picked it for a customer, two hour round trip, the drive was DOA. I've seen a few WD usb drives, various customers purchased these from different retailers over the last year, come into my pc repair shop that have failed. I'd recommed Seagate or Crucial, or better an Enterprise class drive in a 3.5" emclosure. For Mac users, an EVO NVME or SSD is best for Time Machine, due to continuous writes (vs a HDD that endures mechanical wear). Unless you're using an Enterprise grade HDD, Always use a cloud back service as well. google: 3-2-1 backup plan.

Only a couple weeks in so can't speak to it's reliability. It does function as a standard external hard drive. Data transfer does not seem as fast as other hard drives I have. I ordered 2 but only received 1. I had to call and I received a credit vs the second drive I wanted. I will try and assume it was not intentional to see if I would notice 1 missing from the order. My older passport external drives by WD had software to do automatic backups. This drive requires a subscription fee to use the software. So I am having to do the backups manually which is dissapointing.

Got this for backups. But then the Samsung T7 I got was so slow I decided to use that for backups instead. This spinning disk drive is actually faster than the Samsung SSD!It's the most utterly stupid thing Samsung ever did with the T7. The T5 was a solid performer, the T7 a dud that can be lapped by a normal old hard drive!Anyway, this works exceptionally well for a bus powered spinning disk. I keep all my projects saved here when travelling, then I make copies to a disk array when back at home base.My only gripe is that I wish it was USB C.

Got this drive as a backup for an 11 year old PC that was about to run out of memory. I needed to transfer 1.8 TB of data. I was able to connect it quickly and was able to transfer most of what needed in an hour or so. I didn’t have to use its proprietary software. The drive is fast and silent. Works great. It’s faster and more responsive than my again PC’s hard drive. Been using daily since. I highly recommend it.
This drive has performed reliably for nearly a year. No bad sectors. Huge storage and fast data transfer at good price. No disk drive lasts forever, but this one looks like it will give a lot of reliable service. I do power it down whenI don't need to access its files, which is consistent with how I use it. How it would function as an always on backup disk is not as certain, but it does have (I think) a power saving spin down mode, and I would not hesitate to use it for that purpose.
I bought two of these to replace a couple of WD "My Book" drives that gave me completely trouble-free service for years as backup using Windows 7. I built a new Windows 10 machine to replace the old one, and plugged the drive into its USB3 port. As soon as I did this, I lost all control of my USB mouse and was unable to get it back, even after disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse. In addition, Windows 10 failed to recognize the drive. There was no notification in the notification area that it was looking for any sort of driver or anything. At first I thought my system had locked up completely, but was able to quit Windows normally using only the keyboard. There was no notification in the notification area that it was looking for any sort of driver or anything. At first I thought my system had locked up completely, but was able to quit Windows normally using only the keyboard. After some experiments, I found that Windows 10 could see the drive just fine, and give normal mouse operation, but only if I booted the machine with the drive connected. This was 100% repeatable. I decided to try the drive in the Windows 7 machine. As soon as I did so, I got a tray notification saying that the system was searching for the "WD SES driver." It took a while, but eventually found it, and the drive worked fine in Windows 7 afterward. So I did a web search of "WD SES driver" and found a WD download page. Interestingly, the WD page I found says it's not needed for the system to recognize the drive. I downloaded and installed this driver and rebooted the machine without the drive connected. Then I plugged the drive in, and the mouse worked fine and Windows 10 recognized the drive right away. Both of them have been fine ever since. I suspect I may have never found the problem if I didn't have that Windows 7 machine available to try it with, which led me to the WD SES driver.
I bought WD passport of this model in 2020. I just used two times for pictures storage. Recently I found it was not recognized by computer. Checked with BestBuy, the BestBuy young girl was really nice and tried her best to solve the problem. But finally failed to get it recovered. She asked me to contact manufacture as BestBuy is only a seller and isn't responsible for any product problem. I lost all my files in my Passport, really a disaster for my job and my family!!! Never recommend this product!
I've been using various drives over the years, and frankly, Western Digital weren't always the most reliable. I guess that's why they push hard to be known as "WD" these days. I've been using a few solid state drives, and I'm just more satisfied with mechanical hard drives. The transfer rates on SSDs are inconsistent and sometimes the information doesn't transfer correctly, especially with media. Some will say that SSDs are more robust and failure is rare, but that's true only to a point. All drives fail eventually. You want security? Use the cloud, as I do with most things. Redundancy is key to keeping your files for decades. As far as I'm concerned, WD has improved tenfold, and I'm trusting their products more than ever before. Redundancy is key to keeping your files for decades. As far as I'm concerned, WD has improved tenfold, and I'm trusting their products more than ever before. As someone who started out using DOS at 23 (in 1986) with my own computer when no one that I knew had one or was even thinking about getting one, learning Apple Macs at 24, then Windows 2.8 on PCs at 26, and never skipping a beat from then until now, using hundreds of applications, learning code at 27, creating web sites (but before that, using BBS sites and university informational sites before there was the internet we know now), and running architectural offices with the most advanced computer systems and peripherals available for over 30 years,if I don't know what I'm talking about, no one does.
I use these to back up my photo/video that I take daily as a real estate/architectural photographer/videographer. Every day I dump the folder for each job into a catch folder with the date. Then I transfer that folder to these hard drives to keep my archive organized and computer hard drive free. They are small and reliable, and now I have all my photos and videos from my job archived and easily accessible and contained in a relatively small space. They are great and an important part of my work flow. The affordable price is important as I go through a lot of them.
My previous review had a response that said that the drive that I own is just too old. After looking into it, the issue IS NOT that the drive is too old, it's that it was formatted for Windows and not Mac. My Mac OS version does not allow you to write to NTFS (the current drive's format). The response didn't offer any kind of solutions so I had to spend a week looking into how to solve this. Here's what I found in case anyone else has this issue: The drive I have is formatted to NTFS format. As I stated in my previous review, I switched from Windows to Mac.Mac OS 14.0+ can only read this format. It cannot write to this format. What I have to do is back up all of the data from my drive and format my drive to HFS+J. I'm attaching a screenshot so that you can see.I can't believe the response I received didn't offer any kind of solution. Still giving it a 1-star review because the response is terrible. I'm not an expert but I do like to find solutions to my issues. The fact that this was a simple solution and the response to my review didn't mention anything close to what my issue was just shows that the people responding don't know a thing about the products that the company has. Unbelievable.
