DISH TV: Works as external drive to save programs

Once reformatted it cannot be used to safe data from your computer, unless you decommission it from DISH TV use, and reformat it for computer use, at which point you lose all your TV programs. SO: 1 harddrive ONLY for DISH TV. A different storage drive for your computer. Step 6: After reformatting was done, I had to unplug the external Passport harddrive. Step 7: At this point I got a real scare. My Hopper showed me that I ONLY had an external HD, and I had 0 programs so step 7 is unplug Hopper. Wait a few minutes and plug in (external HD NOT attached). Now it will see your DVR programming again. Step 8: Click DVR Step 9: Click Options Step 10: Plug in USB from Passport to Hopper (mine is on the back, but yours may be on front)Step 11: Click OPTIONS Step 12: Click Manage Recordings Step 13: Click "Select ALL" or choose just what you wish to save by clicking each program separately. Step 14: Click Transfer. NOTE: If ANY program is recording, the entire folder with that program WILL NOT TRANSFER! For example: I liked "Mom", and am recording the entire season so I can rewatch in order. The entire Mom folder was skipped because Mom was recording at the time. You then need to go back and repeat starting at Step 8, and select only the programs which were skipped. I initially tried every hard drive in our house, and NONE worked because ALL had larger capacity. I DID manage to record a lot of programs to a 500GB Samsung FlashDrive, but resolution was reduced a lot. I am in the middle of downloading, so I am not positive resolution will be the same as on the Hopper, but I think it will be. DISH TV says : NO FLASHDRIVES. A Flashdrive would likely seem to be the perfect solution because they are now storing more and more data, but I tried a 2TB flashdrive, and reformatted it to DISH and it did not work AT ALL. The Samsung 500GB DID work, and that would have been a usable option, except it was too little data for all my programming and had lower resolution. Resolution was satisfactory for me, though lower, but the capacity not big enough. I am trying to move my programs to an external drive because I am switching to the Hopper 3 on Monday. My current Hopper can record or play on 3 different lines at the same time. The Hopper 3 has 16 lines. My old Hopper stores up to 1200GB. The new 2000GB . I bought this just to transfer my programming, but it will be able to live permanently connected to the new Hopper for an extra 2000GB storage. There is a new box that appears when I click DVR, right at the top. it allows choosing either the Hopper HD or the External HD. If that disappears, unplug the External, and reboot the Hopper by unplugging , waiting, replugging.

I sent it to a data recovery center and if data had been recovered it would have cost $3000. Instead they told me the platters were too scorched and no data could be recovered. I had all of my personal and many of my professional files on this drive due to lack of space on my computer. I have no idea what I'm going to do now and am devastated. Don't bother with this drive. We contacted WD and they only said that they would replace the product. We would have to find a 3rd party to retrieve the data and pay for it out of pocket. I bought two of these drives within the last year or so, and one that was 10 months old just had sectors fail a few days ago (on a Friday for reference), and then another one that was about 14 months old had a catastrophic sector failure tonight (lowering hard drive health from 100% to 66.5%, measurements courtesy of DriveDx). I have already been in contact with WD Support about the first one, but they're about useless when it comes to helping customers, as they'd rather give you the choice to either cough up the hard disk space to back it up to a drive you own yourself, or pay them $25 to get a replacement drive while in possession of your original drive, all while paying shipping either way. Prior to this, I had a SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD fail on me, and they took months to rectify that situation so it'll be interesting to see what WD Support does here. All i know is that it's no wonder why they had a class action lawsuit filed against them in August for their faulty products. It's sad because they used to be a good company and I've been using their drives for almost a decade now, I still have my first one and it's still in working order all these years later. So it is with that I say that it is unacceptable a drive of theirs can't even make it more than a year before dying, and that I could never recommend this product to a friend. Heck, I could never even recommend it to my worst enemy. My advice: save up your money and buy a LaCie or Samsung drive, they'll actually last and aren't much more than WD charges you for their terrible product.

Not as good as I expected it to be

This drive worked perfectly at first, then began malfunctioning same day I got it. It works some days and other days my computer won't recognize the drive. I would format it but that would mean deleting some very important files. I got this so the photos for my photography class won't take up too much space on my laptop (plus I'm a graphic design major so space is already limited as is), but this drive is already malfunctioning. How am I supposed to have clear memory space when this drive can't be recognizable by my laptop?? I've tried everything, even bought new USBs to see if the USB that came with the drive was the problem but NOPE. From the looks of it, I doubt I can get some of the files I already have in the drive back and transferred into a different drive ... MoreThis drive worked perfectly at first, then began malfunctioning same day I got it. Very disappointed, will start looking into different brands of external hard drives.

I bought WD passport 4TB of this model in 2020. I just used two times for pictures storage. Recently I found it was not recognized by computer. Checked with BestBuy, the BestBuy young girl was really nice and tried her best to solve the problem. But finally failed to get it recovered. After several round emails with WD's technical service, they did nothing to get my Passport but tried best to sell their service and product again: pay fee for fixing and 10% discount for me to buy a new WD passport. Oh, my god! So smart WD Digital, sell defect product and earn extra profit again from it!!! I lost all the files in my Passport, really a disaster for my job and my family!!! Never recommend this product!

Let alone no single drive of that technology is 5TB in size.If you understand the TRUE technology behind the WD drive (as of the date this review went up) the pricing for it is perfectly fine and reasonable for what the technology can do.I am extremely tired of how far past the line of "questionable understanding" large tech manufactures have been pushing and getting away with over the last half decade. It is creating too much e-waste, distortion and negative understanding of value for casual tech user pushing increasingly absurd justifications for price manipulations for every increasing needs for profit.

I'm not an expert but I do like to find solutions to my issues. The fact that this was a simple solution and the response to my review didn't mention anything close to what my issue was just shows that the people responding don't know a thing about the products that the company has. Unbelievable.

Very good, but could be better

Five stars for external design (can be slipped into the breast pocket of a jacket), connections (a short USB 3.0 cord is provided but no need for a separate power supply), and immediate use (if Windows, it's just plug and play). Minus two stars for failure to include promised "quick install guide" (only the user agreement is in the packaging), the failure of WD's support site to provide download for instructions, the incompatibility of this drive with Bitlocker (I wanted to use Windows Pro's security to be consistent with my other external drives, but it won't work with this drive), and glitches when installing the WD utilities (had to force the install when it claimed it couldn't find its own EXE files). That said, it's a very handy little device. I wound up using the WD encryption utility and then tried it on a different computer that didn't have the WD utilities. Plugging it in automatically triggered a request to launch the unlock utility and it worked just fine on the new PC.Recommended if you aren't planning on using Bitlocker for drive encryption.Nick in Palm Springs

Working Intermittently
20 July 2023

Purchased this in March of 2023 as my backup for my originals photo and video files as well as my iMovie library. I have an Elements for work and 4 at home for my freelance work which perform flawlessly. However, this Passport has been nothing but issues for the last few months. It works intermittently at best and when plugging another drive or card into the hub (a HyperDrive USB-C for my Mac) the drive will not only disappear but it will eject the other drives and card plugged into the hub. I am blessed these cards and drives work after how many times they've been removed by this Passport.I ordered another Elements on Tuesday July 18th, 2023 and am currently transferring everything off the Passport onto the Elements. If I want the Passport to work I have to plug it in and unplug it multiple times before it actually works or is seen my my MacBook Pro. The hub and ports on the computer are fine as I have two screens and the hub plugged in to two other external drives with no issues. I have tried three different cables with it and still it will only work when it wants to.Once all the data from the Passport is on the Elements I am going to try to re-format/restore it and see if that does anything. If not, off to WD it goes for warranty work. If you want to have a heart attack and think you lost 2TB of original images and your entire library of raw video files go ahead and buy this...me, I do not think I will buy another.
