This lens performs very well, even below f/1.7. Chromatic aberration is not negligible full open, but that is of course easily correctable (if you care more about CA than speed, check out the 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar of course). It renders a rather dreamy image at f/1.2 but stopped down to something actually sane gets great results thanks to the aspherical design. This is prime portrait glass material, the rendering is reminiscent of my favorite Nikkors but with vastly smoother and more modern ergonomics (though I do miss heptagonal/hexagonal bokeh!). My only complaint about the 40mm & 50mm Noktons is that they are a little chunky for me in the hand, compared to the 35mm f/2 APO-Lanthar, but that I assume is simply the price of speed. They're all quite a bit smaller than the 65mm APO-Lanthar and a lot of modern fast lenses, so it's barely a complaint. My primary use case is for interior fixed-angle video for multi-cam recording. Having this kind of speed when you need it can absolutely save a dark or poorly lit shot in terms of cutting back ISO when you have no other options! Some example shots straight out the camera (no correction) below, f/1.2 to f/1.6.

My Leica 50mm f/2.0 Summicron was purchased new decades ago, and it's produced some great sharp images over the years. However, a faster 50 has always intrigued me and I've been very pleased with other Voigtlander lenses in my collection and so I purchased their f/1.1 but was greatly disappointed in its image quality, even stopped down considerably, and so I sold it. I've read great things about its slightly smaller successor and so took the plunge again. As soon as it arrived I did a comparison test between my Summicron and this new Nokton, using my standard test subject (stuffed animal on a bookshelf flanked by books with titles showing on bindings) and a well-grounded tripod. Starting at the same f/2.0 aperture, I was shocked that the Nokton's central sharpness was actually a tad better with better contrast. Edge sharpness was very good, even at f/2.0. I then cranked it fully open to f/1.2 and was amazed that the central sharpness was still there and the edges were quite good as well. When the aperture was gradually closed down to f/22 there was absolutely no focus shift along the way and image quality actually improved a bit to f/8-11. Voigtlander has gotten it right this time. As usual for Voigtlander, its nearly all-metal construction is top notch, and the aperture stops are positive and the focusing ring broad and scalloped and operates smoothly. As should be obvious by now, I couldn't be happier with the quality of construction and performance of this lens. This one is definitely a keeper.

Ive been looking for a 50mm wide aperture lens for my Leica bodies. I had settled on a used Summilux 50mm but when Voigtlander announced their new 50mm f1.2 ASPH I decided to research that lens. Reviews were very good and the performance wide open was excellent. At f1.2 its a half stop faster than the Summilux at half the price of a used one. After using it for a month I find the lens outstanding. I mostly use Leica glass but this lens stays on a Leica body always. Very sharp, minimal vignetting wide open (use the f 1.2 Noctilux profile), no barrel distortion, and have not detected any color fringing so far. Beautiful Bokeh with a pleasing background. I cant say enough good things about this fantastic lens.

The image quality of this lens is outstanding, especially when stopped down a little. In fact, when stopped down the sharpness is like a reproduction lens. CA, flare and vignetting are well controlled. The build is just exquisite, as with most Voigtlander lenses. The perfect combination of durability and elegance. There are only two reasons why I don't rate this a five. First, the minimum focusing distance is too far. It is at 2-4 times farther than any other 50mm I have used. And second is having to purchase a lens hood seperately. Seriously Voigtlander, including a lens hood is standard practice. Especially when you are paying this much for a lens.
Quite many of lenses which I bought in recent years had to be returned due to optical quality issues, sometimes very serious. Based on these bad experiences, I have started testing my lenses just after purchase.I have tested my Voigtlander 50mm F1.2 for resolution at various apertures and focal distances. I have also made tests for decentering and coma and found no problems at all. This is not a perfect lens, many reviews I read before agree with that. But comparing it to my old Minolta AF 50mm F1.4 it wins in all fields, except for size and weight of course. Resolution across the frame seems to be only very slightly better than Minolta's resolution, perhaps better sensor than 42Mpix will be able to show Voigtlander advantage more clearly. Resolution across the frame seems to be only very slightly better than Minolta's resolution, perhaps better sensor than 42Mpix will be able to show Voigtlander advantage more clearly. Clarity of the picture, contrast, coma, geometrical distortion and of course bokeh is better in case of Voigtlander. Since corners sharpen up very nicely at F8, the lens is quite suitable for landscape photography, however this was not the reason why I bought it, I am more interested in exploring it's wide open possibilities. The only thing that I don't like is the lens cap, the way in which it is attached to the front of the lens doesn't build much confidence, but this is a very minor issue.
Great lens at a fair price. Outstanding Japanese optics for a fraction of what a Leica will cost you. This 50mm is a smart choice for Leica rangefinder cameras. It's sharp and it pairs well with the M10's 24-megapixel sensor. My rangefinder calibration was spot-on with this Voigtlander.
I recently decided to go back to using a digital Leica (M-262) as my primary camera. I was able to afford the purchase by selling my FujiFilm digital kit. To be honest, my cameras were several years old and getting a little long in the tooth. I figured I should sell them before they were worth pennies. I still own a Leica M6 35mm film camera and the most amazing FujiFilm X-100F digital camera. I already own two Leica lenses, a 1970 50mm f2 Summicron and a 90mm 2.4 Summarit. I felt the need for a faster lens. I already owned the Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 Nokton Classic which has great image and build quality so I eagerly awaited the release of the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm 1.2. This lens was anticipated to be an amazing alternative to the very expensive Leica 50mm lenses.I purchased my lens from B&H Photo in New York. I have always had good luck purchasing from them as they are very trustworthy and reputable. My Lens arrived new and amazingly well constructed as I expected. I do wish the lens came with the matching hood and maybe a dust pouch or bag. It just came in standard protective box and packaging (yawn). I think they are missing the mark by not adding some updated presentation packaging.I have found the lens to be very sharp and has a very nice Bokeh. Any lack of sharpness has been caused by being out of practice with the manual focus rangefinder, my eyes starting to age, astigmatism in my dominant eye and my now use of the dreaded spectacles.I am amazed at the image quality and construction of the Voigtlander. I have owned many 50mm lenses from different manufacturers to include the Canon 50mm L 1.2 and I have to say that this little guy (Voigtlander) takes the cake. It has amazing character to it.Vinny The Lenswww.Vinnythelens.com
Usually any lens faster than f/1.4 is considered a “super speed” lens. Super speed lenses are known for being difficult to use, finicky, bulky, heavy, and not necessarily being all that sharp. They also are known for being more susceptible to flare than their less exotic f/1.4 and f/2 cousins, not to mention extremely expensive. This Voigtlander is a super speed lens that suffers from none of those usual downsides. It is fairly compact, not excessively heavy, but most unexpectedly it is very well-behaved in almost all situations. The lens is very resistant to flare. It has very low distortion, is very sharp, does not suffer from focus shift and generally is just as easy to use as a less exotic lens. For those expecting a budget Noctilux, this isn’t it. Actually it has a look very much like the Leica Summilux ASPH, which is a very good thing, and then it can open up an additional half stop. It isn’t quite as well corrected as the Summilux (that lens is apochromatic and this one isn’t), but it is very, very close, not to mention it has the exact same weight.I’ve had this for about two weeks now and so far am very impressed.
I previously owned the Voigtlander 50mm f1.1 lens. The biggest complaint I had with the 1.1 version was that the bokeh could look very busy and unpleasant depending on the background. This new 1.2 lens is 1000 times better in regards to bokeh. It is very smooth regardless of the background. I sold the 1.1 version after about a year due to not using much because I didn't like the characteristics of the lens wide open. And when buying a fast lens, which to me is anything faster than f2, you expect that the bokeh will be pleasing. Otherwise, why bother? I've used the new 1.2 on both a film Leica M6 TTL and a Sony A7S. The reason I gave only 4 stars instead of five is due to the handling on the Leica M body, which is what the lens is designed for. Due to the large diameter of the lens, the ergonomics on a Leica M body are not as nice as I would like. However on the Sony A7S body, the handling feels better than on the M. I think it is due to better weight balance and grip.
I love 50mm lenses and currently own seven of them just for my Leica (a few more for other platforms). Ive shot with everything from a humble Soviet Industar 26 that cost about the same as a Happy Meal to Leicas all-Singing 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux that costs about the same as a good used car, and just about everything in between.Ill get it right out of the way, this Voigtlander is no budget Noctilux. It is an entirely different animal, meant more as a general purpose fast 50mm lens that can be used everyday for just about every subject. If you only plan to own one 50mm lens for your Leica (film or digital) you could do a lot worse than this one.In fact, the lens that I believe this comes closest to in rendering style is Leicas 50mm f/1.4 Summilux ASPH, which is a ... It is an entirely different animal, meant more as a general purpose fast 50mm lens that can be used everyday for just about every subject. If you only plan to own one 50mm lens for your Leica (film or digital) you could do a lot worse than this one.In fact, the lens that I believe this comes closest to in rendering style is Leicas 50mm f/1.4 Summilux ASPH, which is a bit thinner, a bit longer, the exact same weight and just under four times the price. The Leica lens is a little bit better at most distances and apertures, but not likely enough to notice anywhere except on a test bench.Of course, the Leica Summilux wont open up to f/1.2, and that might make all the difference in low light. My Leica M-D (Typ 262) camera can give clean files up to ISO 3200 if I dont underexpose (no latitude for error at that ISO level or banding will set in). Imagine taking a portrait by the light of two candles and it is not uncommon to have a shutter speed of 1/30th of a second at f/1.4, which is entirely possible to shoot handheld with good technique, but which is a lot easier at 1/45th of a second at f/1.2. Now cut the amount of light in half either by putting out one of those candles or moving them away from the subject and that Summilux will give you a shutter speed of only 1/15th of a second. Some people can handhold a Leica at that. speed, many cant, while 1/22nd of a second will drastically increase the hit rate. Then there is depth of field and bokeh. An f/1.4 lens can give terrific bokeh and very shallow depth of field for extreme subject isolation, but an f/1.2 lens can take both effects a step further. Will a picture that was nice at f/1.2 be ruined at f/1.4? Of course not, but it is a real difference nonetheless. The Noctilux is a magic lens that renders light in a unique way that this lens will not duplicate, but then, neither will anything else. This lens will, however, give as sharp, as smooth, and beautifully rendered an image as just about anything else though and in my opinion other than price renders Voigtlanders older 50mm f/1.1 and 50mm f/1.5 Nokton lenses obsolete (though the 50/1.1 has a unique, classic rendering that is different).I currently think that this is the Best Buy 50mm M mount lens available today. I will have to think seriously about whether or not to keep my Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron as this lens appears equally sharp, is far faster and isnt that much heavier. I just dont see any downsides with this.

Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens For Sony E
The NOKTON 50mm F1.2 Aspherical E-mount is a high-speed manual focus lens optimized for the full frame imaging sensors of Sony mirrorless cameras. 50mm F1.2 standard lens could be called a special lens for photo enthusiasts. During the middle to late 20th century, when the maximum aperture of fast standard lenses was generally F2 or F1.4, a 50mm lens with F1.2 aperture was favored by professional photographers as a special fast lens. Because of this, even today many photo enthusiasts are still captured by the tradition and charm of this lens. The NOKTON 50mm F1.2 Aspherical E-mount is a newly designed standard lens with today’s technology for specifications that bring out the best in a high-speed standard lens. By using two out of eight elements, each with two aspherical surfaces, it realizes a compact size while having a large aperture. With this lens, you can enjoy comfortable handling well-balanced with camera body and gentle, ample bokeh. This lens is a manual focus and manual aperture design, but also features electrical contacts that enable the lens settings at image capture to be included in the Exif information of the image data. Furthermore, the lens is installed with a distance encoder to enable support for 5-axis image stabilization on bodies with this feature, by providing distance to subject information used to compensate for camera shake. The aperture ring has click stops in 1/3 steps. The lens also features a click stop switching mechanism that enables the click stops to be turned off when shooting video.
