20% failure rate so far

We are currently doing an RMA on one of the drives we have previously RMA'd.Needless to say, our relationship with this particular client has taken a substantial hit.

I originally brought the first failed drive back to the store I purchased it from and they rolled their eyes. Apparently, these SA510 drives have a bad chipset and suffer from an extremely high failure rate. Purportedly the worst of any big-name manufacturers. I have WD drives in my computer that are closing in on 20 years of age. This is a big disappointment.DO NOT PURCHASE SA510 DRIVES! You'll be wasting time and money paying for RMA (warranty) shipping and waiting weeks for the replacement.

We used to only use WD blue SSD drives in all out computers at the office. We bought a batch of 50 of the SA510 and over a period of 6 months we had to replace about 15 of them. Because of this we had to pull all SA510 disks from production costing us time and money. I talked to support to see if they were going to recall these disks only to find out that they are not. This is a black eye for WD and we have switched to using crucial disks for desktop machines.

INSANE high failure rate!
28 April 2023

These SA510 drives are absolute junk. I've been selling WD drives to my customers for MANY years, but that era has come to an end. I have two dead 1TB and one dead 500GB drive sitting on my desk to be RMA'ed, but I think I'll just destroy them and toss them in the bin. They're not worth replacing as they would just be replaced with the same model drive (REFURBISHED, EVEN), and I cannot, in good faith, sell these things to my customers. I've been replacing the drives I did sell to my clients with Samsung ones at my own expense as I have a reputation to uphold.

Junk Drive
5 October 2022

bought 200 of these, constant windows 10 crashs, drive goes offline, support blames our Dell computers, other drives we use for SSD has no issues. Support did very little testing other then gathering some logs. I suspect we have a bad batch of drives as all serial numbers are close in age.

Reliability is not there
9 February 2023

The failure rate on these SA510s is orders of magnitude higher than the standard WD Blue drives. There is a controller difference and the SA510 controller is failing at a high rate. I have installed probably 50+ of these in customer computers over the past year and approximately 20% of them have already failed. That's really, really, bad and does not bode well for the next year. I would avoid this drive until there is an officially published update to the controller/electronics info indicating that the hardware has been updated. Until then I would stick to regular WD BLUE 2.5" drives (WDS100T2B0A) which we have had much better luck with (maybe why they are more expensive).

SSD brings new life to Mac mini
2 November 2022

This WD SSD brought new life into my 2014 Mac Mini. It replaced a 5400 rpm HDD. Computer start-up time was reduced from over 15 minutes to less than 3 minutes. The speed of the computer overall is so much improved that it seems like a whole new machine.

Swap HHD to SSD using Acronis
15 November 2022

Swapped out the 1TB HDD disk that came with Lenovo laptop with this 500mb SSD. Performance improvement was great, laptop is now much faster. The only issue was with regard to the Acronis software that is available for download that comes with the device. The software would not install since the existing HDD drive was Seagate. Software wants to see a Western Digital drive to activate. In my case was lucky in that I had a WD passport external usb drive which when plugged in allowed the software to authorize. Once authorized it was a breeze to move the information from the HDD to the SSD.

Total failure problems with SA510 line.
19 August 2023

I have had one totally failed drive, and 3 slowly failing drives. Apparently this is a common problem with the SA510 product line. My failed drive was on a lightly used PC. After a month or so of non-use, it wouldn't boot from the drive. My sisters laptop used daily, started to fail at the same time, but we cloned the disk in time. She uses it extensively for work.My personal laptop is slow with SSD response speeds sometimes above 12 seconds, though this is possibly my fault from experiments I was running. My final PC I started using again just today is showing multiple BSODs. I can't be sure they're drive failures yet. But I never had problems before. Some on the forum claim the critical firmware update WD released doesn't work.I hope they figure this out soon. ... MoreI have had one totally failed drive, and 3 slowly failing drives.
