Woolworths Belgian Milk Chocolate Block 190g

Chocolate cravings. Gave this sample to a chocoholic to try as I'm not much of a chocolate enthusiast. Made in Belgium from local and imported ingredients. This product is suitable for vegetarians. There are 10 serves per pack, the bar is divided into 10 squares approximately 4x4cm each, 1 square per serve. The verdict was a budget friendly chocolate fix at $2. 19 per 190g pack. The texture was smooth and creamy and the flavour was not too sweet especially considering the addition of salted caramel. Good value for money and would definitely purchase this item. At the back you notice the expiry date at the top (around 9 months in my case), the nutrition information, the ingredients. It contains palm fat, but sustainably sourced, and a minimum of 32% cocoa solids. The paper is recyclable, the foil not. The price is very good. $2. 19Made in Belgium from impored and local ingredients. With chocolate, a Belgian production is quite reassuring I'd say. Once you remove the foil, you find 10 pieces that can be easily separated. The caramel crunch gives a very nice touch to the chocolate. It's not as sweet as I expected. A very enjoyable experience. There is just enough caramel to make a beautiful rich flavour, without being overbearing. The choice to use solid instead of liquid caramel, gives a really nice, diverse texture, and allows the chocolate to be nice and thin, not bulky. I loved it! Sadly for my daughter, she will have to share the rest with me!

The paper packaging is very attractive in a great shade of blue. The "Belgian" origin is strongly highlighted on the label so the expectations are heightened. The block inside is wrapped in the expected foil and looks double the thickness of the usual 100g blocks of good quality European eating chocolate on the shelves. The extra thickness initially seemed indulgent, but with the individual squares being the same larger size like the "other" European blocks it actually seemed more awkward. The serving size suggestion for one person is one of these large thick squares. There is no 'crispness' to the bite and the texture is just on the dubious side of greasy and grainy - a bit like a less favourable and cheap Easter egg chocolate. Breaking the square open gives a look like it has a powdery graininess and is not so alluring. The flavour is okay; I think I prefer it to the usual Cadbury block that I find more unpleasant for it's greasiness and glugginess. A higher cocoa solids proportion than 32% would be nicer, I think?Given that this chocolate did not attract interest from the family, I got creative and thought I would try a single-serve square portion melted into a 150ml serve of milk. The sweetness is definitely there, but you still crave a bit more of that real "chocolate" hit so it does not satisfy as well as a really good hot chocolate. Despite this, it is nicer melted into a hot chocolate rather than face the awkward large square that you have to keep nibbling at. A good value item in a great package that just needs some refinement.

The salted caramel bits give a nice crunchy texture which blends perfectly with the not too sweet creamy chocolate. Tasty, moreish and well balanced - what more could I ask for. I don’t think I’d buy this again - I’m leaning more to the opinion that if I’m going to eat chocolate I’d rather get premium and pay more for it rather than get a bigger block of cheaper chocolate that I don’t enjoy as much (and will probably eat far more of). I didn’t dislike it, it was a decent block of chocolate and better than I expected for a home brand, but it just wasn’t as good as I’d have hoped. I shared it with 3 other people and they had similar thoughts overall.

No bite size squares to break off?? This is an average tasting chocolate, definitely not Belgian chocolate but good for the price for cooking perhaps. My low score is because there are only 8 ginormous t squares to the block like the Lindt blocks but they can get away with it because theyre a very thin chocolate & easy to break smaller off needed but this block is 1 cm thick & very difficult to snap into normal portion squares especially now in winter without making a huge mess & having small bits of chocolate everywhere. Also, I will not repurchase because the aqua blue dye from the wrapping has stained my counter top every time its left sitting there & the counter has not been wet either & its very difficult to get off without bleach. I noticed that Woolworths also stock it in Milk chocolate, salted caramel flavour, which I would be interested in try. I'd be very keen for them to made a dark chocolate version with more than 70% cocoa. I'll finish this by noting that the paper can be recycled. I like this idea. The actual chocolate needs improving to bring it up to the next level in flavour by sourcing more high quality ingredients.
