Tried this on 3 different computers - same results. Used DVD+R/DL disks. Each one coastered badly enough to lock up the software burning them. I tried ImgBurn & Express Burn - same results. In one case, I had to do a hard shutdown of the computer just to correct the issue. Each computer had a different OS as well - XP sp3 (product not specifically rated for this one, so I won't hold it against the manufacturer), Win 8.1 and Win 10. All in all, a 100% failure rate on writing disks with this one. The only positive thing I can say about this drive is that it's physically better built and feels more robust than some others (like the LG). No doubt there's someone out there with the right combination of computer, OS and software to make this one work, just not me. Caveat ... MoreTried this on 3 different computers - same results. A nice slimline external cd/dvd recorder. This product runs without an external power supply - it just needs to be plugged in to a USB socket, preferably a rear socket on a desktop computer, as the voltage supply is better than front USB sockets. The unit comes with a plugin lead that has USB-c plug one end for the drive and USB-a for the PC end. The lead is quite short though (about 45cm) but an extension lead can be purchased separately if the lead is not long enough. The drive is quite quiet when running and seems to record/playback efficiently.

No instructions were included with the device. Verbatim website was deemed unsafe, therefore, unable to access. YouTube videos only provided information on how to open the package that the device was in. Incompatible with 1-2 year old laptop (purchased) at Staples with Windows 11 operating system. Very disappointed with the the device. It was returned to the local Staples for refund.

I brought this as an alternative option to use with my current windows 11 laptop that has no cd/dvd drive instead of keeping my old windows 7 computer.Pleased to say, it works perfectly, was quick and easy to install and the installation cd that came with it was very helpful as even though I'd connected the drive via usb installation didn't automatically start.I recommend this product.
I connected it to my Acer Nitro V Laptop running Windows 11 Home. It showed up straight away. Included with the DVD Writer was a setup for a lot of Nero burning software. However it is possible to use Windows burning software included in the OS just right click in File Explorer for the options. In the Microsoft store can be found free software ( some Nero ) to help do what you require. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT YOU MUST BE THE OWNER OF YOUR CD OR DVD AND WILL BE USING THE SOFTWARE FOR PRIVATE USE - VERY IMPORTANT.
The drive is a bit flimsy. One need know to properly close its door. (two thumbs on either side delivering a single fast movement, a synchronic snap.I bought a gaming computer, but it had no external drive. Unfortunately, the new computer, a LENOVO Legion, does not recognize the older discs. I figure there is a capability of reading WINDOWS 7 AND 8 dics, but haven't found it....therefore, the new external drive has yet to help play the older discs....i respect the VERBATIM's External drive for being lightweight, simple, seemingly flimsy, easily breakable. However, one needs know how to use this device with appropriate care.
I bought it about a month ago, knowing I will need it because the newer laptops are not equipped with CD or DVD drives anymore. Well I hooked it up, and inserted the CD. It flashed a box on the screen to select the CD drive and the box went away before I could select it. Three tries and got it before the box disappeared. Opened the files and tried the install file, nothing. Tried again and same thing. Then a box showed up that said it can't install on this PC.Went back to square one, starting over and it was more problematic than before, but I finally got there. Then couldn't find the box that said it can't install on this PC. I did find a screen that showed it will work on Win XP, through Win 8.1 (all the in between even Win 95). Needed a secondary DVD burner to batch burn 20 DVDs. Purchased the $40 Verbatim drive along with printable 8x dvd verbatim media.Using Older Toast 10 software to burn iDVD img file. Software recognizes new DVD-R drive.Burning two drives at the same time using two apps. One drive is old 2006 Sony tray DVD burner that cost over $400 back then.Second drive is new Verbatim laptop type tray DVD burner that cost $40.Both are USB 2 drives.Surprisingly my old Sony drive peaks at 7x write speeds avg 3x while new Verbatim drive peaks at 5x avg 2x write speeds.I don't think it's a USB buss issue. I suppose the electronics and buffers are less in the newer drive. Maybe using Windows it might optimize performance better. Didn't try Apple's Disk Utility either. But hey what do you expect for $40 so I'm content with slightly slower speeds. As long as you are gentle with the plastic drive and place it on flat surface it will work fine. DVDs snap sinto drive spindle so it's not as easy as the old tray load drive where you just drop it and close tray.Having it on flat surface allows you to press the disc into the spindle tray. Close it by pressing door closed and other fingers on back of the drive to lock. My software automatically opens the door for next disc.If it holds up well I might get a few more to burn several dvds at once.Gets power from USB bus so no extra cables or power like my old drive enclosure.
It runs, and that's about it.The CD to install Nero that came with the unit doesn't work on my Windows10 laptop, so I had to rip tracks with WMP. Fine, I can deal with that. But why send a buggy CD that took up 2 hours of my time? The construction is very lightweight, fragile feeling, and the quality of plastic is such that it buckles even with the pressure of putting a CD in. So handle with caution.Pushing the tray in has to be done carefully. Too much force will definitely damage something, given the lightweight build. But, it ripped my CDs so far, and by the end of about 200 or so CDs, I wont have much more use for it. Hopefully it will get to that number and still work.Anyone looking for a durable, sleek, touch-responsive CD drive should definitely look ... MoreIt runs, and that's about it.The CD to install Nero that came with the unit doesn't work on my Windows10 laptop, so I had to rip tracks with WMP. I do embroidery a lot and my designs would not download from the disc to the flash drive. Most of the time it would not work. I took my computer in to someone else other the Staples and that person really screwed up my computer. So after looking into purchasing a new laptop computer which I truly did not want to do I saw a commercial that Staples does computer repair. I asked around and everyone I talked with said that Staples is the best. So I took my computer in and 4 days later I had a call and text that my computer was up and running. I went in and the man told me what was wrong and suggested the external DVD Burner and it was so much better in price then a new computer. Thank you Staples and everyone that told me about them.
