Winsor & Newton is committed to the pursuit of perfection. Ever since it was founded by the partnership of chemist William Winsor and artist Henry Newton it has been a driving force in developing colour chemistry, pioneering art materials, and key developments within fine art practiceFormulated with the finest pigments for beautiful colours with excellent tinting strength; use thickly or thin to a very fine glaze. Available in 133 colours. W&N colours are rafted from single pigments wherever possible to create individual colours; this ensures clean, accurate mixing. There are more than 80 single pigment colours in the range, so you can mix new variations with confidence. Paintings last well beyond our lifetime if the materials you choose allow for that. Years from now, for your work to be seen as you intend it to be, your materials need to be lightfast (not fade from exposure to light) and permanent (not change over time). So that you can trust in the longevity of your work, our oil colours are tested for these qualities and have some of the best ratings (at least AA or A).

It's really difficult to find a good Cobalt Blue that is economical for the size and beautifully pigmented. I love this Cobalt Blue! I am teaching a Beginning Oil Painting Class. We will be working on a Color Harmony project that will require a lot of paint. It would be a good idea to buy large tubes for this assignment. Cobalt and Cadmium's will used in this palette. (Cadmium Yellow M, Cadmium Red M and Cobalt Blue) The Cads and Cobalt Blue 150ml tubes are affordable where in other lines, those sizes are astronomical in price. Utrecht Oil Paints is what we will be using. With Utrecht, you can depend on Quality. Good things come in Large packages! When does that happen? Thank you Utrecht! #sweepstakes

Absolutely. One of my favorites.

I am teaching a class on Beginning Oil Painting. Utrecht is one of my favorite lines of moderately priced oil paints that are NOT student grade paints. I always suggest Utrecht Oil Paints to my students. I used to buy Utrecht paints at a Utrecht store in Los Angeles, which is now sadly gone. I am happy to see that Blick has re-established the line. It's a good one. I have a collection of Utrecht Brushes, bought years ago, that I covet. Utrecht is a superior oil paint for students and professional artists alike, because for the price, you receive great quality. The hues are rich, highly pigmented and easy to mix. They are consistent in anything you would like to do. I highly recommend. #sweepstakes

Another paint that is almost never not on my palette. Great for deeper skin tones and shading lighter skin (add bit of violet to desaturate if that is wanted). also great as starting color for mixing up a number of weathering and "dirty" grime colors and effects as well as for rich woods. Well pigmented and thins nicely to use as a filter. I really need to pick up more soon, maybe a #sweepstakes winner?

Beautiful pigment, long dry time a plus
11 July 2024

I really like this white. It's a bit stiffer than winton's soft mixing white. I tend to like the stiffer paints and add walnut oil as needed. It takes longer to dry than my other paints and thats expected. I like the longer dry time so i can squeeze a bunch of paint out without worry it will dry on me before i use it.#sweepstakes

Excellent but superfluous if u have both warm and cool reds
16 September 2024

If I could only have one red paint, it would be PR209, since it makes both decent oranges with a warm yellow and nice violets with ultramarine, is transparent and works well to adjust greens, and deepened a bit with phthalo green or whatever, it resembles alizarin. In practice though I usually use pyrrole scarlet R255 and quinacridone rose V19, which improves the oranges and violets, and both are generally cheaper than R209 as well. As an alternative to V19, R209 will also mix radiant rose tints with R122, which I cannot do with R255.

How to use Underpainting White
6 October 2023

This is what is archivally sound to use as a ground base at the start, to cover white canvas. Use a rag squeezed damp, +Dilute paint slightly, but paint not watery with 4 parts odorless mineral spirits to 1 part cold pressed linseed oil. Do not thin till like watercolors. Wendell Upchurch, former chemist for Winsor Newton personally gave me this formula. It has worked for 30 years. You can tint the white with small amounts of colors, preferably earth tones + more stable colors.

Review of Winsor & Newton Artists' Oil Colour 37ml Series 1
12 September 2024

My first oil paints were handed down to me. From my father when I went to art college. I became a designer and not until retirement did I returned to oil painting. Some of those old Winsor and Newton survived to be used. I have used other brands but though the the differences are small I find Winsor and Newton oils reliable and familiar.

Very, very thick.
27 March 2024

I normally use M. Graham oils. I had a tube of W&N Windsor Blue from college (over fifty years old) it was wonderful, creamy intense. So,I bought two tubes of Winsor Blue, red shade and green shade. They are both so thick that when trying the thin to paste they form lumps... really hard to get out without using a pallet knife to break up. Very difficult to us... and I am painting impasto. I can't imagine using this with a more fluid technique. Not for me.

great value

Very happy with the correct items delivered efficiently. The only thing I would love to see improved is to ship goods without plastic packaging. Other art suppliers are achieving this very well in secure recycled cardboard boxes and there are great alternatives for biodegradable/compostable cushioning and protection available now which I would love to see used by all businesses. We all need to make an effort. Thanks for your great service and quality products
