WD My Passport Portable Hard Drive for Mac 1 TB

First Western Digital is just a great brand. Everything they make is quality. I love my My Passport. 4tb is a huge amount of space. I digitally horde everything. I love that my items are safe on this hard drive. Barring a human error, I will never have to worry about losing all my photos or videos I have collected. Nothing beats portable storage that is dependable. Cheaper hard drives and less dependable brands are out there and I highly recommend paying a small amount more for a Western Digital.

This is 3 TB model, and it's working perfectly in both Windows and Mac upon respective formatting after partitioning. This actually works for me although the product might say its specifically for Mac journal.WD came in good shape and could easily be reformatted for specialized Mac or Windows file systems using standard operating system utilities. The prebuilt software is helpful to configure and start using the drive. Its also convenient to setup Mac timemachine backups to this device at ease.This is not heavy though and just a little thicker than some of the lower capacity USB powered drives I have used, but is still incredibly compact say 3X4 inches or so. The plastic drive case is smooth, and probably won't crush in or break. Data IO speeds are great as promised.

A bargain back up disk

1TB is a lot of back up. Although it is sold as reconditioned I can't see any indication that it isn't new. I use it as a Time Machine App backup. Works great. at a very reasonable price. Only gripe is that there was no manual included and the online explanation on the setup took a little digging in Western Digital web site.

Backed Up and No Fear of Data Loss

As described. Size is small enough to pocket. WD has good (not great) technical support and warranty service if you ever have to use it. My other WD drive products are working well after a few years. This drive has a fast transfer speed on MacBook Pro 2012 I7. Easy to setup secure app using apple keychain. Also works well on Windows 10 laptop I5. Quiet. No heat. Just works well as intended. Easy to optimize and compact drive for maximum efficiency. Slightly more expensive than others, but you get what you pay for. Tip: buy 50% more space than you absolutely need. These drives (not just WD) start to degrade gradually in performance once you pass that capacity.

I have about ten of these. I just keep buying them to keep all my class handouts and grading, student projects on each semester. They're pretty low priced, so why not? I label them on the back and pack them around for a semester or even a year and plug them in wherever I go. I've never had any trouble with any of them. They're actually speedy enough to work to and from, unlike some usb drives. I'm using Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign primarily, teaching classes, copying over work from various computers around the lab via Apple Remote Desktop. I've been using this system for several years, no problem. I love these drives. I know how to reformat the PC drives, but I really prefer the ones preformatted for Mac. I've had a few failures of internal drives, but the external portable drives have been very reliable.

Pros: It is small and neat. Looks great.Cons: I haven’t been able to make it work. I have owned external hard drives from other manufacturers, set them up in a couple of minutes and never had a minute’s problems. This WD product has been a nightmare from the start. I have spent hours and hours on the support line and many more hours on my Mac trying to make it work correctly but to no avail. To be fair the support staff have been extremely pleasant and persevering but haven’t been able to make it work. I am going to try again for the last time but I now have very little faith in the product.

Pros: Setting up of the WD My Passport was very easy to do. The instructions are in the device and appeared as soon as it was plugged in to my PC. Backing up appeared to go well which took about 2 hours to backup thousands of photos and music. All the files and folders appeared to be there. Good so far.Cons: Unfortunately the files would not open. I tried again on my laptop but again the files wouldn't open. I looked the problem up on the internet ( a lot of people are having the same problem ) but the answers to hopefully rectify this problem were far too technical for me. It will be a lot of money down the drain and a big disappointment to save my late fathers precious photos if I can't find someone who understands how to rectify this problem.

However, it is not necessary to purchase MAC formatted HD for use with Apple products. I have used this type/brand of hard-drive for several years now and I wanted to get a second one as a back-up because it's a good idea to replace old electronics. I am very happy with this purchase and product. I would occasionally open a file or video here and there to check if they got corrupted through the transfer somehow and there has been no problems. This is a great product and I cannot complain.
