If you're new to photography and just want to have something nicer that didn't come with the kit and do not want to be swapping out a variety of lenses while walking around with your family or friends, this lens will cover everything you need.My only "con" just because, nothing is really perfect, is that it might be a touch on the heavier side. Personally I do not mind its weight, I think others might.Once again, for me, I love this lens. I consider myself an amateur/hobbyist photographer at an intermediate level. This lens was recommended to me, and so far, I love it! It bridges a gap between the two kit lenses that came with my Canon Rebel T6 in that it sits between the 18-55mm and the 75-300mm. It allows me to get a wide range of shots without having to constantly change lenses. It's also fast when it comes to auto-focus and I have been very pleased with the shots I've taken so far. It's at a great price point too for someone like me who wanted to upgrade from my kit lenses to something a little better without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars. Just be aware that you do get what you pay for. It takes great pics, but it's not going to compare with high-end lenses.

It has performed well, as expected, for stills and stable limited-zoom video. Stiffness makes video zooming wobbly when in my old hands. It's good for video -- _if_ on a sturdy tripod _and_if_ not going past the transition points, at which it twitches a bit.

NOT FOR ME
30 March 2022

You say; five stars and it's not for you !!!! Well, here's why. I purchased this lens as a gift for my granddaughter who received a Canon body, but without lenses. After some research, and reading the reviews, I decided this would be a good all around lens for someone just starting out using a DSLR, she's 30. So far her comments are: Grampy, it's not to heavy, easy walk around lens, takes great photos, looks good, and the best one, it was FREE, and I love you !! After I talk to her more, maybe I'll get one for myself. Still shooting at 82. And like I always say: B&H, you're still the best after all these years! If you are looking for a lens in this range, my granddaughter recommends it .

Nice walkabout lens for Canon Rebel series
3 February 2022

Nice inexpensive general purpose lens. I bought this to go on my old Rebel T5 for the wife to shoot with when we go out hiking. She is just learning, but still taking nice shots with this lens. Build quality is good. Nothing that feels loose, rings move smoothly, but with enough resistance. Autofocus work pretty well, given the body it's on. Pictures are maybe a bit sharper than I was expecting for the price. It is a good value lens, and I would recommend to anyone looking for an AIO zoom lens that won't break the budget. I also own a Tamron 18-300 for Sony E mount that is more than double the price of this, but doesn't necessarily double the picture quality. For the pictures, the clouds were shot @27mm f5.6, the squirrel at 200mm f14, Flower closeup at 140mm f8, ... MoreNice inexpensive general purpose lens. Proud owner of Tamron product!

This lens was purchased as an affordable upgrade to the Canon 18-55mm kit lens that comes with many Rebel series DSLR cameras. The lens shows a solid build quality and has a nice weight to it. It doesn't have a cheap, 'plastic' feel either. I appreciate that this lens needs no electrical power for manual focus - a giant plus for my camera setup which provides no power to the lens. This lens connects to my Canon EF lens/MFT body adapter ring securely with no noticeable play. The range on this lens is extraordinary! Pulling back, the wide angles make me want to dive into realty photography; and zooming in, I can safely get into frame the face of some wildlife I'd otherwise avoid completely! Fortunately, that Vibration Control really kicks in when you zoom in deep! The picture is crisp and the colors seem true. The only drawback I've noticed is when my Lumix GH4 is mounted on a video tripod (Davis & Sanford) with the lens mounted (using a Zhong Yi Optics adapter ring), the rubber zoom grip catches against the rubber top of the mounting plate for the tripod head. Other than that, I'm completely satisfied with the purchase and an now the proud owner of a Tamron product!

Relative to price, this is an excellent lens
6 October 2018

I won't get into details on this lens because it is a very low priced lens compared to other lens in the market. Relative to price, it performs very well, and - relative to price - it's a great value.I will continue to reiterate "relative to price" because I believe you need to take into consideration this important aspect when reading people's reviews. I don't feel that others take this into account at times, but you must because price is generally a direct correlation to quality and performance. In virtually every market, you get what you pay for, and if you pay significantly less for an item compared to others in the market, you HAVE to expect that you made some type of sacrifice. Therefore, I would recommend that you read between the lines in reviews that ... MoreI won't get into details on this lens because it is a very low priced lens compared to other lens in the market. In virtually every market, you get what you pay for, and if you pay significantly less for an item compared to others in the market, you HAVE to expect that you made some type of sacrifice. Therefore, I would recommend that you read between the lines in reviews that compare this lens to lenses of 2x, 3x, or even 4x the price. For the price, this lens performs well, is well built, and has a great warranty. This is a great hobbyist lens, light for travel and for "small hands" (kids learning photo like my daughter which was why I purchased it), with Auto Focus, Vibration Compensation, and a VERY usable range from 18-200mm. Auto focus is okay- not fast but still relatively accurate, but it's very reliant on the body it's mounted on. On my daughter's D3100, it's "acceptable", and on my high-end bodies, it's very good (especially in lower light in comparison) - just pointing that out because you have to consider what body this is put on when you read reviews in regards to AF. Images are very good - not tack sharp, but very acceptable of a lens of this price, but also significantly impacted by aperture. My recommendations:- Don't treat this as a bokeh master - The lens is not nearly as sharp wide-open as it is stopped down 2 stops. Many lenses don't have this drastic of a difference, but I notice this one does. Stop it down if you want considerably sharper images. Shoot in aperture priority mode and keep it at f/8.- Turn off VC unless you need it. The VC works well when hand-held at slower shutters, but this is an early implementation by Tamron of VC so it kind of gets in the way when it's not needed (have witnessed slight blur induced while tripod mounted when we forgot to turn it off). If shooting with high shutter speed or tripod mount, turn it OFF.- The zoom ring is stiff when new, and a bit hitchy. But it does loosen over time, and then the hitch is less of an issue. But again, this isn't the quality kind of glass that you necessarily need a fast, smooth zoom ring for. This is a lens that fills a great niche - entry level AF lens with good VC and a perfect zoom range for a single-lens hobbyist or learner, at an unbeatable price.

Versatile best budget lens on its segment

This is a budget friendly zoom lens which is designed for everyday use. The focal length covers from 18 mm wide angle to 200 mm telephoto covers wide variety of shots from landscape to portraits which makes it a versatile lens for travel or every day use. The look and feel of the lens is impressive with good quality plastic that it looks and feels sturdy. The VC (Vibration Compensation) is the best selling point of this lens. Tamron has nailed the image stabilization aspect of this lens and it doesn’t feel any different from expensive canon or Nikon lens IS technology. You may notice a slight movement in the viewfinder when the VC is used for zooming in on the subject for the first time but it is hardly noticeable or a disturbance for me. The image quality is excellent in mid f stops (f 11 to f 16) which produce more detail and sharpness throughout the image. But when using the lens with wider angle the image quality at the center is pretty good but becomes soft around the corners and can see chromatic aberrations. At 200 mm telephoto, you can see some distortions or noise around the edges but it does a great job in good lighting conditions. For indoor use, you should make sure you have good light to get the better out of this lens. I would suggest to use lower aperture and shutter speed to allow more light for the lens in indoor/low light conditions. Using a tripod will make your life easier as hand holding a camera in low light increases the odds that the shot will be blurry, especially with a shutter speed of less.Verdict: Overall a budget friendly all in one use lens ideal for travel and everyday use. If you explore and get to know how to extract the most out of this one, I am sure you will be impressed with this lens from Tamron! Not to remind you that Tamron is one of the best makers of DSLR camera lens in the market.

good value
25 June 2022

I studied this and 2 more expensive options for a new handy wide-to-tele main shooter, supplanting my 17-70 which is acting up. Retired, I don't need the sturdiness and extra oomph of the Canon 18-200:3.5-5.6, nor the extra weight of the Tamron 18-400. After just a couple of casual shoots, this one seems good enough. Short-term, I was most concerned about hunting for focus at f:6.3 instead of the previous limit 5.6. This did well for normal subjects in a moderately bright room and for moderate action in daylight. I have not yet tested further.

great all round lens that covers all aspects, for when you just want a camera with you just in case.
30 December 2021

Wanted an all in one lens to carry around when out walking. It is roughly the same size as my Nikon 18-105mm but actually lighter and that slightly longer range. The quality is not as good as the Nikon but you have to look really really hard to see this. Most people who see my pictures are always impressed by them and see them for what they are. Love the newer version of this lens as it has the vibration control built in, you can actually hand hold as low as 1/30th. Worth the upgrade.
