I am an espresso hobbyist. I purchased the Varia as I have 2 scales one around $35 and the other $50. Neither work well. They flake out during a pull or lose their settings. I was hoping the Varia would save the day without spending over $200 for an AçaÃ. I was very disappointed in what it can do and performance. It does not have automatic timer when coffee starts dripping. I should have looked closer at the specs. And it does the same thing as the cheaper scales as it will flake out during a pull. Starts out ok then the extraction weight will ramp up and down. At that point you have no idea of the weight until you stop. I cannot recommend this product.

I can’t believe how sturdy this Scale feels and beautiful it looks! I’ve been using Amazon $10 jewellery scales for 4 years and this is my first proper scale. And wow! Do yourself a favour and grab one!

Exactly what I was after in a scale! I wanted something compact (to sit comfortably on the Breville Bambino Plus drip tray), accurate and budget friendly. I love that it came with a carry case, handy for travel or camping. It matches my Varia VS3 Grinder and current coffee station setup nicely. I'd also like to thank Alternative Brewing for their awesome customer service - as the first scale that was delivered had a factory defect, the team quickly rectified the problem and sent through a replacement.
Love these scales!!! They're beautiful, the perfect size and quiet robust especially for any busy cafe - it'sconstantly being moved around depending on the preferance of the barista.It has an amazing battery life! And Super fast. We love the automatic tare feature is a big winExcellent price point! And even comes with a beautiful hard case.
Worked well for the first 2wks, but now the power button on top is unresponsive. Its been charged once a week since I received (3wks ago) and it doesn't matter if my hands are dry/cold or warm/wet. If I switch the power button on the back off and back on again in it will work, but the second I touch the button to turn it off it won't turn back on. Regretting taking a chance on a Varia and should have saved my money for a Acaia.
I love the built quality and bright display. The travel case and calibration weight are a really nice touch. The only thing I would change for my espresso making preference would be to add a mode that self tares and starts the timer when it detects flow.My previous scales were the Brewista II. I found the functionally of those slightly better but the built quality was not as good. I’ve had the brewista scales twice before. Both times they did not last more than 2 years. I’m hoping the Varia scales will.
Out of the box the electronics in this scale have been weird. The scale turns on at random times. It changes modes from manual to automatic tare without any help from me. Most aggravating is customer support. They have not given me any. After a week I understand what their strategy is. They will wear me down with requests for pictures until I go away. They win, I am going away. I am going to buy an Acaia. More expensive but hopefully will not lead to requests for customer support.
I like the build quality and aesthetic of this scale, however my unit seems to suffer from scale drift. I normally tare my dosing cup, weigh beans, dose, and reweigh. If for some reason I waited a minute or two while the dosing cup isn't on the scale, it would drift a gram or two. For the price I would expect it to not have this issue. Otherwise works well.
Looks great and compact! came with a nice case for travel.And not to mention a few other useful settings other than auto tare and timer.
