A good stud finder for the price.

This is a big improvement over the stud finder I've had over many years by the same manufacturer. This one tells you via the display screen where the edge of the stud is and how close you are to the center of the stud as you move it closer to the stud center. Once you've found one edge, you can reposition the finder on the other side of the stud, slide it along the wall and again the stud finder will alert you to the edge of the stud. I find it works well on deep scanning mode.

I purchased this 1 year ago. I hung 4 wall mount heaters and 1 medicine cabinet with it. When not in use, I removed the battery. I went to use it yesterday, put in a known good battery and it lit up for about 2 seconds then died. I swapped the battery with a new one and it still didn't work. Put the battery into a different stud finder and it worked without issue.Warranty replacement (regardless of the age up to 20 years) costs $10 for the return shipping AND you have to pay to ship it to them as well. That's the same thing as buying a new one!Do yourself a favor and pick something else.

Hit or miss, completely untrustworthy
20 September 2023

Inconsistent in both modes. Gives random false positives and false negatives. I'll drive a nail or screw and end up with nothing but drywall and a lot of holes. I end up having better luck rapping my knuckles. To make matters worse, ergonomically, it is an extremely difficult tool to use. Because of its shape, it is difficult to hold the button down to activate it and grasp the tool at the same time, very awkward to use. I actually hate using this tool. I'm writing this as I am searching for something better.

Requires new high test battery or else it acts up
19 April 2021

I initially wrote a negative review of this, which I've copy pasted below. Basically, I put batteries in and it detected no studs at all in my walls, including in a room where I installed some cabinets just a couple months ago so I know where the studs are. Then I did troubleshooting on this, as if it were a vintage electronics item. What I determined is that it has a high draw on the battery that you put into it. And if it gets a bit less draw than it wants, it doesn't tell you to change the battery. Instead it acts very buggy and either says studs are everywhere or that studs are no where. By putting in a fresh high test battery, I was able to get it to work. This is really bad, because Zircon doesn't tell you anywhere that it needs high test batteries. And, instead of programming it to give a "low battery" message when the battery is not good enough for it, they have it just try to work, then not have enough power and do strange electronics things like detecting no studs or detecting studs everywhere. That's why there are so many bad reviews. It doesn't work if you just pop the Sunbeam low test battery that you got from dollar store in it. Also, I'm assuming that after you use your high test name brand battery for a certain amount of time and the battery gets low that it will start acting up again. I think this can work if you put a fresh battery in before each project, or test it on a wall where you know where the studs and wire are before you do a new project (ie. to test whether the battery is still good enough for it). When you test it out, to make sure the battery is to its liking, make sure that you also watch a video demo of it on YouTube, so you know how it is supposed to act and so you can meaningfully compare. But, if the battery is regular rather than high test, or if the battery gets low, or if this has been in your toolbox with a battery in it for a bit, then this will start acting up and mislocating studs.Zircon should reprogram these to do a battery check first, and if the battery is not good enough, then the stud finder should say "low battery". That would make for a reliable low stress tool. But, Zircon hasn't done that. Zircon also hasn't uploaded any video demos of this, so to test your battery, you have to find regular people's YouTube demos. And, Zircon doesn't tell you to use high test batteries, even though it will act up with regular batteries. All sources point to Zircon not caring whether or not this works. Don't buy this, because if the battery gets low or is not to it's liking, then it's going to go haywire and mislocate studs and leave you with a big patching job or a failure-to-launch on your project. Here's my original review:I am doing a project and misplaced my stud finder that I already had. The one I already had was also made by Zircon, and I think it was model no. e40. It worked great, so I went with Zircon again and got this fancier model, the L50. This L50 was an emergency purchase to let me finish my project. It detects no studs at all in the wall. I tried it on stud sensor and on deepscan. I am using it in a 1970s house that is 2x6 framing with 1/2 inch drywall on top of that. There is nothing unusual going on, and I got great results on past projects with my other Zircon stud finder that cost less (the e40 model) that I misplaced in the chaos of redoing a closet. This one, the L50 just doesn't work. It says "ready" then says that there are no studs at all. I even went back to a bathroom where I had hung cabinets using my older stud finder, so I know exactly where the studs are there, and this one just passes over them and says there aren't any studs. I am using a fresh new battery that I haven't used in anything else before. So, the battery I put in it is good. Avoid this model at all costs.

DOES NOT WORK!!!! Scanned a 11 foot wall 6 times. 2 times there were no beeps. 4 times it beeped in a variety of spots that do not align with previous scan spots. So according to Zircon, I either have No studs, or, the wall is all studs. All horizontal scans with a new 9V Duracell battery. I will be returning to Lowes tomorrow and returning the 9V batteries. Wouldn’t have to return the batteries if Lowes would stop carrying garbage Zircon products. So not only did I waste 1.5-2 hours of my life today, but I’ll waste another hour tomorrow making the return. Thanks for nothing Zircon! Don’t bother responding Zircon because I’m sure your not going to do the right thing and reimburse me for 2.5-3 hours of my life that you wasted, or send me a complimentary “upgraded” ... MoreDOES NOT WORK!!!! Works awesome.

I was hesitant after reading the lower reviews but decided to go for it based off of the positive reviews. I'm glad I did.I recommend reading the instructions, following them, and spending a little time messing around with it before putting to use.I particularly like the part of the instructions that mentions using common sense and "mapping out" your wall. It makes a lot of sense to me.I think if someone just pulled it out of the package, tried to figure it out, and assumed it just automatically and magically locates studs they would be discouraged. It does work very well once you are familiarized with the operation. Best stud finder I've ever used by far.

Zircon L50
12 February 2023

The tool lasted less than 12 months before breaking. This was my first time buying a digital stud finder. Worked great for the first six months then noticed it giving false readings on studs. Tried using it recently and the digital reading flashes when trying to use it. Changed batteries and flipped between stud and deep scan, no change. Expected a better quality tool that would last at least a couple years but couldn’t even get a year out of it. Looks like I’m going back to a non digital stud finder. Save yourself the money and go with a different brand.

already malfunctioning
8 March 2022

I bought this Zircon L50 stud finder August 2021, I used it a couple of times last year and it worked fine. Just tried to use it again today and it keeps malfunctioning. When I slide it over the wall, it will work once and then it will start beeping continuously and won't pick up anything, I have to stop and calibrate it again. Again it works once, and then it starts the continuous beeping. I don't have the original box and it's outside the return window at Lowes! Waste of money and now when I need one I am going to have to run to the store (gas is expensive!) and buy another stud finder. Even though this was on the cheaper side, you would think it would last more than 6 months! Wish I could get my money refunded or a replacement. Very disappointed!
