All you really need

Considering price, size, weight, versatility, build quality, and of course, image quality, you'd really have to pull a rabbit out-of-your-hat to beat this lens. Just think about the range, 18-400mm. I'll bet if we had the data we'd find that most individual prime or zoom lenses that consumers purchase purchased fall within this range. For example, 50mm, 35mm, 85mm, 18-135mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, just to name a few. It's also possible, but not guaranteed, that those lenses that cover a small portion of the 18-400mm span are a bit better than this lens. But I believe that for many, if not most people, this lens will do it all with surprisingly good results. It's not a f/2.8 of even an f/4.0 but in decent light, it captures excellent images. If you're posting images online or printing 4x6, 5x7 (or even larger) you'll never see the difference. I initially purchased one of these for my wife to use with her Canon 80D to provide her with more reach than the very good 18-135mm USM kit lens provided. She has zero tolerance for the concept of having to swap lenses, so a one lens solution was required. I tried several zooms from Canon and Sigma for her but they just didn't fully scratch that telephoto itch. When this Tamron 18-400 was available, I purchased one and voila, we had a home run! She is happy and so am I. I liked her results well enough to buy one for myself to use in lieu of my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens on my 7D Mark II for casual outings or when I just don't want to carry the weight or handle the size. There is a clear difference in image quality between these two lenses between 100-400mm full-screen on my 24 inch monitor as there should be considering the Canon lens costs more than 3 times as much. However, if you didn't have an identical image to compare with, you'd be pleased. I also don't have the 18-100mm focal length and need to change lenses to get wider angle shots. I recommend this lens to anyone who wants good bang for their buck and doesn't have the means or desire to spend more money on lenses for casual or street photography.

Excellent walk-around and all-purpose lens

I have several other Tamron lenses that I use on my Nikon D500, with which I have been very happy. I decided that for some trips with baggage size and weight restrictions, I really need a single good quality lens that could cover nearly all of my needs from wide angle to strong zoom. I read lots of reviews of this lens before purchasing it, and overall they were very positive. Although I have only had this lens for a few weeks, I have used at the full range from 18mm up to 400mm under multiple conditions. I have been delighted with this lens. The zooming ring is somewhat stiff, but I like that so that it is easier to control and keep at the desired zoom range. Focusing is fast even with some very shady conditions, although not quite as fast as with the 70-210mm f/2.8 lens. There may be some slight softness, especially at the edges when fully zoomed, it is minimal and 1 slightly soft photo actually was easily sharpened with Topaz Sharpen AI. The lens is light weight for the range of zooming that it provides and thus is very easy to carry even for fairly long hikes. Thus, this lens will be my all around lens for almost all of my photo tours, except African safaris, when I also will be using my Tamron 150-600mm G2 lens for a lot of the wildlife photos and occasional low-light circumstances when I may prefer my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, which is very sharp and fast focusing.

4.5 StarsIf you are looking for a versatile travel lens where you don't have to constantly switch out lenses, consider this Tamron. I have had this lens for just under a week and have given it a good workout. So far, I am quite impressed. The lens tends to creep. Not while shooting, but when the lens is pointed downwards. This is a bit annoying. Other than that, I am really satisfied with the results and can't wait to take it on future travel adventures.

Hoped for better. Although there are shots you might miss if you had to be switching lens for close up and distance.

To be fair, I was used to incredible sharp clear images from my 70-300 Nikon lens with Nikon d7100 camera. However, it started having trouble focusing after years of use. Forced to find a replacement I looked for something that gave me more range w/o being too heavy. I am still trying to get used to the lack of sharpness. It does take shots at great lengths but they look more like newspaper photo images. I wish my old lens still worked. When you take a shot, you always want it to be the absolutely best it can be.

The focus was fast even with the variable aperture, and a lot more keepers than I would've expected from a lens in this price range. It is definitely on my shortlist of acquisitions soon. Now I will tell you about Lensrentals. The experience was so incredibly easy, picking out what I wanted, when I wanted it here, and was pleasantly surprised that they actually got it here a few days earlier than I might've needed it. It gave me a good chance to run the lens through its pace before taking it on the trip. The way they pack these things is bombproof they put it wrapped inside a lens bag or carrier and then inside a pelican style hard case. I don't think you could damage it in there. If you even tried this is not the first time that I have used Lensrentals, and it is definitely not the last. The whole process took every bit of worry and threw it out the window. Thank you, Lensrentals!

I wanted to evaluate this lens for possible purchase and found the 5 day rental to be exactly what I needed. I wanted a zoom to carry in the field that was not so heavy that it was back breaking or difficult to hand hold. The VC worked well enough if I used a higher shutter speed and in low light situations I pushed my ISO up and still got nice images. This is not a fast lens, but in daylight conditions it works fine enough given the cost and weight penalty one would pay for a faster lens. The sharpness was pretty good as I tested this at full zoom and then did a max crop with my Canon 90d to determine how well the image held up. I also felt that the manual focus produced the best result for an object not in motion. Under different circumstances LR might be the better deal.

I adore this lens, and it really is the only lens I use now. I used to carry around a 18-55 and a 75-300, sometimes a few other lenses too, but I find that the versatility of this single lens outweighs the hassle of needing to change a lens to get the right shot. I especially love fitting it to my smaller and older Rebel SL1, it makes this little camera into a versatile powerhouse. The shutter snaps fast enough for action photos, and I find the auto focus to be exceptionally quick, despite the reach of the camera. Though I personally don't use AF as much as MF. I also like that there's a good amount of resistance when turning the lens, making it easy to get the optimal focus despite the zoom. And the build quality is top notch as this lens feels and looks OEM. Personally, I've sold a number of other lenses thanks to how flexible this one is.10/10, absolutely would recommend.

Sometimes the wildlife is too far away for the animal to be in focus all of the time which can be pretty frusterating for me but I sharpen all of my photos through LR. But if the object is closer to you and you zoom all the way in it is GOLDEN. I even have snapped pics of little bugs and they have turned out amazing for it not even being a micro lens. If you are looking for something weightless & to travel with to take landscape and shoot some wildlife I would recommend this for you.
