I rented this lens to try out to see if I liked it enough to buy and save money rather than buying the Nikon version. I had the opportunity to photograph a theater performance with it. Using a Nikon D850, I found the autofocus to be incredibly inconsistent using only the F2.8 aperture. Many of the shots I took came out just slightly out of focus. I have a D810 and I had to make an AF-finetuning adjustment of +19, which I'm not thrilled about. Most of this is due to it being a 3rd party, I assume. My Nikon lenses are adjusted at +5, so probably the rest is a 3rd party lens issue. But after calibration I did a handle held test at 1/13, f2.8 and ISO 10,000 and it quickly nailed the focus on my target. Any darker and I wouldn't be able to see. After making a color temperature adjustment the shot came out surprisingly good and perfectly in focus, though a little grainy, but better than no shot at all. Also I've found no issues with the sharpness of the this lens and overall I'm pleases with my purchase. This lens worked great with my Nikon D750. Auto focus was fast. The Image quality was excellent. One quirkā¦the VR switch and the auto/manual focus switch on the lens can be accidentally switched on/off. Other than that, I was very impressed. It was even better than the Nikon 70-200mm that Iāve used. This is one lens that I may eventually buy.

The new lens hasnt seen much use since I received it because it is out of season for the purposes I intend to use it most.But based on initial tests (and fine tuning the auto-focus) it looks like I will like it every bit as much as I did the rented copy. Rather, shooting at f/5.6 means that I achieve the extra sharpness associated with shooting 2 stops above maximum aperture instead of closer to the less sharp end of the aperture range as I would be with, for example, an f/4 lens.Due to the weight of the lens, I anticipate that I will most often be using it mounted to a tripod or monopod rather than handheld.Some people need exceptionally fast and accurate auto-focus acquisition. Unfortunately, I cant speak to that characteristic of the lens because it is not a high need for my typical shooting situation.

The build quality and feel of the lens is fantastic. Coming from a 400g zoom, the increased bulk of this lens was not actually that big of a deal.The lens is front heavy, but the balance point is well place, allowing for easy access of the focus ring and switches. Accessing the zoom ring is less ideal.The image stabilization is highly effective and utterly silent. It doesn't quite hit the claimed 5 stops of assistance, even in mode 3. On a similar note, bokeh is incredibly soft, with no outlining or concentric rings to speak off, it's near perfect.I haven't used the Canon or Nikon versions, but besides slightly faster and quieter autofocus I really fail to see what would justify paying double over this lens. It's built like a tank, and functions beautifully.Just don't go into it thinking have such a nice lens will automatically make you take better pictures. If you don't specifically require the action stopping shutter speeds and shallow depth of field this lens offers, you are wasting your money. Get a cheaper F/4 zoom instead.

The weight comes mostly from of the wide aperture in this zoom range and solid construction. I rarely use a tripod/monopod because I'm always moving around and was worried that the weight would be an issue. However, after using this lens as a walking-around lens, I was happy to find that this is not a big issue. Note that all f/2.8 lenses in this focus range have a similar weight. Thus, if this is an essential factor, you might want to consider an f/4 lens (~0.9kg) or smaller.Enjoy.
Lens arrived 2 (free!) days early in near new condition. Popped it on my Z7 and went out to play! At first focus was soft, I recalibrated for mild front focus and got shots sharper than my Nikon z series 24-70 s f4! Big shocker was the vibration control. Shooting at 1/20th with 70 year old hands and getting shots very sharp indeed! I surprised myself and bought the thingā¦.Before retirement I used to help Retail and Service companies improve their customer experience functions. Lens Rental could serve as an example of excellence in this area.

I was to the point that I was switching to ālesserā lenses to get the shots ā like Tamronās own 17-35mm which is a sweet lens, or their 100-400mm which was more consistent at 100-200 than the 70-200mm G2 (shame, shame, lol) ā and while typically not as sharp as the G2 lenses, when you have accurate autofocus in these other lenses, you end up keeping more shots!The first copy I got was horribly with auto-focus, sometimes slow, sometimes fastā¦and no matter of Tap-in calibration was able to create consistent performance. I also had to combine a ton of AF Fine Tune in addition to Tap-in calibration, which is simply unacceptable - That unit was sent back for exchange, only for me to get one that back-focused pretty bad. But I was able to calibrate it quite well with my SpyderLensCal as well as with Focal software. But, like the 24-70mm G2, the calibrations I did didnāt hold in the field, as I just started getting really bad shots. Each time I re-calibrated, the lens took a different calibration. Again, tested it out in the field, and poor results.So I did some tests and concluded that this lens (as well as the 24-70mm) had issues when the focus distance changed substantially ā if I took at shot, then defocused to the rear or to the front heavily, I couldnāt get focus back on the original subject; it was either front of rear focused. If I made small changes in defocus, the lenses were fine. The lens was really bad at the long end (200mm).As well, something I noticed immediately was that both of these lenses (24-70 and 70-200) actually LOST significant sharpness as you stopped down! What?! The lens sharpness was best at wide open, and dropped off between f/4 and f/11 (with f/6.3 and f/8 being the worst! Stay what??), and then actually got better up to f/16. What a really weird sharpness curveā¦Then JUST recently Tamron released firmware updates which 1) changed the calibration numbers again (I reloaded my previous calibrations and they arenāt even close now), and 2) the lens seemed to actually perform worse.I spent more time trying to calibrate these lenses than I did in post processing, and thatās a problem.I hope you get a good copy if you purchase ā I didnāt (twice). And I no longer own either of them.
Purchased this newer model at a great price to replace my original Tamron SP 24-70mm VC DI USD f/2.8 (G1) used on my Nikon D750 & D780. (Tamron produced the first 24-70mm Auto Focus zoom with Image Stabilization, or Vibration Reduction for Nikon.) The new version looks more modern, slightly lighter to the feel, ruggedly built, works fine in snow storms, functions similarly as the original; however, AF on the G2 seems slightly faster, especially on my D780 and on my Nikon Z cameras using the FTZ adapter. Both lenses produce similar image quality with the G2 showing sharper corners at wide open apertures. One thing I noticed is that when using the G2 for video on my D780, it seems to have greater focus breathing than the original.
