Did not work out of the box

My unit did not work properly out of the box. When connected, the green progress bar in File Explorer indicating the disk metadata was loading never finished. Attempts to write files to the drive caused File Explorer to freeze until the device was disconnected.I got mine on clearance from my local store. It was the only one in stock, so I never got the chance to see if mine was just a defective unit or indicative of the product in general. Western Digital is generally known to me as a fine manufacturer. In my 10 years of using WD products, I never had a fault ever occur. So, I am forced to go by this one experience with this SSD and can cannot recommend it.

Reasonably priced storage that can be used as a computer data back up. Great Solid-State Hard Drive

We wanted to keep our thousands of iPhone photos on a secure hard drive, and I was worried that the existing hard drive might crash the head and wipe out literally years of photos. I tried thumb drive back-ups and still use them for off-site storage. But this Western Digital 500 GB solid state hard drive is like a really big thumb drive, with all of the great reliability and no moving parts. The photos seem very safe on it, and there is room for many more years of photos. And the 3.0 USB speed made the transfer very fast (as long as you have a USB 3.0 connection on your PC.)

I had a good experience with these but at first it was very frustrating. I don't know if it's WD fault, but basically when they came there was no drive letter assigned to them so they didn't show up in the file explorer. But I found a solution so I thought I'd put it out there. Open Control Pannel, type in Disk Management, right click on the drive with no letter, and choose to assign it. You may also want to format it to NFTS instead of exFAT so you can compress files and because it's basically an upgrade. Also, if your files aren't copying, it might be just one corrupted file and the others are okay, so instead of copying the whole folder, copy sub-folders a few at a time so you can narrow down where the problem is and move it away or delete it. Outdated USB 3.0 hardware
15 May 2020

This is an SSD that is capable of SSD speeds but it is throttled by an outdated USB hardware (USB 3.0). You need a minimum of Gen 2 USB 3.1 to take advantage of the speeds that SSDs are capable of.Only two stars because you still do get the durability of a SSD but why cheap out on speed though? Speed is standard and expected with SSDs. This product is marketed to those who overlook the details. Overall it is just shady and the product should not exist. You wouldn't put wood tires on a 2020 car right?

Slow shipping takes 1 star off

Slow shipping takes 1 star off that's it. Otherwise the drive is small, adequate for my needs. Make sure you're okay with slower transfer speeds than others but it is not bad just about half as fast as others. Perfectly adequate for large file storage and not disruptive at all.

I copied 723gb from one My Passport Go (exFAT) to another My Passport Go (NTFS). The first 1/6 of the copy was at 300 MB/s. The next 5/6 was at 100 MB/s.As a reference: I copied 723gb from one My Passport Go (exFAT) to My Passport HDD. The entire copy was at a little bit over 100 MB/s.This does not make sense. My Passport Go to My Passport Go Copy:Please Advise!

Terrible installation!!!
21 August 2020

I removed the drive from the box it came in, and immediately noticed that there was NO documentation of any kind, and NO comments on how or where to go to find it. I tried to install and set up the drive without any instructions, which proved to be impossible. I then went online to see what I could find, and finally found a printable users manual on the Office Depot website (from which I had ordered the drive). So then I had to print this 32-page drive (after wasting an hour at this point trying to get the drive installed and set up), and then spend another hour reading through the user manual that I printed. Never again will I purchase a Western Digital product if they are too cheap to give me any instructions with the product - disgusting!

This drive is rather slow, and files take up much more size than needed. Traced this to being a exFAT partitioned drive. This was a patch between FAT32 and NTFS. Problem is file size limits, and when running exFAT, a folder with many files takes up tremendous unneeded space as the way exFAT allocates this. Now if copying a large file, say a disc iso, blazing fast. But folder with thousands of small files, very slow and the allocation size takes up to twice as much space as needed. So....answer is before you use it, format it to NFTS and this will greatly help the problem. Maybe someone with more experience than me can explain it. Close to 50% on mine.

Tiny footprint - works great
12 May 2020

I needed a simple and inexpensive storage solution for a laptop backup. I wanted a SSD for reliability and needed a half a terabyte to be sure I had enough space. This little guy was on sale so I grabbed it. It's great. I can't speak for gaming or other high transfer-rate applications, but my backups ran great with no issues and the entire device is about the size of a half a deck of playing cards. Perfect.
