Troy Lee Designs A2 MIPS Helmet Decoy Blue
Troy Lee Designs A2 - Cooler and faster, but well protected! The groundbreaking A2 is the mountain bike trail helmet from Troy Lee Designs that meets all requirements and expectations. Its stylish shell not only has huge air intake and exhaust openings, but is also equipped with the very best impact protection. From special visor screws to the innovative MIPS brain protection system to the industry's first dual-density EPP + EPS liner that protects against both high- and low-speed impacts, this helmet doesn't take your safety lightly. With adjustable straps and an X-Static Pure Silver comfort liner, comfort rivals protection. A three-position adjustable retention system allows you to customize your fit. It can also accommodate the wearing of goggles. The antimicrobial, moisture-wicking material of the inner lining guarantees you a dry, comfortable feeling in the helmet even in hot weather. In addition, when it gets hot, the extra large inlet and outlet openings allow more air to flow through the helmet and cool the head noticeably. InMoldingInmolding refers to a technology used to optimize the weight, ventilation and stability of the helmet. The outer shell is bonded to the impact absorbing EPS material during the manufacturing process to form a single unit. MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System). The MIPS fall protection system is a low-friction layer under the helmet padding that reduces the rotational forces transmitted to the brain during an impact. This layer allows the head to move 10-15 mm relative to the helmet in all directions during a fall, redirecting energies and forces that would otherwise be transmitted to the brain. MIPS helmets are designed to protect the brain from an angled impact because angled falls create rotational forces that are transmitted to the brain and can lead to brain injury. MIPS can reduce both rotational motion and the risk of brain damage.

I have been using this helmet for a few weeks and I am very impressed with it. I am normally a less than $100 helmet buyer because they are such a one time use (impact) item but as I get older I feel that it is more important to invest in safety. A sticker pack is also included. The only thing I would change on this helmet is the clasp. Some helmets use the magnetic clasps and that has spoiled me. No lining up just put the clasps together and they lock. This helmet using old school pinch clasps.

Beautifully designed and really well made and burly, the A2 helmet is such a great fitting and great looking helmet. It's craftsmanship is second to none. I'm on my second one, due to a bad crash I took, that didn't even touch the helmet itself, but just the visor. I bought one in case they decided to get rid of this design, as despite being a little hot and not that great on ventilation, it's so sturdy and well built, that I was afraid on not being able to get another one. The only thing I'd have to hit it on is that sweat drips right into your eyes/glasses during hot weather.I tried the new A3 MIPS, which didn't quite fit right, due to the new dual sizing(eg. I didn't care for the new magnetic buckle on the new A3 though-I want to feel and audible lock....Overall though, I'll put up with the lack of a forehead sweat diverter, because I like the sizing and looks on the A2 much better. Great helmet and now the price came down as well, and they are giving you another spare helmet pad, just like the new A3 MIPS.

Back in 2013, Troy Lee Designs introduced their A1 helmet, which marked the companys return to making half shell bike helmets after a decade long hiatus. That helmet won over plenty of riders with its ultra-comfortable fit and extended coverage, but it was a little warmer than other helmets on the market. Thats where the brand new A2 comes in. Thanks to its wider vents and increased internal channeling, the A2 is claimed to offer 25% more air intake, which should come in handy on those hot summer days. Troy Lee did more than just carve out the vents on an A1 and call it good - the A2 uses a mix of EPP (expanded polypropylene) and EPS (expanded polystyrene) foams in order to allow it to handle high and low-speed impacts. Troy Lee did more than just carve out the vents on an A1 and call it good - the A2 uses a mix of EPP (expanded polypropylene) and EPS (expanded polystyrene) foams in order to allow it to handle high and low-speed impacts. Compared to the A1, the EPS at the front of the helmet is 16% thicker to provide even more protection to the frontal lobe area. In addition to the use of two foam densities, TLD also equip the A2 with a MIPS liner thats designed to help reduce the rotational forces that reach the brain. The A2s shape makes it possible to easily store sunglasses when theyre not in use, and theres also more room around the ears to prevent glasses frames from touching the helmets shell. The fit of the helmet is adjusted via a dial at the back of the helmet, and there are three different height settings for further fine tuning. Ive been able to get in a handful of rides so far with the A2, and although the mercury has been reluctant to climb above 50°F / 10°C (after all, its still February), the increased airflow with the A2 versus the A1 is noticeable, a feature that will undoubtedly be even more welcome when spring and summer arrive. The padding also seems to dry faster, another plus for those warm days. As far as fit goes, the A2 has a tough row to hoe when it comes to knocking the A1 of its perch as the king of comfort. So far Id say A1 keeps the crown, although the A2 isnt far off. My head shape is more oval than round, and the A2 seems to sit a little bit higher than the A1 does. Its very secure, and it never shifted out of place even on rough, bumpy trails, but it doesnt cradle my head quite as well as the A1. As with any helmet, its always best to try before you buy - fit will vary from rider to rider. On a similar note, I also found that the front portion of the helmets shell sticks out far enough that it slightly entered my field of vision, typically when climbing. Of course, this could also be related to my head shape, and might not be the case for all riders, but its something I didnt experience with the A1. Luckily, I havent put the A2s impact absorption capabilities to the test yet (knock on wood), but its good to see more companies incorporating features designed to deal with multiple impact speeds. I need some more time (and some warmer weather) to fully evaluate the A2, but by all appearances it upholds the blend of style and safety that Troy Lee Designs helmets are known for. When measuring my head it is perfectly borderline between large and extra large. I've had other very comfortable helmets in the past this is not one of them. I've owned two different sizes of this helmet . My issue with the helmet is that it does not fit my head properly. The medium is too tight around the rear "corners "of my head. The next size up is way too loose and I have to tighten it too much and it smashes my forehead into the front of the helmet and even rips the pads apart there. And the tightening mechanism eventually fails even though I never put lights on a helmet.
I had previously tried Fox speedframe, but it was just a smidge narrow on the sides, felt like someone was squeezing my head with their hands. Turns out, fox tends to cater towards those with narrower heads, and being on the upper end of a size medium, there just wasn't enough width even though my head circumference was well within the range for medium. Now onto TLD A2, it's exactly what I needed. The med/large was perfect for my slightly rounder oval head measuring 58cm. It looks really good on, color is amazing, just took my first ride with it and forgot I had a helmet on the entire time. Highly recommend!
I have a smaller head and wear my hair in a ponytail, this helmet fits my my head great and there is room for a ponytail - I like the vents and how lightweight it feels. Also, I have to give a shout out to Evo customer service! I was not sure what size to get and was a bit confused about the sizing on this particular helmet, the representative was so helpful, did research for me and even followed up with me the next day. I would recommend this helmet and the customer service!
I am glad I am able to still get the A2. Everybody’s head is different so people will just have to try different helmet brands until they find one that is the most comfortable. This one happens to be it for me. Love this blue color and the airflow is great. Bought this to replace my last A2 helmet that got damaged in a crash. The helmet got dented and the visor shattered and I can say I didn’t feel the impact at all on my head. Always wear a helmet!!
This helmet arrived quickly (within just a few days). It’s very nice looking. I chose it because it was on a list of safe helmets and for the MIPS technology. I also wanted the bright color for visibility. It was packaged in a pleasant way to protect the helmet. I have a big head but not a huge head and the xl/2xl fits. It can also be tightened too big or too small for my head. The visor came attached to the helmet. The buckle is fine, just a normal buckle. I really like how the helmet looks- smooth. Now I need a warm day to try it out!
Great helmet, secure and comfortable fitting/cradle system. Never expected it to be light, but feels(felt) only slightly heavier than my road helmet. Served me great for 9 months, why only 9 months you ask? Well on 6/7/23 I carried too much speed through a corner and missed a transition, sailing off a drop in to a steep downhill. Landed 12' below stuffing front wheel launching off bike. Landed on back/neck/head, will be off the bike for a week or so. After waking up from an unplanned nap, I made it out of park and slowly made my way home. Happy to be able to order a replacement.
