Drive failed after 6 months, WD touts a multi-year warranty, yet makes it next to impossible to process an exchange. The site requires that you establish an account. Requires Photos of the SS# numbers and receipt. B&H does not print the serial number of the device on the receipt as Amazon does. I bought three drives from B&H, and one from Amazon. Unfortunately the failed drive was not the one purchased from Amazon. I cannot match a receipt with the serial number of the failed drive. The position of the serial number is along a curved edge that makes getting a clear image very, very difficult. Buy a different drive, and buy from Amazon.

Maybe I got the one out of several thousand that fails for no apparent reason. It worked great before failure. Data copies over to it extremely fast. Cost effective when on sale. I kept it plugged in to my iMac 24/7 and was never concerned because it never felt too warm to the touch. Usually shut the computer off a few times a week to give everything a break, but apparently this drive didn't like that. It just disappeared from my system randomly and now won't show up. I've tried 3 different USBC cables and tried it on my MacBook Air as well. Nothing will recognize it, and now almost half a terabyte of data is gone. Thankfully most of it backed up (this is why you make backups of your backups), but... not sure I'd trust this particular device again for my use case.
I got to have a decent backup for movies off of another external drive (I actually have copies on 3 different external drives! LOL). Being an SSD I figured it would be more stable than the other 2 non-SSD drives I use. For the most part I have no issues, it hasn't given me any issues with the actual drive, but the connection from my Mac to the drive is questionable. Regardless of how I hook it up, it will continually disconnect. Initially I thought bad cable, but I tried a different cable (an actual Apple cable) and it did the same thing. Looking at the drive connection, my guess is that the actual connection at the drive has issues as it is a little wobbly. With the Apple cable, it doesn't seem to do as much but that's probably due to the length of the cable. The cable it comes with isn't very long so using with a portable MacBook it won't like it unless you are on a desk and not on your lap. Otherwise it is a great little drive that doesn't take up much space when you're not using it. For the cost its a must have considering SSDs are usually considerably more expensive.
I have been using numerous WD external hard drives for years and the My Passport portable SSD drive is the worst. The backup speed is average for the SSD but viewing the backup folders and files is excruciatingly slow. It takes about a minute to open a small file and it will freeze Windows Explorer after opening a few small files.Unlike the earlier MyPassport, Ultra Passport, Essential, WDMyCloud, etc., that were quick to install, the Passport SSD also has poor user manual (non-existent) that lacks clear and adequate set up instructions and was agonizing to install. I had to scour the internet for information to download additional software.I am not sure if the new unit is defective and if not, I will return it to avoid further problems with a product that I ... MoreI have been using numerous WD external hard drives for years and the My Passport portable SSD drive is the worst. Bought the 2TB version in February 2022. My last WD external drive lasted many years so I went for WD again. It's an easy-to-use plug-and-play solution and fast. So far, great.Today, I decided it was time to mirror it to my two backup drives and it suddenly stopped working without warning. It was about 85% full and on average, I used it a few hours per week.I can still see the drive in the device manager, with the name changed back to factory settings. I cannot open the drive or access any files. In file explorer, clicking on a recently used folder on the drive only shows the dialogue: Please insert a disc into SDHC (D:).When going to "safely remove hardware and eject media", it shows the factory setting name but the drive is greyed out.I lost a ... MoreBought the 2TB version in February 2022. Partially, it's my own fault for not backing up more frequently. At the same time, I really do expect a drive that is only in use a few hours a week to last longer than a year.
I purchased 2 of these SDD drivers in Jan of 2021 (both are 2TB models).Transfer speeds are fast and good when using the drive. Response time of the drive is slow when the drive is inactive and then reactivated to dump files on the drive (especially when building folders or navigating folders quickly within the drive). However, my complaint is that last week one of the two drives suddenly stopped working during a file transfer. Then the drive showed up as renamed (not the name it was given) and blank of any data (note: drive was getting closer to 80% full). Contacted local SanDisk and had the drive sent to them but they were unable to recover the data and only planned to replace the drive free of charge. However, with replacement they would not send the old drive back. Since I really need the data I did not agree to the replacement and am having the drive sent back to me. Possibly I will try another third party to recover the data. I have been using external hard drives for the past 20 years and never ever had an issue with HDD drives. This is my first experience with a WD SDD drive and it is terrible. Only 9 months after purchase and failure and unable to recover my data. Also, unable to replace the drive without full surrender of the broken drive. I have no concern to surrender the old drive if they can recover data. Even no discount to keep the old drive on new drive purchase. Solution for a bad product is just to replace a new one - whatever happened to building a quality product? This is customer's data that the drive is suppose to be securing. 9 months on a drive that cost over 300USD. Drive was cared for and always placed in a case, never dropped, never outside or damaged in any way.
Bought WD 2TB My Passport to use as storage for my photography files on my new MacBook pro 2019 running OS12.4 Monterey.First, This drive seems to be not fully compatible with the smart drive utilities. After using the drive for less than a yr. It started showing a failure on the WD app drive tests. Yet passed on Apples disk utilities. Did an RMA and WD sent me a new drive. Which failed the WD quick drive test. And again, The Apple disk utilities shows as passed. Did a reformat from the one it shipped with to APFS. Drive still shows as failed on WD utility but passes in Apple disk utilities. The SSD drive seems to be accepting data from my other WD drive. So I'm sat here scratching my head as to what is going on. Can't be trusted and isn't even compatible with it's manufacturers own utilities program.
The WD MY PASSPORT SSD 2TB drive is a Great little drive with a lot of space for system backups. This drive is replacing my WD My Passport Ultra 1TB drive that I have been using for “Time Machine” backups on my MacBook Pro. The My Passport Ultra 1TB drive was working fine, I just wanted a faster drive with more space. I formatted the new SSD drive as APFS (Case-sensitive, Encrypted). APFS is the default file system for Mac computers running macOS 10.13 or later, features strong encryption, space sharing, snapshots, fast directory sizing, and improved file system fundamentals. APFS is also optimized for the Flash/SSD storage. The old My Passport Ultra drive always worked fine, but the backups were taking 15 to 18 minutes. I would Highly recommend this drive.
