I heard all the hype about the show, and was unsurprised to find the tv series not so spectacular... Usually if everybody likes something, it's not good. To appeal to the average, you must alienate the discerning, and the show was no exception. I came across the first book in the series at a book sale for .25 cents, so I gave it a read...and loved it. I'm now into the second, and it's just as good! I'm a fan of Tolkien, and I think it's fair to say that Martin is in the same league. This is a well written, well thought out history of a fantasy realm, populated by peoples often paralleling our present planet. The nomadic Dothraki with their Khal (suggests the Khalif of Islamic history), the Caucasian, bearded Northmen (Anglo warriors of old)- this is a fantasy world ... The story quickly immerses you in this world of Martin's making, with rich detail and masterful writing. This collection of novels is wonderful, and will surely stand as a classic work of fiction. I find myself dreading to finish, this is one story you don't want to reach the conclusion of. Alas, it must end, as all tales do!

The books covers look really nice. The text isn't too small and the paper isn't too thin, which I was a little worried about. Only problem is the case is tearing a little in all 4 corners and the first book A Game of Thrones has a rip in the back cover.

I love this series! I feel like it has the perfect balance of character development, plot, and sense of adventure. Don't let the GOT haters make you think it's all about rated R inappropriateness because it is a lot more complex than that.Anyways, I ordered the books because I came across the HBO series by accident and binged watched it to the last season (waiting for the last season to start in July). I ordered these books without paying attention to the reviews. Shame on me. These books are very small in size, yet very thick in pages. Horribly combination. The print is so small, you have to have the right lighting to not get a headache. I always end up losing my page. Also, the books come in a little GOT series holder box thing that you can keep them in. I've ... MoreI love this series! Great series... try a different size in books though.

The books start out with maps so that you can get a better understanding of the locations. If you watched the show and are a fan, these books are a must read. Although many things are the same, so much more details are given that you wouldn't know without reading the books. You'll learn more about the characters such as their true ages. You'll learn more about everything. It's just way too much to list. Read these. You'll only wish you had read them sooner. I can't say enough good things about this author. He's a legend. The books are really long but that's just because it's such a detailed story, one that took five books to tell. They are great!!! You'll be hooked from the beginning.
Got the product and it’s in good condition the only issue is that it is NOT the paperback I thought it would be... this set is of the mass market GOT books, not regular paperback. The only difference is the mass market is smaller book sizes. I’m was initially annoyed but I can deal with it since I have pretty small hands and can handle the more compressed text. I’m just bothered that no where does it say that this set is the mass market box set... also this mass market set is actually pricier than compared to the other mass market sets available... the only reason I will be giving this product 3 stars is because the shipping was quick and the product came undamaged. Also because while not the GoT bookset I thought it was.... I did get a GoT bookset
I purchased the box set for my girl after she saw my bookshelf and was so excited about wanting to read them, having watched the show. She was moved by my thoughtfulness and I read to her at night now. She's wonderful and it's been a lovely bonding experience.
Currently reading the first book. I watched the HBO series before reading which I feel helps with keeping track of all the different characters. So far I see that the TV series stuck very close to the books. There are small differences in the book that I enjoy much more than the TV series. I have heard from others that there is more magic in the books than the TV series and I am very excited to get to that point in the books.
Good: The characters are human, with flaws AND redeeming qualities. Their self-conflicts are as much an influence in their lives as the conflicts with their families and enemies. The writing is very descriptive, letting you live among them.Bad: The characters are revealed in their own chapters, which sometimes makes the stories disjointed and hard to follow. The first book is by far the best, with the following books more and more diluted. The ugly: None of it. It was all worth the read!
I first read the Game of Thrones set before the HBO series began. I found the first four noviels in the local library and tore through them non-stop. I waited for years for the fifth book and eventually heard about it after HBO picked it up. But the other life intervened and the bloom was past and I never picked it up. Recently we bought the first six seasons and again tore through this fascinating epic. Since we don't get HBO, we now sit waiting -- and I thought, what a good time to re-read the books. eBay to the rescue! Saved a bundle and got the set in perfect new condition. I had actually started re-watching the HBO series (to help with the semi-withdrawal) when I realized that now is the time to re-read the books first. What a great decision that has proved to ... I had actually started re-watching the HBO series (to help with the semi-withdrawal) when I realized that now is the time to re-read the books first. What a great decision that has proved to be!! The Game of a Thrones is a big, sprawling epic and, for me at least, it was difficult on first read to keep all the characters, settings and stories straight. Having seen the series, the characters are now more vivid, more full of life and fit so well with the novels -- that is a rather rare experience. Having faces to put with the characters, in this case, actually helps. And even the few mismatched descriptions (most are spot-on!) don't bother the narrative. Would I feel the same if this weremy first read having seen the HBO series first? I'm not sure, but I do find it immensely satisfying and VERY "immersive" to have the previous reading as well as the series to draw on to support my current life with the Song of Fire and Ice. Regardless, first read, second or even more, I can only recommend these books -- among the best of fantasy ever written.
this is a gift from my son for Christmas. I had already watched the series on HBO but my husband had not. He has been watching the cd recordings and asking me questions about what he is watching. it seems as if this set is not exactly like the series and that a lot of it has been skipped. It is very disjointed. it goes from one cd to the next with a lot of content missing. this is true for all seasons. one example is where the dragon queen goes into the fire with the eggs and comes out with 3 dragons and not burned. the fight where the mountain is killed, does not show but next cd shows the imp on the run for killing the king. nothing shown for any of that.
