I love the size and its 32 bit, didnt mind the cheap plastic, but this thing has failed me multiple times. I definitly hit record several times and the red light came on and many times it just did not record. I guess mine is faulty. I lost a good bit of money and had to deal with an angry client.

Great for now

Sure the build quality could be better. But for $200 a 32bit float recorder it's hard to complain. With rechargeable AAA batteries it won't cost too much to power this thing. Also nice that you can power it via usbc. Helpful that they got around the patent which allows you to monitor audio while recording. Sure, I would have liked to be able to monitor wirelessly, but hopefully that will come soon.If these break soon, I'll probably just keep getting more of them until there's the next generation either from zoom or tentacle sync.Tip: In order to open the battery door easily, just lightly press down in the middle of the battery compartment (where it says f2) and it should come off easily. Don't try to pull it off from the sides.

Proceed with caution!

I should start by saying that I was really, really looking forward to this product. Zoom has a fantastic reputation, and I have been very excited to have 32-bit float recording capabilities at a price-point I could afford. But, this product is sub-standard.To begin with, the battery-cover door is flimsy and does not fit well. When replacing the batteries, it takes multiple attempts to align the covering *just right* to get it back into place -- and even then, it's not a tight fit. I do have concern of the door popping open when wearing the device.Second - the software for managing settings and formatting the SD card is desktop-only. I have no idea why this is happening, but this is absolutely not the way an electronic device should work.So far, the sound quality is fine. But I really wish I had waited for a later model.

Solid 32 bit tech? lackluster design.
11 July 2022

I have always loved Zoom products and prefer them over Tascam, but I?m not a big fan of the design of the F2. It?s technologically sound with 32bit recorder, but a lot of compromises were made on the unit itself to reduce costs. There is no screen or controls other than turning it on, recording, adjusting headphone levels and?. That?s pretty much it. No battery level details and no audio levels details. I get how the 32 bit tech takes up all the costs at the moment but I wouldn?t mind paying a little bit more for on-device controls. At the moment, the only way to get that is to get the bluetooth version.Additionally, the build quality is pretty cheap. Pretty thin feeling plastic all around and I?m pretty sure the battery door will fail first. In the end, it gets ... MoreI have always loved Zoom products and prefer them over Tascam, but I?m not a big fan of the design of the F2. They fixed it!

I bought this recorder a month ago despite the reviews after hearing some issues have been addressed. I have used it multiple times with no errors. They have fixed the issue with the connection of a microphone, it does not create a popping sound. And I guarantee you that every single person that has been experiencing the non-recording issue did not read the manual on how to properly format the device, which is done via Zoom's app on a computer. The audio quality out of it is top notch. 32-bit float audio is incredible. The F2 is 100% a set-it-and-forget-it audio recorder. Having to format through a computer is kind of annoying, but having the strength of 32-bit audio for lav mics at this price is an insanely good deal. This has become an essential piece of ... MoreI bought this recorder a month ago despite the reviews after hearing some issues have been addressed. Too many issues
30 January 2022

I've used DR-10's for years, and was excited to upgrade to this Zoom F2 for weddings. Well, I'm back using my DR-10's. On multiple occasions I was recording a first look only to discover there was no file that night while dumping footage. I'm the kind of guy who's so paranoid about recording I constantly pull the recorder back out of the groom's pocket to triple-check that it's running. There's something off about this F2, maybe as simple as the LED incorrectly indicating that it's recording when it's actually not. I've also had poor battery life issues, despite using the computer to confirm the correct battery setting. I had it die in the middle of a catholic ceremony for me once with fresh batteries put in the night before (it did successfully close the file ... MoreI've used DR-10's for years, and was excited to upgrade to this Zoom F2 for weddings. I had it die in the middle of a catholic ceremony for me once with fresh batteries put in the night before (it did successfully close the file giving me 40 minutes of a clip at least). Zoom definitely should've added an LCD to this guy, both as a better confirmation of recording status and to be able to update settings on the fly. If you have Tascam DR-10's I'd just stick with them.

I bought 5 Zoom f2's this with a better lav mics like the Deity W Lav Pro gives me a great sound for the price. I was on the fence about the BT version but not having a way to monitor the sound was a no go for the price difference. I believe that this gives a better sounding option than a wireless system. The Rode wireless go IIis nice and you can record onto the transmitter and monitor the sound at the same time. But after listening to both the sound of the zoom was the winner for me.I was never going to use the mic that came with the zoom F2 from the start. The audio in the camera is for scratch only. The downside to the zoom f2 is I can't monitor it as I record but the boom mic is always monitored to assure good sound is there for the editing. After hiding the lav I have the person move around to make sure that the clothing isn't making a sound on the mic itself by monitoring the zoom before concealment on the person, and tell the if you feel a change in the mic position to let use know and we will reattach it.Pros. 32 bit Ease of use Small size No wireless drop off.Cons. No way of monitoring unless you connect it to a wireless system the mic that comes with it could be better. The mic that comes with the zoom will work fine for most people.

Works great for solo vlogging
1 December 2022

Not having to worry about my audio levels has increased my production capability many times over. I wish there was a wireless version for in-camera sync vs post production synchronization, but the small amount of time it takes to sync in Premiere is way less than needing to reshoot for blown audio. Adjusting the gain in post is super easy and still comes out clean. The F2 desktop software is easy to use. My only complaint is the windjammer isn't super-great at staying on the mic. It's fine once the mic is in place, but everything up to that point requires a great deal of care to not lose it. I'd love to see this unit upgraded with a small digital display for actual battery life and recording time remaining, but even without those I'd buy it again if needed.

did not work
11 December 2022

I had bought the zoom because I needed another recorder as a backup. but when I open it up for the first time to try to record with it. it would not record. I try to to do an update on it base off the zoom website and it got stuck and would not update. I have been busy working so I did not open the box when I got it so now I have a record that I cant return. it was a waste of money and all it is now is a paper weight.

disappointed

Disappointed, will likely returnI have other Zoom products that I really like, but they just can’t seem to get it right with this type of product. The F-1 was a huge disappointment (bulky, many design flaws), so I returned that. I was excited to see the F-2 announcement and I figured that Zoom would have learned their lesson, but that does not seem to be the case. Rather than using the standard “ME-2 clone” lapel mic like others do, they went with what seems to be their own mic and connector that simply does not work. It cuts out, pops, and for this purpose (usually cramming this into someone’s pocket, or under clothes) it’s unusable. MAYBE, if you had this on a clip on the outside of your talent and they never brushed up against it or touched it, it might work, ... MoreDisappointed, will likely returnI have other Zoom products that I really like, but they just can’t seem to get it right with this type of product. Speaking of the clip, it’s very tight and again, basically unusable for it’s intended purpose as It feels like the case will crack if you try to use it on a thick leather belt. I have no problem with the sound of the unit, and I was able to link it via Blue Tooth to my phone. Please understand that you are NOT ABLE TO MONITOR AUDIO from the phone which is what I wanted it for. I know that nothing else in this price range does that either, but I was expecting a breakthrough and didn’t get it.
