The goal is to stay as close to if not higher than a 34% protein content without adding any unnecessary additional protein fillers such as Pea or Potato protein. Pet lovers who have dogs with sensitive stomachs can take comfort in knowing the Lactobacillus level per daily serving is an impressive 80 million. Whatever you do try to avoid dog foods that add brewers yeast and any unnecessary starches whenever possible. Many times it just comes down to buying the best quality dog food at a price you can afford. Ultimately the true final decision maker will always be your dog. Happy Tails Everyone :)

Bring Back the Resealable Zipper!
17 July 2018

After adopting my 7yr old German Shepherd, I went through a lot of dog foods before finding this one. This dog food is great and I have been feeding it to my pup for the last 6 months. My only complaint is that they removed the resealable zipper some time between May and June, this caused my 26-lb bag of food to spoil during a recent heat wave (SoCal, no A/C). It took a lot of diarrhea and 1 vet visit later to figure this out (the vet didn't even know, just ran a test to say she didn't have any parasites and gave me broad spectrum meds which did nothing to relieve her). After fasting my dog and some trial and error I figured out it was the food (she wouldn't eat it any way unless she was starving, she knew it was bad before I figured it out, GSDs are smart!). Just wanted other owners to be aware that they should find a secondary container for their bags or another way to keep them sealed to avoid going through my same experience. On a positive side note, I made Chewy.com aware of what happened and they replaced the bag for free as I had just bought it! Great customer service, will keep purchasing from here!

Dog hates it
13 June 2023

My dog normally loves the Wellness Core foods, but this particular flavor doesn't appear to agree with him at all. He is visibly upset eating this food--from refusing to eat it (even with food toppers), to puking it up after the fact, to eating a ton of grass (presumably from his upset stomach). It's only been a few days and I'm ordering his usual Wellness Core (Turkey) grain-free food. Never ordering this one again. Ugh.

Dogs are avoiding their bowls completely
26 February 2024

I ordered this since my dogs old brand of food Castor and Pollox was discontinued from the Chewy site. I had been mixing it with their old food slowy and they were eating it a bit but now that their old food is gone they are both refusing this food. They have both gotten diarrhea even though I slowly transitioned them for a month. They both are flat out refusing it. I will be canceling my subscription.

I have two dogs; Puddin', a 6 year old lab/rhodesian mix and Lil T, a 7 year old chihuahua/pug mix, both of which have grain allergies. I have heard and seen a lot of good things about Wellness and the great quality, and when I found that they had grain free, I was super excited to try it out. The girls also suffer from dry skin in the winter, and my little one just have sensitive skin all around because of dry winters and allergies, so I went with the fish formula to see if it would help them out. Marilyn unfortunately suffered a severe allergic reaction to some dog perfume I used, and we actually got the package from Chewy a day or two after she experienced her skin redness and pain. Within the week, her skin improved and all of the damaged skin flaked off and revealed an even more magnificent skin and coat! Lil T quit scratching and licking her legs and paws and the redness in her skin, fur, and nails has almost completely gone (she still licks because of other irritants from being outside, unfortunately.) They both aren't picky, by any means, but they definitely love this food more than any I have ever given them. I am so happy with how quick I got my order, especially since I ordered over the weekend. I will definitely continue to order everything I need for the girls from you guys! thank you so much for providing such great products at such awesome prices and providing amazing service to us and our pets!

Too early for a 4 or 5 star review

I was feeding my Golden Retrievers a 5 star kibble with a transition every few months of the protein source. I didn't plan the transition, but figure they tired of eating the same food day in and day out. They were back to Chicken/Sweet Potatoes when my female Golden (20 months) came up with a hot spot. The hot spot spread as we attempted to get it under control. I changed to CORE Ocean hoping the fish protein was different from the chicken or any of the meat proteins I had been feeding them and if she suddenly was allergic to Chicken/chicken meal or any of the other ingredients in the chicken bag, fish was at the opposite spectrum. My Goldens all seem to like the food and are on day 14. Only time will tell if Core Ocean will be our food choice.

I believe a good way judge the quality of what goes in your dog is to keep an eye on what comes out of it. Might not be a pleasant topic, but the average size of your dog's feces is a great indicator of how well his food digests and how much is just filler. Over my dog's first year we'd tried a half-dozen brands (and different varieties in those brands) trying to find the right food. The breeder recommended a freeze dried raw combo which you rehydrate with water. Mack's dumps were gigantic and looked exactly - EXACTLY - like what he'd eaten. And the vet said he was underweight - so it was off to try a dry kibble.Until stores begin stocking bags which state "100% Cow!" or "Pure Crunchy Turkey" (at $200 a pop) we have to accept that even premium dog foods are going ... MoreI believe a good way judge the quality of what goes in your dog is to keep an eye on what comes out of it. And the vet said he was underweight - so it was off to try a dry kibble.Until stores begin stocking bags which state "100% Cow!" or "Pure Crunchy Turkey" (at $200 a pop) we have to accept that even premium dog foods are going to contain useless fillers. With the dizzying range of Grain-Free, Limited Ingredient, Raw-Infused or "Wild" kibbles out there it's kinda hard to figure out what's optimal for a dog.Until we got to Wellness Core, our boy was still leaving impressive piles in the back yard. Part of that may be that many brands have really small morsel size. Mack was just swallowing more than he was chewing. That can effect how much can be digested in the first place. Wellness has bigger chunks which has him crunching away longer. We ended up with Ocean Recipe by chance - but it's yielded the smallest stools of all. The dog loves it and his weight and energy are on the money. Great stuff - we're gonna stick with it.

Worked wonders for my dog
7 December 2020

My puggle had been suffering from itchy, red inflamed skin. Been on and off apoquel for years, had cytopoint injections... tried a variety of medicated shampoos/sprays, and natural ointments.. nothing truly helped. The vet kept telling us it was seasonal allergies and there was nothing we could do but just treat them. I decided to switch her over to Wellness Core Ocean and I am so glad I did! What a change in her skin and coat. She still itches here and there but it seriously has been a game changer. She also has more energy. My husband keeps saying, “she’s like a puppy again!” Such an improvement!! Oh and my dog loves it, she eats it right up! I’d definitely recommend!
