Elemnt Roam - Verson 2 is worth the upgrade

Raised buttons on the front of the unit7. Easier to push buttons on the entire unit8. Came with an out front mount and handlebar mountCons:1. Generally good but a couple of annoying things for me.Firstly the protruding buttons - much prefer the sunken type of previous Elemnt.Accidentally ended my ride yesterday when the buttons got pressed in my phone case at a cafe stop.Secondly the mount doesn't sit square on the bars. Also the rear cable connection makes it impossible to charge while riding. Not a huge thing as the battery life is amazing.Love the colour screen and the re-route function in mapping.Had problems with losing/reconnecting to HRM when it goes out of range.

Great unit has a few issues
28 October 2022

I do really love this new Roam. Had just bought the old model less than 30-days before this was released. I even checked to see if there was any news on a new device coming out, nothing. Thankful on the timing or I would not have been happy. My two gripes:The mount is subpar. Compared to the top competitor’s similar mount, which seems like the same design but it’s not, there’s no secure click when mounting the unit to even the supplied out front mount. And it only can go in one way and turn one way? Silly, maybe there’s a patent they would be infringing on? Idk.Second gripe is there is no place to attach a fastener cable. Great, but can’t read the map
5 November 2022

I bought my V2 Roam and Kickr V6 together. The Roam is a great computer, with phone setup that works very well. I’ve used and like the climb function as I live in the mountains. So highly recommended.I can’t interpret the map screen. It gives me some chevrons and black lines all jammed together. What bothers me more is how much of the screen is dedicated to messages and metrics. I need my iPhone to make any navigation decisions. Not recommended if you want to navigate just with your head unit.I waited to buy the Roam and Kickr together anticipating a winter of indoor riding. I have a big trip planned, and want to be sure I’m fit enough. So I planned to load the route to the Roam and ride the profile on the Kickr. I bought the newly updated
13 November 2022

I bought the newly updated Roam after using the original version for about 2 years. The new version is a great update over the last one! The main thing I notice is that everything happens faster; faster to switch screens, faster to choose menu items. The interface is more colorful and it seems a bit easier to read. I have never run out of battery. The companion mobile app on my Android phone is still great. I like being able to choose routes and look up historical ride data on my phone's higher resolution screen.

28 January 2023

I liked the original Roam, but it has a couple of boggles that really annoyed me. The concave buttons were harder to use with gloves and attracted dirt, especially on gravel rides. The side buttons also needed a very firm press to engage. The V2 has sorted all the niggles I had. The new concave buttons are a doddle to use, even in thick winter gloves. They have a positive click too so no double pressing trying to get them to react. The side button for the main menu is also easier to use.The added colours for workouts and mapping is nice, although not essential. I do prefer the new black colour more than the old grey finish too, looks more expensive.Battery life remains excellent. This is my third wahoo gps computer and I won’t go back to Garmin. Not a SYSTM Solution
8 March 2023

I was a Sufferfest user for many years, running the app on an old MacBook Air with an ANT+ antenna and Airplay to the home theater in my pain cave. The SYSTM migration wouldn't run on that MacBook so I ended my subscription.Eventually I got a hankering for more suffering, so I asked Wahoo for a solution. The support rep suggested I just get a ROAM so I wouldn't need the MacBook/ANT+ antenna anymore. I bought the bundle hoping to start using SYSTM on my iPhone. That really didn't work out. SYSTM runs on my iPhone with Bluetooth connection to the bundled Wahoo sensors, but it is not aware of my Garmin Vector pedals. That means that I don't see current power on my SYSTM screen. Further the SYSTM iPhone app doesn't have Airplay integrated. If I Airplay from iOS, I only see the video and none of the ride metrics. The same workout also runs on the ROAM with an ANT+ connection. Checking my current power there works, but I don't see the current power vs target power experience I used to have in Sufferfest. Further, it puts me in a situation where I have to decide whether I'm going to record the workout on the SYSTM app or my ROAM. In addition, the SYSTM calendar is redundant to my TrainingPeaks calendar. I'm really not clear which one I am supposed to use.I made the decision to just build structured workouts on TrainingPeaks and record them on my ROAM while I watch old cycling races on my Roku. Once again I'm making the decision to ditch SYSTM. I'm a software product manager in the Internet of Things business so I was able to figure it out, but I'll guess most consumers would be confused and frustrated at this point. In my opinion Wahoo ruined Sufferfest when they acquired it and tried to chase Peloton. That's a tragedy. They should have just left it as it was.One other point on the ROAM. It has a vertical LED indicator that indicates current power. It has a horizontal LED indicator that I expected would indicate pace or heart rate for indoor sessions. It does not. The horizontal LED only indicates driving directions, which is pretty worthless in the pain cave. Also, the speed sensor does not appear to be calibrated at all and there were no calibration instructions in the quick start guide. It's recording my speed a 9mph when my outdoor average at comparable power is 15mph. I'm guessing that it will calibrate when I use the ROAM outdoors with GPS enabled. We'll see.

Upgrade Review
26 October 2022

While I give the new version of the Roam 5 stars as we’ve been waiting for these updates, there’s still slight room for improvement. Of course love the color coding and the mapping is even better as I was able to follow my race course without confusion. with respect to the color backgrounds, why use white font against a gray background? Can barely read the value in the field so interested to understand if that’s the only option. The other is the altimeter accuracy. I road Big Sugar last weekend and I ended up with 8800’ of climbing and roughly the same in descents. However the GPS course assigned to the event has 6200 listed.

Wahoo, the Apple of bike computers !
24 April 2023

To me the Wahoo Elemnt Roam is the best bike computer on the market : efficient and powerful, minimalist, can't be easier to use, and beautiful; exactly like an Apple product ! From my point of vue, Wahoo is the Apple of the bike computers !The fact the computer has buttons and not a touchscreen is great : no finger marks on the screen, and the few buttons are 100% enough to do everything you need while riding on the bike. The screen is so clear, and even more under full sunlight ! To me it's as clear as looking at a piece of paper under the sunlight. The connectivity of the computer makes it super easy and quick to import routes and to export rides records. The Wahoo Companion App makes the use (setup mostly) of the computer super easy thanks to the smartphone. It is great to be able to choose the location of each data on the data pages (you can create a lot of data pages); and to be able to zoom and dezoom in it during the ride thanks to two super usefull 2 buttons is perfect.Summit Segments is perfect, the fact we can't also customize this page with any data is great !A small detail i think Wahoo should consider (not directly about the computer) : the Wahoo mount sold with the bike computer is made for the computer to do one with its mount, so it's more aerodynamic and mostly has a better look; also, we can put a screw into the mount which makes we can't demount the computer and it's safe from falling on the ground. So, this Wahoo mount is great !There are two versions of this mount : one for the rounds handlebars (in the box with the computer) and one for the aero handlebars which are the same piece that the stem. The issue is that the bikes which doesn't have any of these two types of handlebars can't have a Wahoo mount. Indeed, they are some bikes which have an aero handlebar with a stem, so it's impossible to put correctly a Wahoo mount on these bikes because the handlebar isn't perfectly round beside the stem (it starts getting flat really close to the stem so the mount is not perfectly attached and glides) and there is a stem so we can't screw the mount for aero handlebars (there is no possibility to screw anything under the stem as we could on an aero combo). This is of course a minority of people facing this issue cause the majority of bikes have a round handlebar or an aero combo, but this can be frustrating for this minority who can't enjoy the computer with it's great Wahoo mount.I add that the solution to this issue for the bikes like mine which are not compatible with any of the two versions of the Wahoo mount is to buy a mount which we screw with the screw of the stem, it's perfect because it's solid like rock and can't glide, and look is perfect. But it's not a Wahoo mount so we don't have the two good points of it that i mentionned higher. So the perfection would be Wahoo to sell too a mount we screw with the stem screws, so that every single kind of road bike could support a Wahoo mount, but i really understand if for economic reasons it's not possible. The Wahoo Elemnt Roam (and bolt too i gess but in smaller !) is just perfect, so please keep going like that Wahoo !The sensors are great too.If you struggle choosing between a Wahoo bike computer and another one, i advice you to stop thinking and go for Wahoo, that's definitely the best !
