Unlike other instruments, drums have no set tuning like a piano or guitar. With tune bot I am able to overcome the challenges of tuning them. Getting an instrument to sound right is almost harder than learning to play it. Line 6 did this in the guitar realm, and Tune Bot did this with drums. I've been looking for something like this for as long as i can remember. Tuning is now easy, where it was a crapshoot before. I DEFINITELY recommend this product!

Put new head on , tighten finger tight , use key to remove wrinkles as you push down in the center of head, tap near lug find or adjust to the sound you like, clip on tuner , tap the near the lug you like the sound , see what the tuner is displaying , you might have to raise the tension up or down to get that one lug near 000 or .005 anywhere near that , then press the top button and tap near that lug you adjusted and it will display the reading , now press that large button one more time to log it in , now go around and tighten or loosen the other lugs to get each one near the original logged in display. I've been tuning by ear for 35 years and can tune pretty much any drum by lug feel, but this thing has opened new areas for me. Not only does it eliminate overtones (I can't hear the -.15 or +1.5 hz tone differences) it also gives you a reference number for quickly changing heads and getting exactly the sound and, more importantly, the feel of how you spent hours tuning the previous set. Their website has various artist readings too that you can try if you know a particular drummers sound and want to recreate it.
DIRTY LITTLE SECRET about Tune-bot - there are free aps for your smartphone that do everything this device does. And they probably have better filtering. OK maybe they won't clip onto your hoop.... Anyway I sold my Tune-bot used.Here's the biggest problem with the Gig -- it doesn't have a good "filter" mechanism like the regular Tune-bot does, which makes it almost unusable on snare drum reso heads that make a lot of overtones. Plus I found it had a hard time registering light taps, forcing you to really hit it, which you don't want to do with snare reso heads.All in all, there is no good reason to pay the money for this device. Lots of good chromatic tuning aps out there for your phone.
It seems to work pretty well - can be a bit picky about tuning across the drum, but I just move it and then it's fine. Results are consistent, and the dial matches what I'm hearing.Build quality seems decent enough, I'm not overly keen on the body being plastic, but it's not a big deal. The screen is bright and clear, the clip seems to work well enough. The little tub it comes in is a nice touch.Overall, seems like a solid purchase. I've been tuning by ear for 15 years, this gets me the same results but faster - as an engineer, that makes it worth the cost, but for most drummers it's probably a bit pricey. To be fair though, Tension Watches are about the same, and I've always found them to be way less consistent/picky.
The gizmo is simple to use ...particularly in conjunction with the tuning tables on the TuneBot website. Although its simple to use the actual process is very fidly and time consuming. I did eventualy manage to tune one set of 4 toms to one of the suggested tuning sets. But didnt really fall in love with the resulting sound to be honest, so going to try one of the other suggestions at some point before i gig with the drums. However, so far its been useless with my snare drum.. widely erratic readings..caused presumable by too many overtones that the automatic filter is supposed to ignore. Ive been told that these can be surpressed either by lightly touching the centre if the head with a finger or using a moongel pad in centre.. so ive ordered some gel pads to give ... Ive not even bothered to try tuning the kick drum yet...i bet that will be as bad as the snare. Although its called TuneBot "gig" .. it would be impractical to use this to tune your drums on stage... it would be too noisey to work , yet alone stressful because of the time it takes. You need to do it on your own, in a quiet environment when you have a few hours to spare. im not sure i think its good value or not. The free website tuning guide is very useful..and there are free tuning apps you can use tocheck the note and frequency. Wish id tried that out first before paying a lot of money for this.

While this unit is a useful tool, that's all it is. you still have to understand the relationship between the different sized drums in your kit and the sound or steps you want to hear between them...there is no standard tuning for drums and it seems as though everyone does it differently. there is an app that you can get for this tuner and when I punched in the size drums in my kit and tuned to the specifications listed, it sounded terrible.
