individual drive. Consequently, the NAS is now just a backup with the ... MoreI'm not terribly IT equipped so there was a learning curve and some growing pains with properly running this. This would have allowed me to open up any session from one place vs running an individual drive. Consequently, the NAS is now just a backup with the ability to be remotely accessed online. Had I known this prior to purchasing it may have given me pause but I'm still happy with the speed of the unit and it's a relatively affordable backup solution.
I recently purchased the 1522+ as a redundant backup NAS for my videography related backups. It also serves as a Plex server on my local network. This is my fourth NAS from Synology, with 3 still working away. I believe in redundancy, and this 1522+ is a welcome addition. I have currently installed 4 of the 18TB Seagate IronWolf HD's installed, and they are working perfectly. It took a while to copy all 7TB of backups to the new NAS, along with my 7TB of videos, but are all copied and performing as expected. I have no lag or stuttering to any of my 13 devices on my local network. I am also able to access my NAS from anywhere, due to the accessibility of Synology account. I highly recommend this NAS to anyone looking for massive storage, and a great Plex server.
I had the Synology DS1512+ which had served me well however it was not capable of being updated to DSM 7. The DS1522+ I just picked up is really packed with features and performance. I was able to purchase 32GB of generic (non ECC) RAM to upgrade it from the factory installed amount of 8GB ECC and that will come in handy when I start building virtual machines. Migration was stupid simple and amounted to moving the drives from my old NAS to the new and click migrate. My old NAS was still good and I threw some other drives I had laying around and rebuilt it into my backup NAS and Syslog server. Highly recommend this model for home techies looking to get into VMs and potentially wanting to explore 10GB network speeds.
