Keep your skin looking youthful and radiant with The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid Serum 5% in Squalane, a water-free solution that combats multiple signs of ageing without the harsh side effects common with retinol. The serum nourishes the skin, diminishes hyperpigmentation and visibly reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This lightweight serum is formulated using Granactive Retinoid, an advanced retinoid active complex which improves the skin’s moisture balance and therefore maintains its elasticity. Squalane provides vast benefits to the skin, it has powerful anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory properties, and it also helps balance oil production. Apply a small amount to skin after cleansing and toning, preferably at night. Apply after water serums but before heavier treatments. Do not use other retinoid treatments when using this serum. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised not to use products containing retinoids. Retinoids make the skin more susceptible to UV damage and age spots, so you should apply sunscreen when using this serum. Water, alcohol, soy, nut, silicone, and cruelty-free. Vegan-friendly.

Beautiful formula! But 3 month expiry?

I love the nourishing texture of this formula which I find to be softening immediately. I prefer slightly heavier and oilier textures like this, because it takes the edge off any dryness, especially during the early days of use. It still absorbs very nicely when left to sit for 10/15 minutes. It doesn't smell of anything which is great. I only need 3-4 drops for my face, neck and chest.I find this is a higher potency than many others on the market. As a result it has started to even my acne discolouration marks within a month of use, which I did not find with any other retinol, so I'm super happy about this one! However, please can you advise me on how to get the most from my retinol before expiration? I just used this product for the first time after finishing my bottle of the granactive retinoid 2% in squalane. I washed my face with the squalane cleanser, a gel cleanser from La Roche Posay, and then used the ordinary hyaluronic acid 2% + B5 and niacinamide 10% + zinc serums, gave it a couple minutes between each to let them soak in. Then I applied my refrigerated granactive retinoid. It was entirely different than the 2% formulation. I immediately noticed it is significantly more watery, almost completely like water, did not have the same color as the 2% formulation, and also has a distinct rosemary smell. I don’t mind the last one but it does make me wonder why there are so many significant differences. As I applied I could tell it was doing something to my skin as I felt it creating this pilling type side product, either from the retinoid itself, my skin, or somehow one of the previous products. It was not at all pleasant to apply. I am now allowing it the time it needs to sit before I apply my moisturizer as I write this, but in terms of application and product consistency I am thoroughly unimpressed. I absolutely love my other products from The Ordinary, but this one seemingly needs some work.

Fantastic stuff for older skin
19 February 2023

I’m 49 and I’ve been using this for the past year, having moved up from the Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (which I’d used for a few years). A little definitely goes a long way and it took me a while to get used to the greasier squalane formula. I use this nightly after TO squalane cleanser and glycolic toner and my skin looks fantastic the following day. It definitely improves my lines and wrinkles and makes my face look naturally brighter. It has even given me the confidence to stop having botox, which I think says it all! For the price, the results are fantastic and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

It took about 2 weeks to adapt to about everyday use for me. If I used it too much I could feel the dryness settle in, but at this point I can use it almost every day, and I do because this product gives me such smooth, even skin. I've been using skincare products for about a year and have more or less tamed all my breakouts, and the retinol here has been great at reducing scarring and improving the speed at which I'm recovering from any breakouts. While redness is still fading after about 2 months of use, I have to say this product makes me wake up with a dreamy smooth face. The oil suspension used does leave my face a little shiny, but it absorbs after like 10 or or so minutes, and I think it feels very moisturizing. While onboarding it to my regime, I did notice very very slight drying, but find that I adapted quickly. (This was also my first retinol ever, so the granactive claim of being less irritating may be holding true, especially since this is the maximum strength granactive retinol offered.

I tried it for many months- way too oily!
24 June 2022

Originally I bought THE ORDINARY"S Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane along with Granative Retinoid 2% Emulsion. I figured I would use the 2% emulsion first to acclimate my skin and move up to the Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane, a stronger formula. This Emulsion formula is WONDERFUL, absorbs nicely and quickly, but is just not strong enough. After I finished the bottle (pleased with the results and wanting to step up) I moved on to this Squalane formula. Oh, how I hated this oily formula! It did a fine enough job- no irritation- but the oil took forever to absorb and was downright unpleasant to me. I'm not usually grumpy about textures, but I just could not stand the Squalane's oily feeling on my clean skin before bed. Please make a stronger version of the Emulsion- that would make me ever happier. Thanks!

This is definitely one of the few staples in my skin care regimen. I use it once a day, every night & it has done wonders for my skin. At first, you will most likely break out but just bare with it & don’t give up hope! It takes about 3 months to start seeing results, but coming from someone who has chronic acne & break outs with literally no other method of keep it even somewhat under control that has worked for me, this is certainly a game changer. Of course I do still get some break outs here & there, but since having this in my skin care routine I notice that they don’t last as long, they’re not as severe & it’s much easier to manage. I would highly recommend this product. For this, you really can’t beat the price for the quality. I will say, you have to be very disciplined in using this daily to see results; you cannot miss more than just a day or so. But try it out, give it some time, stick with it & see what happens!

I'm also a skin-picker and this product really speeds up the recovery in terms of dark spots that stay behind. Also, it doesn't break my out at all, which I struggled with when using some smaller percentages of retinol in squalane. Can't explain it.My only down side is the size of the bottle. I refrigerate it and use it quite often, but I'm not able to use the entire thing before it loses its potency. It sucks having to throw away almost half a bottle every time. Then, when I open a fresh bottle I see the diffrence in strength after the fist use. I've seen that a lot of people have brought up this concern and I agree. I think that you guys should for sure think about smaller packaging for sure.

If it doesn't smell, it's good, read the ingredients mumAnyway, she bought my first IL and it was, okay, didn't see much difference after 2 months. But I started to do my own research .. nearly 46, fine lines under the eyes, dry skin naturally, frown lines a little, lines around the mouth, that sort of thing, but I tried the IL and it really dried my nose and forehead.I came across the 5% ordinary, after reading about soooo many products on a Sunday evening.I purchased this and collected 2 days later.First thoughts were, I really like the dropper, less is more and no wastage ( when I squeeze a tube or bottle, too much Comes out ) and I didn't even need to ... MoreMy daughter got me in to the more ...." natural, less c**p anti wrinkle face stuff " she calls it. I've learnt to tap it in to my skin rather than rub, a little trick.I wake up with non dry skin, no peeling and I pop a little simple light moisturiser on and I'm good for the day.I've only been using 2 weeks, but I think I've found my calling card for my face. I've put moisturiser on my skin for 30 years, anything will do.But you get to an age where you need a little help. Conclusion - perfect for mature skin, skin over 30, excellent for dry skin, skin feels moisturised, no redness, no flakiness, only need a light moisturiser for the day, no irritation, easy to apply. This is for my skin which ISN'T sensitive, nearly 46 years old, normal to dry skin, loves a summer tan.I'm looking forward to seeing if it helps with a few sun spots and really targets my squint lines.I will be updating when it does. For this price, I think most of us at a certain age should be using it
