The AKG C5 is a great microphone. I wanted a condenser for my home studio and it came down to this or an Shure 87. I've always loved and owned AKG mics, so I bought this, along with a Presonus tube preamp. I was pleased, but not blown away with the studio performance, but I simply may not have not have mastered the preamp thing. Then, I took the mic out live, where some seasoned vocalists and and a quality live soundman all asked, "what's that mic! It's the best I've ever heard!" I have performed in some nice venues, with some very nice gear as an opening act. The C5 is easily the best live vocal mic I have used or heard outside of a major concert. And compared to the price of a great guitar or keyboard, a few hundred bucks is a steal.

I bought this mic at Guitar Center about a year ago. I bought it for my Wife to do vocals. I have since had the opportunity to use this mic in many recording and stage scenarios. It seem to be good for nearly everything. I really keep being amazed by how well it works. I use it for guitar, vocals, drums, and anything really accept for bass drums. On stage it is extremely sensitive and the feedback rejection is amazing it is hard to believe this is a condenser mic because you never have any of the feedback issues with this that you do with so many of the sdc mics out there. I never expected to be this fond of this mic when I purchased it, and it took me a lot of time to get it through my thick head that it is so versatile, since it is designed for stage vocals. ... I was blown away by the detail and sound quality the AKG C5 delivers in a live band setting. I was worried that it would pick up too much background noise because it is a condenser microphone and has a cardioid polar pattern, but those were not issues at all. The clarity and detail is stunning and it really brought the vocals to front of the mix. Be aware there is a small plastic disc that clips to the diaphragm internally under the grill which shapes the frequency response to accentuate high frequencies. I removed it, as I don't believe it is necessary and I can add or take away what I need with board EQ. Normally I stick to dynamic mics for live stage use, but the AKG C5 is a game changer.
Great mic!
Bought my new mic about a week ago. Took some getting used to as the sound is much more clear and cuts through the other sounds of the instruments/voices. Felt like I had to 'push' my voice and within a half hour of the show, had much vocal fatigue. Also, lost the comfort level of the high notes. Was really pulling back on them. Then, my band mates suggested taking out the gold 'cap' inside the mic head (sorry, don't know proper name) and WOW! What a difference! I didn't have to 'push' my voice, and I had total control of the high notes again. Yea!! I'm in love with the mic after that minor fix. Who knew?!
Nice addition to my PA without breaking the bank it Looks good on stage and make my singer sound as good as she really is, it feels good in your hand has a nice balance. The AKG logo makes a nice refrance point to keep the pattern in line and tell you which end is up so far I love this thing but the Bag! I just can't get past how cheap and flimsy that is to be in the same box!I have a great mic and now I need to get a safe place to store it.I have a pair of D1000s that have been through the test of time, after 15 years of hard use and some blatant abuse I had a short in one that took all of 10 min to fix and they sound as good today as they did then, they are not vocal mikes but will do the job in a pinch. that being said I purchased the C5 for our lead vocalist ... I have only had it for a week but I expect it will be around a long time to come based on my D1000s longevity. The bag it comes with is junk, the zipper broke the first time I zipped it so get a case or bag to protect your investment. First impression was this is a quality product, well built and meant to last. But what about the sound you say? The one word I would use to describe it is WOW! This Mic Rocks, bringing out nuances in the vocals you would only expect to get in the studio and it does it on a noisy stage. Gain before feedback is very good if the EQ is correct and if it is not your sound will suffer, this thing has a narrow sweet spot, try to fatten it up it turns to mud quickly, try to brighten it and it squeals like "Babe" on an electric fence, but when you hit that sweet spot the sound is stellar and it needs nothing. proximity effects are smooth and predictable with good mic presence this will make your vocals shine.Ok I didn't rate the cheep bag just the Mic I would give the bag a negative 5Ok it's way cheaper than a bata 87 and the sound is on par or a little better but the bag? Really? come on guys you take this piece of working art and store it in that flimsy thin wish I had a bag bag.just pony up and make a little box with some foam like my D1000s came in, and yes after 15 years I still use those boxes with the help of some Gaffing tape.
Used it once on a heavy metal band. The vocals DID cut through the mix, even with 2 heavy distorted guitars, the voclas were clear and warm. Not much Eq was need on with mic. A good mic for any metal band. Just back down on the hi freq. a little, don't need muchEq at all. I compare it a KSM9 Shure which over twice the price. As a good feel to it as well, good balanced weight.
I am the lead vocalist in an alternative rock band. In all the years I've spent trying mics and getting frustrated with them, I have never heard anything compared to the C5. With thumping drums and loud strings, I could never hear myself clearly until now. TRY IT...you won't be dissapointed.
