First, I believe you must let a scotch breathe approx. 15 minutes before you can receive the true aromas and you must use your entire palate to recognize the true taste. From then on it is what each individual prefers.I have enjoyed single malt scotches for 40+ yrs and for much of that time my preference has been Glenlivet 12 yr (readily available). During the last year I decided I would expand my horizons & do a taste test to identify my list of favorites.I read reviews & picked 7 single malts to taste test. My wife poured 2 & I decided which I preferred. Then I continued to compare 2 & identify my preference (I was very impressed with Glenmorangie Original so I added 3 more Glenmorangie to the mix). Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban ($45.99)10. Glen Ness 12 yr ($27.99)Choices 1-3 are excellent choices for that special treat, Choices 4-8 are very good as your regular selection & choices 9-10 are so-so (I eliminated 9 & 10 from my stock list).I hope this provides a good starting point and you do taste tests to identify your preferences.

Up front, I love Macallan. However, Macallan is confusing everyone with the number of 12-year expressions that they continue to churn out. Here is an example: I've had a regular scotch tasting with a group of friends for the last 20 years. The last few years, part of the tasting has been a side-by-side of Macallan 12 Sherry Oak vs. Macallan No.1, No.2, etc. to see what the distiller was trying to show. The typical Macallan 12 Sherry Oak always scores highly, however, we suddenly had a TERRIBLE Macallan 12 that everyone hated. I couldn't understand what had happened, and checked the Whisky Bible. Sure enough: 12 Year Sherry Oak = 93. Macallan 12 Years Old = 61. I double checked the label, and I had mistakenly bought the "12 Years Old" and NOT the 12 Year Sherry Oak, ... So if you were about to buy this one, you are going to be SORRY!! Unless you are wanting a learning experience like we had, go back and make sure you are selecting the 12 YEAR SHERRY OAK! It is a classic. This one is NOT.

I still have no complaints about this "premium" single malt, which I believe to be the first of its kind. The 12 year old contains a tinge of what I perceive to be hazelnut flavor and has the slightly sweet taste that I required early in my scotch whiskey experience. As I've gotten older, my tastes have broadened to include the smokeier and peatier scotches, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for this one. In fact, I'm drinking it right now.

The most discriminating connoisseur should try the 12 year old Macallan. It is strong, flavorful, and incredibly smooth. After tasting 12 year old Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Chivas, and Balvenie, it is evident that the Macallan is the best option for those seeking something with a robust flavor and a strong scent. Even yet, the Balvenie and Macallan are fairly similar and fall into the same category for those looking for a really flavored Scotch.
The Michael Jackson's Guide to Single Malt Whiskey was a lucky book I was able to borrow from a friend before I ever touched a single malt. I always took Mr. Jackson's criticisms seriously while drinking craft beers since he was the world's greatest craft beer expert. The Rolls Royce of single malt whiskeys, according to his whiskey guide, is Macallan 12. I agree with the wise bard of this elixir after drinking nearly 20 bottles of it throughout the years. Balvenie, Ardbeg, and other well-known brands have all been on my palate, but Macallan 12 remains my go-to distillate of choice.
I searched for the greatest whiskey, best scotch, best bourbon, and other spirits because I'm a complete novice to drinking whiskey.I could not have been happier with my purchase when I tried The Macallan as my first bottle of whiskey to sip at home. Although I still had no idea what I was doing, The Macallan kept appearing in several review websites. Since then, I've tried several other brands and keep coming back without ever finishing the other brands I've tried.Maybe my palette is biased because this was my first experience with a good sipping whiskey; if that's the case, fine by me! The Macallan is the best whiskey I have ever tried in this price range (which is pretty much my limit right now)! A 25 year would be nice to try, but it's totally out of my price ... If your a curious cat like me then you know you want to find something delicious and enjoyable as well as affordable.Wow a triple threat idea. Impossible? Well hold ya horses.A little back ground on me. I have tried b n j .. The generic canadian blended whiskey at the grocery store.. To the johnny walker 18 year platinum. And thru out my journey.. Of trying out 10$ whiskey to 300$ whiskey.. I found that this macallan is the sweet spot. Its single malt so get ready for a refined taste.. Rather than the blended taste which makes it hard to tell if its actually good or not because you are getting hit with multiple sensation at once. You know.. Its like blended is good but it feels like when you eat a hamburger and fries at the same time. Its all good generally.. ... Rather than the blended taste which makes it hard to tell if its actually good or not because you are getting hit with multiple sensation at once. You know.. Its like blended is good but it feels like when you eat a hamburger and fries at the same time. Its all good generally.. But it also makes it hard to pinpoint what exactly you like. Sure.. The hamburger is good either way.And macallan is like picking out the hamburger and eating the pickles and lettuce and tomato separately. Its enjoyable and you can really feel the flavors without being overwhelmed or masked by other flavors. And if you get cheap whiskey.. Its like getting a hamburger and putting alot of ketchup. Its generally good but you really only taste the sweet ketchup or mustard.. Or (chaser) since we are drinking. Now for this price range.. I love the perfect balance of overall enjoying it. It use to be about 40 to 60 bucks but now its about 80 bucks and its still awesome. The numbers are really a reflection or rising prices but the quality stays the same. This is a great drink that is comfortable like a good pair of shoes. And i consider it a sweet spot of affordability and price.Sure.. You can splurge or if your rich.. You can buy better quality but you would be paying double the price to improve slightly.I would say.. This is like 90 out of 100. A a-class drink. If you want that near perfect drink.. Then you can always pay 100 or 200 dollars more for that slight velvety or smoother buzz. But it also depends on the circumstance because this is a great drink to have during dinner or talking and socializing with others. It gets you feeling good and smooth yet.. Its not so refined that you want to sit down.. In silence.. With the lights dimmed.. Playing your favorite music.. With your belly full of food.. And you are at peace and sensitive to the slightest sensory of life.. But those drink cost more. Anyway. Buy it if you can afford it. Enjoy it. I do.
I've had a lot of Highland scotches, but even though I'm a novice, I can definitely tell this one is better. Unmistakable and highly palatable is the sherry casks' little sweetness undertone. By far, this is the best I've ever tried. Macallan is the Rolls Royce of single malt scotches, according to a buddy who once said, and I couldn't agree more. I would like to try an older one someday, but I believe I will first try the cask strength. Watch this space for my review of that book.
I've been getting this one every Xmas for a couple decades now. It's still great but be advised- I think it's been watered down over the last ten years. It used to have a richer flavor and texture, had some foam at the top with a little mineral water. Unfortunately, not so anymore. Still an acceptable bottle though. The price for it has nearly doubled in just the last ten years as well. But once macallan gets it's hooks in you, it's hard to stray and so I get it anyway!
The very greatest whisky I've ever had for sipping! This is easy to swallow! Out of curiosity, I took my first shot at a restaurant, and I'm pleased I did. It is incredibly subtle and well-balanced. Up until I discovered this, I thought bourbon was my favorite type of whiskey. It is currently the best drink I own and can be found in my liquor cabinet.
