I had a pair of ebay cheapies that gave up the ghost on me a few weeks ago.I had often thought about buying some Acaias but as the cheapies were working fine I couldn't really justify it.I've had these now for around 3 or 4 weeks and I am still getting to know them. They are probably not as intuitive as I had hoped but that could just be me and I might just need some more time with them. The quality is definitely there and you feel it when you compare them with the cheaper ones. All up no regrets and a purchase that should last a good number of years.

Upgraded to the Acaia 2021 model from a Timemore Black Mirror. Really like the responsiveness of the Acaia and the auto-tare, auto-time mode. These modes made grinding coffee and pulling the shot way more accurate and helped understand another aspect of espresso (flow)It's definitely annoying having to cycle through 5-6 different modes just to get to the two I actually care about, and I feel like the double tap to power off should be more forgiving of the delay between taps.Otherwise, definitely recommend this if you have a few hundred burning a hole in your pocket and want a well-built, cool, new toy.

It is overly complicated to use. I ended up returning it and going back to my straightforward cheap scale. I’m still not sure what benefit you get from a flow-rate flickering readout. The auto tare is nice for some measurements, like when you put the cup on the scale. But the auto tare can get in the way for other measurements, like when trying to weigh your portafilter before grind and after grind. In order to do it, you need to switch between modes, which isn’t very straightforward.

It’s fine. The smart features aren’t that useful based on how clive coffee’s espresso course taught me how to pull a shot. The iPhone app is comically bad too.So, basically, this is a really nice, overpriced “dumb” scale that may improve with software/firmware updates. That said, it’s a convenient size for my espresso machine but not great for using with a portafilter so ironically I still use the old scale I was trying to replace for half of my workflow. To make matters worse, y’all emailed me within a month of going all-in on Clive Coffee saying you were giving away this scale with the purchase of an espresso machine (it might have required the purchase of a grinder too but either way I would have qualified). That’s awesome but don’t email someone about a deal ... MoreIt’s fine. The smart features aren’t that useful based on how clive coffee’s espresso course taught me how to pull a shot. That’s awesome but don’t email someone about a deal they literally JUST missed out on by 2-3 weeks. Like, I’m not going to ask to retroactively get the deal but don’t tell me about it! Literally gave me a buyers remorse completely unnecessarily.
After extensive research, I decided to get the Lunar which appears to be somewhat of an industry standard for coffee-nerds.Overall, the unboxing experience of the Lunar is akin to what you experience with an iPhone.I love the auto-tare, and auto-timer function - my default setting. This allows me to focus on other things [like checking the flow through the ***** portafilter] without having to worry about fiddling around with a seperate timer. The Lunar is small and hence can fit in the narrow space between cup and drip tray of home espresso machines - some espresso machine brands even sell modified drip trays to fit the Lunar flush with the drip tray surface, but I do not think I will require this. The scales feel robust, though I would hate to see them dropped on ... MoreAfter extensive research, I decided to get the Lunar which appears to be somewhat of an industry standard for coffee-nerds.Overall, the unboxing experience of the Lunar is akin to what you experience with an iPhone.I love the auto-tare, and auto-timer function - my default setting. Interestingly, the Lunar comes with two sets of stripe stickers, one "non-slip" [which I attached] and the other "friction reduction” [for the daredevils amongst you!].Also included is a rubber mat which can be placed beneath the scales when placed on the drip tray to prevent unintended sliding movement.I also love the addition of a 100g calibration weight in the box, which might come in handy after the scales have seen some wear and tear…After almost a week of use, I have no idea how much longer the USB rechargeable battery is going to last before a re-charge is required. At this stage, I am not concerned about this. All in all, not a purchase I have come to regret at this stage. For its price, it will have to last for many many years...
Fantastic user experience with the Acaia Lunar Scales. A huge upgrade from what I have been using. So much faster and more responsive updating weight, quality build with a solid feel and changing from mode to mode is a breeze. The flow rate indicator is a great feature for me and am learning more about my shots already. The silicon cover being able to turn over and be used as a stand so the portafilter handle stays off the bench is clever too as the scales are too small to allow this otherwise!
The scale started having problems with "Tare Drift" while in weigh only mode #1. I sent a video to Acaia of problematic behavior, and they commented that it was very strange and were appreciative of the detailed video. Acaia happily emailed me a shipping label and they are looking at it now.Good thing for me, I also have the newer 2021 Acaia with USB-C, which is working perfectly. Normally, I use the Micro USB scale for only weighing the coffee into the portafilter, and the USB-C scale for espresso out only. On each scale I have turned off all the other un-used measuring functions, so I do not have to scroll thru them. This is done in settings.I gave the Micro USB scale a "Good" only rating, because the Acaia Lunar is really expensive, and I feel like is should ... MoreThe scale started having problems with "Tare Drift" while in weigh only mode #1. I purchased it on: January 25, 2022.If Acaia can get it working properly, send it back and provide at least a year of trouble-free service, I'll consider revising my review. At the end of the day, it seems likely to me that it is the best overall coffee scale available, by a mile. Acaia Tech support is first class also.
Understand one thing, you're reading this review because this scale has been on your mind, in your dreams, and popping up everywhere you turn. Quit debating and JUST BUY THE SCALE!!! You wouldn't be here reading my ramblings if you weren't interested.... LOLNow that's out of the way, on to the scale. Well, it's awesome! I've used cheap scales from a big online retailer, and from the moment I started using the Acaia Lunar I've been wowed. First thing I did was kick myself for using the cheap scales so long. It was incredible how responsive the Lunar was from jump street. Like BAM, let's start counting!!!!The other very noticeable distinction is the build quality, it's SOLID!!! We all know the espresso process has potential to be a bit less than 'tidy' at times. ... MoreUnderstand one thing, you're reading this review because this scale has been on your mind, in your dreams, and popping up everywhere you turn. We all know the espresso process has potential to be a bit less than 'tidy' at times. It's reassuring to know the Lunar is built to withstand those times when things don't go as planned. It's easy to overlook the key equipment needed to dial in the perfect shot. I can honestly say my workflow and process would not be what it is without the Lunar. I know it can be a debate when you see all these 'budget' or other scales all over the web. Trust me, spend the money! (buy once, cry once)Again, I debated whether or not this scale would be worth it. Rest assured my friends, IT IS!!!!! I'm completely satisfied with everything the Lunar has to offer! And let's not forget our friends at Clive.... If you have ANY questions whatsoever, don't hesitate to reach out to them! Clive has the absolute BEST customer service out there and they put the customer first! They will listen to your needs/wants and point you in the direction that suits YOUR needs!!! Highest of praise for the Clive Team! THANK YOU!!!!
Just replaced a dead espresso machine. New one included this little gem. I find the auto tare feature very easy to use. It has shown me the huge difference that tamping pressure differences makes. Also, going from a set time to a set shot mass, not volume, has my shots much better and more consistent.Am going to switch to the auto tare/auto shot timer mode so I don’t have to account for pre flow time. Great little gadget. Expensive, but then most good things in life are.
You probably don't need this scale. I purchased this knowing that it had features that were more robust than what I currently use for home espresso making. But I figured that the scale would work well and that those additional features might become useful over time as my skills grow and I experiment more. I regret the purchase. This scale is exceptionally fiddly to use. Acaia has decided to sacrifice usability for elegance in design. It looks great, but would be a million times more useful with actual buttons to do things like tare, switch modes, start the timer, etc. I generally feel like I am fighting with this thing as I use it and end up switching to modes that I don't want to be in as often as I end up doing things like starting the timer, turning it off, etc. ... MoreYou probably don't need this scale. But before you purchase it, I strongly advise considering whether its features will really do more for you than scales that cost a third of the price. If not, you're buying a pretty thing that is a pain to use.
