Bought one of these 9 months ago from Scan at nearly twice the price. At time of writing the 2TB version is going for £115, which to my mind is excellent value for this class of drive. With more PCIe 5 drives starting to appear, now is probably a good time to bag a bargain on PCIe 4. The SN850X from 9 months ago and this latest addition perform pretty much as advertised and feel snappy enough in use comparing favorably to other PCIe 4 drives that I’ve used. Now on to something of crucial importance and often overlooked. Once bitten as they say. Maybe it’s a logistics thing and the bigger an operation is then the easier it is for something to disappear. Anyway I’ve never had any such issues with Scan, so when it comes to something like this I have much more confidence in the likes of Scan to deliver and provided prices are somewhere near comparable then I’m playing it safe.

I purchased this drive direct from Western Digital and it didn't last a year. I'm now currently using a different NVMe drive now and my PC is working fine. I had this SN850X setup as a boot drive with Windows 10 desktop and I kept the PC up to date (drivers included). I always go through the standard shutdown process every time and one day it just couldn't boot to Windows. The drive no longer showed up in BIOS and using a external enclosure with the drive in it was unrecognizable. I contacted WD customer service and went through troubleshooting with them and came to the conclusion that the drive was dead (most likely firmware corruption). The drive was under warranty but they wanted it sent back to them with no physical damage. Bought this to expand the storage in a PlayStation 5. The drive is fast enough that it provides as good or better performance than the built-in drive, and it expanded the total available storage from 800GB (about 625 usable) to 2,800. That's great because as big as modern games are, the stock hard drive only puts about ten PS5 games at your immediate disposal. As for the buying experience, B&H customer service was stellar as always, the product shipped quickly and arrived in great condition.Sony made the installation process quick and easy, much like upgrading memory in a laptop, where you just have to access a side hatch rather than crack the whole device open. Of course I'd still suggest the usual precautions like an anti-static strap.I've seen some questions ... MoreBought this to expand the storage in a PlayStation 5. Of course I'd still suggest the usual precautions like an anti-static strap.I've seen some questions about this elsewhere, so I'll mention it here in case someone's deciding between an internal drive like this one or an external drive, which are usually cheaper and bigger. Internal drives can hold both PS5 and PS4 games, and you can play them straight from the disk as if it were part of the console, because it kind of is. External drives can be used to store whatever games you like, but PS5 games have to be transferred to an internal drive before you can play them. It's not a huge hassle, USB 3.0 data transfer speeds are pretty quick, but it does mean a bit of juggling.
Aside from various installation bugs which forced me to reseat the drive a few times before it picked up all Gen4 lanes, errors with boot sequence (it was not detected by the motherboard) and so on, that's taken me hours to fix, the biggest issue is that this drive gets very hot, very very quickly. And you WON'T know this, because the temperature sensor doesn't show the correct, spiking temps.I have a very warm room and a very warm PC but neither Samsung nor PNY have had similar problems. The thing is - WD throttles within seconds of reaching top speeds in less than favorable conditions. And while doing so the write transfers drop from, realistically, around 6GB/s to mere 0.3GB/s (yes, 300mb/s) even when writing a single large file.Other drives may throttle ... MoreAside from various installation bugs which forced me to reseat the drive a few times before it picked up all Gen4 lanes, errors with boot sequence (it was not detected by the motherboard) and so on, that's taken me hours to fix, the biggest issue is that this drive gets very hot, very very quickly. And you WON'T know this, because the temperature sensor doesn't show the correct, spiking temps.I have a very warm room and a very warm PC but neither Samsung nor PNY have had similar problems. The thing is - WD throttles within seconds of reaching top speeds in less than favorable conditions. WD Dashboard showed only mid to high 60C range but when - in desperation - I opened up the case, turned off heating in the room and opened the window to let some winter air in, the drive suddenly started working properly! Now I have fans buzzing at higher RPM and it largely works fine as well. So, be warned, it needs a GOOD heatsink, GOOD airflow and relatively low ambient temps. Otherwise it's slower than SATA.

I was upgrading my MSI Laptop GE66 Raider over the fall. I started by upgrading my RAM from 32 to 64 GB. My next step is to upgrade both my SSD for faster performance. The WD SN850 is worth the price now that it is a bit cheaper. It was also a major upgrade from the previous WD Black which was a 750 that came with my laptop. I highly recommend it for those who are looking to boost their performance. Also for those who are relativity new and becoming more of a D.I.Y. AKA F around and find out. I highly recommend this to everyone who loves Computer and looking to max everything out.
Got this drive for my Legion desktop as a second drive. I have games divided between the two drives. The 850x works very well. Not sure about how hot it gets. The slot it’s in is right below my cpu fan so I imagine that helps keep it cool enough. The only downside to this drive is the screw. This is the second WD black drive I’ve bought (other one was a 770 for my PS5) and it seems that WD doesn’t feel it necessary to include a screw in the box. The PS5 had a screw so not problem there but my desktop didn’t have a screw in that m.2 slot. I spent an hour or more trying different screws with no luck. Finally got one from the hard drive cover of an old laptop and it fit. So make sure you have the right screw to hold the drive down ahead of time.

So I bought this in preparation for the PS5 Pro. Have a 2TB WD SSD in my launch PS5. Moved over the contents of that drive to an external SSD. Removed it and put in the SN850X. The PS5 recognized it immediately. I am currently moving everything from the external SSD to it so when I get my pro all I have to do and remove it and put it in. Same exact specs as the Playstation branded model for $100 less. Plus got a $50 gift card for spending over $500. If I had to nit pick anything its that Best Buy shipped it in a non padded bag. Luckily it was fine but you'd think they would ship a $900 SSD in a box or at the very least a padded bag. ***Do better Best Buy!!!*** Also want to say this is my 2nd time purchasing anything at Best Buy in over 2 years. I bought an open box portal while visiting family up north a week earlier and then decided I probably would not use it so returned it at my local Best Buy in FL I had planned on getting the 4 TB drive but then decided to go for the 8TB. And I was in Best Buy every week before. I was really annoyed with how they handled the change to the Rewards program. Not that they changed it because I get things change. What annoyed me is that I was Elite Plus for many years and when they changed it they took away 7 months of Elite Plus status that I spent close to 6k the year before to get. So I decided I would take my money elsewhere. And I did for 2 years. But gotta be honest it felt good walking in there. The employees in my area are top notch and are always ready to help.
