The AKG D5 sound more open, very similar to condenser microphone. Better high frequency and also more open to sibilance. On stage the supercardioid pattern nicely prevent feedback. in studio i will suggest a pop-filter. Great improvement to any mic lockers. and by experience; hard to get back to sm58 after trying a D5.

A shootout between the AKG D5 and Sennheiser e935

Overall:So, I have been sold on Sennheiser stage microphones for quite a while now... However, I bought an AKG D5 here at zZ for a holiday discounted price, and wow! This supercardioid AKG D5 is crystal clear compared to the cardioid Sinnhieser e935. I know that I’m comparing apples to oranges here, but the supercardioid like the AKG D5 is supposed to be a less clear mic, especially for a baritone because of the bass roll off thing... Or at least that’s what I’ve read? Anyhow, I’m sold on the AKG microphones now for sure! So, If this review helps this mic get into the hands of someone that can appreciate it like myself? AKG D5 Mic. the new D190

If you liked the old D190, you will be happy with this new one. The cardoid pattern is nearly as tight as a D190, great for bringing bad room acoustics ( Churches and long low ceiling halls ) under control. It still has that flat bass response way down below where most dynamics fade away. It is a little larger and, being very dark coloured, generally more visually intrusive than the old silver-gold D190. For the price, a very good buy. I am using one in preference to a SM58 in a reverberant setting where I cant get closer than about 300mm to the performer's mouth. Enough said.

Probably the best mic I have used in over 50 years of performing and I have used Shure, Sennheiser, Carvin, Audio Technica, etc. I have used AKG in the past and would definitely recommend them. The clarity is unsurpassed. The low end is so mellow and the mids and highs really put you out front. This mic can also be used without a wind screen. They take abuse and keep on ticking. Well made and can't beat the design. For the money, can't be topped. No cons here. This is my go to mic because I know it will be my friend. The rest of them came stay in my bag. B&H is the best to do business with. This mic was delivered in less than two days using regular delivery. Unbelievable service. If you want it fast, go B&H. Good sounding mic

Clearer sound than the SM58. TIght super-cardioid pattern rejects sound in a studio that isn't soundproofed well. You can get some minor proximity effect if you're really close. I have the e935 which is cardioid so I switch between the two. They're very similar but the D5 has a more intimate sound. More bassy but not as transparent. I prefer the D5 for live performances. The e935 for studio recordings when I can't use a condenser mic because there's too much sound getting picked up. Unfortunately, I don't have the e945 which has a similar cardioid pattern. But the e935 which cost me two times as the D5 is hard to distinguish in a blind test. I've always thought that the SM58 sound muddy and listening to the D5 that even makes more sense. The D5 suits a man's voice ... MoreClearer sound than the SM58. TIght super-cardioid pattern rejects sound in a studio that isn't soundproofed well. So if you're looking for a super-cardiod mic that's a step above the rest go for it you won't be disappointed. The D5 has earned a place in my mic arsenal. Great deal.

Great mic for recording. Use pop filter or windscreen to prevent plosives
7 November 2014

The AKG D5 is an excellent choice for a dynamic microphone for RECORDING but I would have to disagree with using it for live purposes. It has one problem I don't like. The plosives...the plosives will really urk you with this microphone. My pop filter fixed this problem though. However, most people don't have pop filters on mics for live purposes (although they really should make mini pop filters that can hook on to stage mics). That is why I say it is more useful as a home studio microphone than a live recording microphone. I used a focusrite 2i2 usb interface with it. As you may know, focusrite is known for good sounding pre-amps so that may have had something to do with the sound I got. Vocals are crystal clear. As you may know, focusrite is known for good sounding pre-amps so that may have had something to do with the sound I got. Vocals are crystal clear. Bright enough to cut through the mix but not overly bright or harsh like the Rode NT1A condenser microphone. For those of you who think that you can't record with a dynamic microphone, you are sadly mistaken. For those of you that think that the frequency response of a dynamic microphone can't be as good as a condenser or a ribbon microphone, this microphone will give you a heck of a suprise. The frequency response on this microphone is 70hz-20,000hz. Below 70hz on vocals is usually low rumbly muddy noises that you don't want anyway. This microphone is very comparable to the frequency response of a condenser or ribbon microphone. It may not SOUND quite the same as a condenser or ribbon microphone but hey...THAT'S THE POINT. It is perfectly fine for recording. Just offers a DIFFERENT sound. A very good sound if I do say so myself. A sound that some artist may actually PREFER. That is why it is absolutely critical to have a mixture of different types of microphones in your studio, dynamic microphones especially. Also, for very loud artist, the sound pressure levels on these things are amazing and the case is the same with this microphone. If you have a powerful singer or loud artist or somebody that does a genre that involves screaming and hollering...be smart. Get some dynamic microphones. GOOD ones. This microphone may not be all that expensive but the sound of it would fool you. Great budget dynamic mic! You should get one of these. One small thing that is worth mentioning is that this microphone is gain hungry like a lot of dynamic microphones. Do yourself a favor. Get yourself a Triton Fethead or a Cloudlifter to boost the amount of clean gain on this thing when using it with whatever mic pre amp you have (that is including usb interfaces too because those also have built in mic pre amps for those who are unaware).

I have had a chance to use two of these for my band, and for live shows where I run sound. The shows range from jams with semi-pro guys and amatures, to touring national and major acts in an intimate venue.I asked several of the touring acts how they thought the mics preformed at the end of several shows, and got favorable comments back from all. I have used them with both male and female singers and all responded favorably. I have had NO difficulty getting anyone into and over the mix out front, or in the monitors.I had encountered frequency issues with a couple of other mics. I have others that I use, but these are saved and favored for the prime singers unless they have their own mic, or wasn something different.I rated at 4 stars because there are mics of ... MoreI have had a chance to use two of these for my band, and for live shows where I run sound. Product great; service, beyond expectations!

The product was exactly what I was hoping for, a great entry level microphone. However, I only paid full price for said microphone, but the package also included a great XLR cable, as well as a really nice heavy duty mic stand, and little mic foam filter for free. The shipping was also free, and arrived the NEXT morning. I didn't realize the package would get here that fast. Thanks B&H.

Vocals cut through the mix
9 December 2017

I have used the SM58 and E935 for years and they worked well for me. We added a female vocalist and the background and lead vocal just did not mesh. Over Thanksgiving a sale on this mic was to much to pass up. We decided to buy three mics and see if we could balance out our sound. This has really worked out well and reduced feedback as well. Easy to eq and we all blend together. Nice crisp cut through of the mix and the supercardiod sounds out front when it needs to or if you back off you sit in the background nicely. Great mic with a fuller range for a female vocalist and the higher range of male singers. It has really strengthened our group vocals.

WOW!!!
25 September 2016

So I purchased this because my SM58, the gold standard mike, wasn't cutting through the mix at rehearsal. I just figured for live performance, a SM57 or 58 was the top of the peg and that I would need to work with EQ units or a Sonic Maximizer to get the vocals to cut through. After numerous rehearsals trying to fix the problem, of the vocals cutting through, I finally started to investigate microphones. Again, I was using one of the top industry standard microphones live. I know for recording there are so many options, but you are in a controlled environment, but live your options are more limited, especially when you take in to effect changes in venues. I read up on microphones and started to read the reviews on MF. I stumbled across the AKG D5. Now I've always been a fan of AKG microphones and the C414 is my favorite mike for lead vocals in studio. So when I read the reviews of the D5, I figured why not try it and see. All I can say is WOW!!! To say the difference was dramatic is an understatement. Not only did the highs cut through with clarity and punch, but so did the lows and I was able to push the volume without feedback. I had the D5 at levels way higher than a SM58 and not only did the vocals cut through the mix like a hot knife through butter, but no feedback. I read how the pins on the mike may be a problem and it may not be as durable as other microphones. I can't speak to that as I've only had the mike for a short period of time. All I can say is this is flat out the best live vocal mike I have ever heard in its price range and anyone who is having a problem with vocals cutting through a live band mix should at least try it. Not only was I totally blown away, which is not an easy thing for me as I am a total gear nut, but everyone else in the band noticed the difference immediately. Again, all I can say is WOW!!!
