I have been a fan of Tamron lenses for almost a decade now, having the 24-70 f/2.8 VC and the 70-200 f/2.8 VC. The new generation of zooms (G2) are the best professional level values on the market today, outclassing their expensive Nikon counterparts. I started purchasing their new primes this past year, and the quality, value, sharpness, contrast and color rendition are second to none. I'm a professional who makes his living with glass, and I don't compromise. I own the 90 macro, the 35 f/1.8 VC SP and now the 45 f/1.8 VC SP. This lens has the best optical performance in a standard prime, bar none. I've shot them all: sigma art, Nikon, Zeiss, and the Tamron 45 outclassed them all. I bought mine for $399 new!!! I wasn't sure if I wanted a wide angle lens or not I had a play with a 10-20 canons APS-c lens on my old 50D some years ago liked it but didn't think I would want one in my kit bag. then I got a EOS R full frame body and was looking at their new lenses that are coming out for it RF mount and the cost ! so I looked at Sigma and Tamron to see what I could find and after youtube reviews a lot lol I thought I would give the SP 15 -30 F2.8 G2 a go. I field tested it last Sunday at a stately home and wow I put it on and only changed it for a macro 100 F2.8 for some close ups oh and a 70-200 F4 for 3 shots as I couldn't get close as I would have had to swim for it lol. I loved the lens from the first photo taken how much you can get in standing so close is great some shots ... I can honestly say I prefer this lens to the Nikon 14-24. The sharpness is honestly astonishing, and I love having the ability to zoom to 30 mm. I find myself less and less shooting at 15 mm so the small degree in wide angle is not so important. However, I find myself routinely shooting between 24 and 30 mm. So the trade off is more than justified. While you can't use screw on filters, I've turned to the NiSi filter system available for the Tamron 15-30 and it works perfectly well, though it is a bit cumbersome and awkward. Though you'd be forced to use a complicated filter system with any ultra-wide. I have found that this lens can catch some sun flares, but mostly only when shooting directly towards the sun on a bright day. I don't think there's a lens in ... Read all of the literature from Tamron, read all of the reviews, go to a camera store, look at this lens and hold it. Mount the camera to the lens, act like you are shooting and how it feels and responds in your hands. It’s time decide if this lens will into your kit. I would have given the lens a 5 if possible due to the lack of any screw in filter to the camera lens. Several companies sell the correct mountable lens holders for square 150mm filters, will multiple slots for stackable filters.Good luck in your choices.
Instead of splurging right away for a $1,300 lens, I tried an $80 rental as a test drive. I was pleasantly surprised that the lens not only arrived in its own small padded 'suitcase,' but came two days early, extending my rental! Returning it was easy. I will definitely use Lensrentals again! Thank you!
Ordered this lens from B&H a week ago to pair with my D850. As far as I can tell everything is in good working order. No noticeable decentering, AF issues that I can detect, at-least not with my copy. Lens output together with D850 provides very good center and mid-frame sharpness rolling off a bit at extreme edges. F/4 to f/8 probably optimal aperture range, but still very decent at f/2.8. Color, contrast, general rendering appears more than satisfactory. Flare suppression appears to be very good and ghosts are generally small and easily cleaned up in Lightroom. Lens distortion also appears to be well managed for an ultra wide zoom. VC is effective, but is quite audible in producing a constant buzzing, hum when on when AF-ON and/or shutter release are activated. ... MoreOrdered this lens from B&H a week ago to pair with my D850. Not anywhere near as loud as a shutter release for example, but quite noticeable. I knew lens would be a beast before buying it, but was still taken aback by how stout and meaty it actually is in the flesh. This doesn’t bother me as a like the overall feel together with the D850 and I personally don’t have issues with lugging heavy gear on hikes, etc. Build quality and feel are excellent. For me the 15-30 G2 feels more substantial and solid that the sister 24-70 G2 lens. This is my first full frame UWA zoom (only used DX format UWA lenses before now) and partly because I don’t really have anything to directly compare to and partly because of the humming VC I have rated 4 stars. Two desert scenes attached below. One with Saguaro cactus in right foreground was shot at 15mm, 1/200th, f/8, ISO64 and one with yellow bush in right, lower foreground shot at 15mm, 1/125th, f11.
This ultra-wide lens has quickly become a real favorite due to the excellent combination of fast maximum aperture, vibration control, very useful zoom range, and solid optical and build quality. At its wide end, this can be used for architectural shots in tight spaces or for stylized shots intended to exaggerate a foreground subject while pushing the background a million miles away. At its long end, the 30mm is a great standard wide range that makes this quite a bit more useful (and keeps me from having to swap it for my 24-70) than if its focal length ended at 24mm. As is true for almost any zoom (except for possibly the Nikon 14-24 at nearly twice the price) in this range, there is mild distortion, so don't expect 100% flawless straight lines, even after automatic ... It's not bad and certainly doesn't hold back my rating; just know not to expect absolute perfection. Since this focal range already allows for relatively slow handheld shutter speeds, it would not have occurred to me that vibration control would be terribly useful. It is. If I want maximum clarity and depth of field, I can stop down to f/8 and still shoot handheld in ridiculously low light at 1/2 second. It's a great walking around lens for urban streetscapes and landscapes. It's also my indoor real estate lens of choice.
Awesome lens !!! Solid construction, well made, sharp optics. Zoom range of 15mm to 30mm is perfect for landscapes, architecture, scenery, and more. Built-in Vibration Compensation works flawlessly and is great for hand held shooting in low light conditions. Auto-focus is fast and accurate, surprisingly even in darker lighting.NiSi S-5 150mm filter system attaches securely to the hood and allows use of a polarizer and other 150mm wide filters. I use Wine Country graduated neutral density, 150mm x 170mm, for darkening skys. some vignetting at 15mm with polarizer, goes away around 16mm, can also be corrected in post.Overall a great lens, plus you get a workout from carrying it around !
Picked this lens up and was very impressed. Great Colors and quite sharp. At the beginning, I considered the Nikon 12-24 F 2.8 because it has been the ultimate lens in this category for years, but after researching this lens, I felt comfortable going with this lens, and I am happy I did. At roughly 60% of the cost of the legendary Nikon lens, I saved a little money and I absolutely love the vibration reduction VC on this lens. You might not think VC is necessary on a wide angle zoom until you are in a situation with no tripod and need to shoot at a slower shutter speed. I haven't tried VC with video yet, but I am sure it would come in handy as well. Though some online reviews claim this lens can go toe to toe with the 12-24 in every category, I am not claiming this, because I have not used them side by side to truly compare them. But, I will say that this lens doesn't disappoint. You see a little distortion wide open, like most if not all wide angle zoom lenses have, but it is easily fixed in Lightroom. The AF may tad slower than Nikon according to many reviews, but the VC more than makes up for it in my book. It is quite heavy, so get ready for a little workout!
I bought this lens 3 weeks ago. I was very apprehensive at first as this is the first time a bought a third party lens. I dropped my Nikon 14-24 while on a job assignment. It really wasnt worth the cost to repair it so I decided to buy a new lens. I only consider another 14-24 or this lens. I have finally use it enough to make some fair assessments of this lens. First thing I noticed and what really stands out about this lens is the color saturation and contrast. Definitely more noticeable and better quality than my old 14-24. The vibration reduction works great. I shoot mainly landscape and although I always use a tripod there are always moments on a shoot that it nice to take the lens off the tripod to take another photo without readjusting my tripod, especially ... First thing I noticed and what really stands out about this lens is the color saturation and contrast. Definitely more noticeable and better quality than my old 14-24. The vibration reduction works great. I shoot mainly landscape and although I always use a tripod there are always moments on a shoot that it nice to take the lens off the tripod to take another photo without readjusting my tripod, especially when the sun is changing so fast. I was concerned about losing that 1degree field of view but I usually find myself shooting between 16 -21 mm. So, I can live without it. Another concern I had was the auto focus, although I find it faster and better than my 14-24 it is still not perfect. It can be slow and hunt in low light and at times could not lock in during early morning hours. I have also found some chromatic aberration while processing in some of the photos but it corrected easily in LR. One thing that I dont care for and still struggling with is the location of the focus and zoom ring. They are in reverse from my Nikon lens. Overall, I am happy with this purchase. I think it is a well made lens and an improvement optically over the 14-24. The picture quality is amazing and in some regards sharper than my old lens. I hope Nikon decides to make an updated version of the 14-24 as I still hold that lens in high regards. However, in the mean time until they do I believe this Tamron 15-30 2g is the better option of the 2!
