Warm Audio WA73-EQ Single Channel British Style Mic Preamp
Professional engineers have relied on '73-style preamps to shape the sound of countless pop and rock records, and the Warm Audio WA73-EQ delivers that legendary British tone with meticulous attention to authentic vintage design. This single-channel Class A microphone preamp with EQ represents years of careful reverse-engineering and countless hours of auditioning to recreate the sweet character and unique sonic signature that made the original units so coveted in studios worldwide. The WA73-EQ features genuine UK-made Carnhill transformers, faithfully reproducing the early versions that engineers prize for their fluid, forgiving nature and beautiful saturation characteristics. Warm Audio has maintained circuit integrity by using tantalum and polystyrene capacitors in the signal path, along with carefully selected output transistors that provide smoother performance at high gain settings. The complex dual concentric EQ switches are manufactured by Blore Edwards in the UK to military specifications, ensuring reliability and precision. With 80dB of gain through a fully discrete, hand-wired signal path, this preamp excels with all microphone types across vocals, instruments, and full mixes. The comprehensive 3-band inductor-based EQ offers extensive frequency control, including additional high-band points beyond the vintage 1073 design. A 4-position high-pass filter, tone button for transformer impedance switching, and multiple input/output options make the WA73-EQ equally suited to studio recording and live applications.

I recently purchased the warm audio wa73 eq with no high expectations of any sort. I’ve been using a solo 610 tube preamp as my main mic pre so in my opinion it was going to be tough for any other character preamp to impress me. So I thought lol. The Warm Wa73 is definitely my new “desert island” mic preamp. The Warm Wa73 is so good that I almost sold the solo 610! And I’m not even referring the eq section of the preamp, I’m basing this solely on the preamp section. The fact that it has an EQ just makes it that much more appealing. This mic pre is amazing! It is definitely not a “one trick pony”. The reason why the warm audio unit impressed me so much was because of its versatility. This mic pre is amazing! It is definitely not a “one trick pony”. The reason why the warm audio unit impressed me so much was because of its versatility. On its own, it sounds very smooth. To put it clearly, it has that “expensive”/“finished” sound that we have all heard before on most of our favorite albums. It just sounds “right”. Clear as day highs with a beautiful but never exaggerated lush low end. And a smooth midrange that will make your jaw drop. Engage the “Tone” switch, and what you get is a vintage sound that will rival the best tube mic preamps out there. Trust me I know. I almost sold my Solo 610 because the warm unit gave me that “vintage” tone that I was after . Especially once I engaged the “Tone” switch. The only reason that I am keeping my Solo 610 is because, well, why not lol. Right lol. However I did almost return it based on the logic that since the wa73 can give me both a smooth sound and a vintage tone, why not save myself $800. If For some reason I could only keep one of these mic preamps, it would definitely be the Warm Wa73. What it really surprised me on was Bass DI. The Solo 610 has always been my “go to” di/mic preamp for bass di. It gives me me a kind of “Big and warm low end that can sound close to a bass amp in a mix. When I ran the same bass through the warm 73 however(with the “Tone” switch engaged) Wow!!! It has that vintage big bottom end that the Solo 610 has, but with a sparkling high end that just makes it sing in a mix. I’m very impressed with the Warm Audio Wa73 eq. It’s a great piece of gear not just for the money, it’s just a great piece of gear. Can’t wait to try out the rest of their line through American Musical €>>>>>>.

I should’ve bought this a while back. I love the warmth and clarity it gave my vocals. A blind test wasgiven on youtube and I made my decision to purchasethe Warm WA-73 Pre and EQ. The knobs feel good and the setup didn’t take to long once you know how to route things. If you need a quick tip for an a setting, use your favorite ‘73 plugin settings and dial it in on the hardware. Run some test, use your ears and that should put you in the ball park of where you want to be. This is making recording more fun again!

I'm beyond impressed with the performance of the Warm Audio 73'. I've had pre-amps in the past I used like Rolls and Art and this really transformed my mic. I have it matched with a Rode NTK Tube mic and all I can say is that it's like my mic was transformed. The 73' is extremely precise. The slightest adjustment changes the signal. That's the first thing I noticed with it. When you twist a knob or push in a button it gives an immediate difference to the sound output. Before purchasing this unit I searched and searched through videos and reviews of it but mostly all I found were people playing guitars and such but never a review just show casing the Pre-amp and what it can do to a signal input. It really does upgrade your sound to studio record ready level. I am using this for singing and it sounds wonderful to hear every nuance in my vocals that would usually get pushed aside with lesser preamps.

I just purchased this along with a WA-47 Tube mic from Warm Audio and I have to tell you, this combination is beyond incredible. I've never heard vocals so clean and warm. Wonderful, pristine, magical, vocals. The artist I recorded was blown away too! She is going to buy the same exact setup now because she fell in love with it. Granted, the producer knew what he was doing too. :) I can't wait to try it on acoustic instruments. Will use for overheads in the future when I buy one more. American Musical has made so many of my musical purchases possible with their easy finance program. Gotta love these guys/gals! A huge thank you to AMS and Warm Audio!
Great preamp with useful I/O options and versatile sound sculpting. I’ve been using a Shure SM7B into a Cloudlifter CL-1 into a Focusrite Clarett interface for the last three years. I recently decided I wanted something with more guts, a preamp with more gain and flexibility for future mics. I also wanted to simplify my signal routing. My mic input was still on the low side without cranking up my audio interface’s gain. When using my mic for regular voice chat (Discord), sound was lackluster. My solution was loop audio back through a Pro Tools session and send the processed vocal to Discord. This meant always needing to open Pro Tools and keep a session running when I wanted people to hear me. I will no longer need the added complexity. I send the output of the ... My solution was loop audio back through a Pro Tools session and send the processed vocal to Discord. This meant always needing to open Pro Tools and keep a session running when I wanted people to hear me. I will no longer need the added complexity. I send the output of the preamp straight into my audio interface and speaking level has enough gain to transmit cleanly through Discord.I was able to unpack, plug in, and rack mount my WA73-EQ in minutes. I loaded up a recent Pro Tools session and instantly went to work recording some vocal takes and comparing to before. This thing can add punch or color. It’s subtle, yet deliberate. I cannot wait to further dial in my settings for regular use.
I've had this mic pre for about three months. I'm liking it but I can't say I'm loving it. It definitely has some beef to it. I also heard some comparisons to Vintage Neve gear that proves it's very similar in that respect. But where it starts to roll of on quality is the smoothness of the top end. It's not a showstopper at all but isn't as smooth on the top as my Pacifica or LA610- which are transformer based mic preamps. So for vocals it's back to my Pacifica or LA610. This is best used on electric guitar and bass- at least in my world. If Warm could tighten up the smoothness of the top, it would be a 5-star mic pre. At the moment, I can't give it that.
I sat on the fence for so long about an external pre, the digital plug seemed to be working ok but I was looking for a bit more physical control, so decided to go for it.I already have the Warm Audio U-47 microphone so wanted something that would compliment it perfectly so went for their 73EQ and it has been a total game changer. As a newbie in all this home recording stuff I didn’t really fully understand, or appreciate, the difference a dedicated pre would make to a microphone, now I know and the results have blown me away!No wonder all the forums shout about a pre being the first and most important part in the vocal chain. The Warm Audio-73EQ has added so much sparkle to my chain and is giving incredible headroom and clarity. The EQ on the unit is superb and I ... This is my first hardware preamp and boy has it done wonders. I was using some plugin emulation before but this really has taken my recordings to the next level. Using it for vocals, snare, kick and bass. It thickens up the tracks considerably and they sound like they are ready for mixing. I mostly preferred the Tone switch in as that where it seems to really thicken things up. I don't have other 1073 style pre amps to compare to but would definitely recommend this and was well worth the money for me.
This EQ has a lot of character and you will hear it very quickly even with very small adjustments. I've been using it very successfully on vocals along with the dbx560A compressor. Not a subtle, surgical, EQ. It definitely adds harmonic richness.
