They're about $50 cheaper than the ones I bought 14 years ago but the quality just isn't there anymore. At this price point I would recommend the Grado SR60 as the best value, with the Sony MDR series a close runner up.

Afterwards, I read several hundred reviews (good and bad) on the narrowed down field of the 8 pair that had the features I wanted, were in my price range, and were rated toward the upper end of the scale. Then I ordered. Rather, I should say I settled. The AKG K240's were on backorder, so I went with my 2nd choice. (Always go with your gut.) Now I was back at the beginning so I did what I should have done in the first place and researched headphones that were highly recommended for running with a guitar amp. Of 11 different "best of" lists, the AKG K240's landed on 10 of those lists.I received my AKG K240's this afternoon and here I sit writing a review. WOW!!! If you're looking for a flat response monitoring headphone, check these out! The other pair I bought and returned cost more than these, so if your budget is tight, these fit nicely. The other pair seemed to add bass, so what I was hearing wasn't a good representation of my final sound. If you're wanting a DJ-style headphone, these aren't for you. If you're wanting bass-enhanced headphones, these aren't for you. If what you want is an affordable, genuine listen headphone, buy these today! You won't regret your purchase.

I thought those were bad because they'd constantly get tangled up in themselves, and other cables would get stuck in the curls. But they are not nearly as frustrating as these which get tangled up in EVERY. THING.The sound is good, and I can't blame them for the proprietary cord -- that's my fault for not paying closer attention. But if I knew how much trouble the cord was going to be I would have bought something else. It's also worth mentioning that although the sound is good, these hurt your ears like hell after barely any usage, especially if you're wearing glasses. No joke, the other day I put them on with glasses and within 10 - 20 minutes I could feel the dull pain around my ears.I'm searching for more options for the cable but it doesn't seem like there's anything shorter than a 4ft cord. I believe the ones that come with it are 6, so not too much of a different. It's ALSO worth noting that I don't use these exclusively for studio work, but for anything on my computer that uses sound, including gaming. So my best bet at this point would be to just invest in some gaming headphones and keep these plugged into my interface. If $50 is your budget though, these are a no brainer. If you're in the $100 range I'd check out Sennheiser HD280s. I bought a pair of those in 2011 and they lasted me all the way up until 2019, when the foam finally started coming off of the ears, and this year I decided it was time for a new pair. If you get these and cord becomes an issue there are management accessories you can buy to wrap it up. But if this is your only pair and you're switching between devices like I am all the time, then these can become a pain to work with.

Great For Mixing
29 April 2024

Very pleased with my K240’s. Have really helped with getting better mixes. Great bang for your buck in a studio headphone. Not sure why some reviews complain about lack of bass. They are a studio model, meant to be flat, to achieve a balanced mix that will sound good on other platforms, and they do that very well. If you’re looking for just a listening headphone, and want heavy bass, research before buying.Highly recommend these for recording/mixing.

Great headphones. Second pair.
11 November 2023

Purchased these to replace an older pair. Really like being able to replace the whole cable instead of having to solder a new end on them. These will mainly be used to mix in my home project studio. Great low end, maybe it's the open design. The mini TRS to quarter adapter is very handy to use both in the studio and with iPhones and ipads.

Great quality cans, but the cord feels cheap and fragile
23 September 2020

Sound:The sound quality on these is great. I'm coming over from some Sennheiser 280hd I had been using since 2011, but those finally broke down (still sounded good but the plug got bent and the foam was coming off). These sound just as good, if not better. Very accurate to the sound original sound being produced and I don't feel like there's any extra low, mids or highs being pumped in, which makes them perfect for mixing.Features:The most frustrating part is how thin the cord is, and it's a specialized cord. My friend got a pair of AKGs that has a 1/4in. plug, so if something happens he can replace it pretty easily. I wouldn't mind the length if it was a thicker cord. As it is the length combined with the thinness of the cord just makes it seem really fragile.Quality:The overall quality is really good. Honestly my only complaint is that cord. It's the only thing about these headphones that looks and feels cheap when compared to the product overall.Value:If you're on a budget looking for some good monitoring headphones, these are definitely a steal for the price. I think Sennheiser 280s are around $100, but, to my ear at least, there's not much difference in sound quality. Both are closed-back over ears, which really helps isolate an accurate sound for you. If I had to choose between the two I'd go with these.Manufacturer Support:I haven't had to deal with customer service, so I have no opinion on that.Overall:Great quality cans, but the cord feels cheap and fragile

Having worked in the music/recording industry in the '80's I remembered AKG's as being quality equipment. Well the bottom line is the K240S more than meet my expectations at this stage for my requirements. They arrived this arvo and currently being put thru their paces to music I record for myself- very eclectic in taste- blues at the moment, mixed files. Love listening to different recordings and how the 240's deliver, they are makin' me smile- superb vocals . Big thankyou-Belfield Music

The AKG K240 Sextett Is A Classic That Has Stood The Test Of Time
23 July 2018

This is my first pair of AKG headphones. I was going to purchase a modern pair when I read a review about the K240 Sextett which was so impressive, that I decided to see if I could locate a pair. Having found a used pair on E-bay for a very reasonable price ($79 shipped), decided to purchase them, since I was interested in seeing how well these cans would match up with some of my headphone amplifiers; including a Schiit Magni 3 and Little Dot MK2. First off, the physical condition of these roughly forty year headphones is quite good. And they are well constructed. Moreover, the leather ear pads appear to be original, yet, are in very good shape as are the headphones themselves; the only thing needing replacement here being the tiny rubber bands that allow for the adjustment of the AKGs. A nominal expense. As for the sound, this is a headphone that concentrates on the midrange, and whose clarity here is remarkable. There were three versions of the K240S designated EP, MP and LP for early production, middle production and late production. The earlier K240S has 6 orange colored passive radiators per speaker, and the MP and LP models are said to have white colored passive radiators. The EP version is said to be the most desirable of the three because of its ability to produce strong bass, while the latter two versions are said to be a bit shy in bass. The other attributes of the K240S are said to be similar in all three versions. I am not certain how to distinguish between the latter two models, however, the K240S that I purchased does have white colored passive radiators so it would have to be either the MP or LP version of the K240S. As for my K240S I have noticed the following: The midrange is glorious. The bass of this particular K240S is, surprisingly, *not particularly subtle, while the treble, while good, can become a bit shrill with a solid state headphone amplifier like the Schiit Magni 3 (the Magni 3 has been called a giant slayer and for good reason, since it offers Hi-End audio performance and excellent construction for a pittance -$99). *Some reviewers have claimed that the EP version has excellent bass, while the MP and LP version were lacking in this area. I have used the Magni 3 with several newer headphones from Sony, Grado, Koss, and Sharkk, and found it to work quite well with them. In fact, the Magni 3 is so popular that Schiit is constantly trying to meet the demand for this little gem - which often results in a waiting time of as much three weeks from the time it's ordered on their Website to the time it's shipped. While the Magni 3 did not match up quite to my expectations with the K240S, I've found that the Little Dot MK2 - a singled ended triode design - and the K240S are the proverbial match made in heaven; there is a synergy between these two components which results in a wonderful outcome. The warmth of instruments and voices through this pairing is not only palpable, but it also allows for hours of listening without listener fatigue. Moreover, in spite of its 600 ohm impedance, the AKG K240S is easily driven to very loud levels by the Little Dot, which bespeaks how well these components complement one another. *Of course with headphones one must be very careful not to damage one's hearing, so it is easier to start off with the headphones at a lower volume, and then gradually increase to a volume which is comfortable for you. I could continue to wax poetic about these AKGs, however, that would take away time from my listening sessions and enjoyment of them. So in closing I can say this much: If you can find a pair of Sextetts that are in good shape and being sold at a reasonable price, you might want to consider purchasing them before someone else does. Check E-bay's listing of sold items by typing AKG K240 Sextett into the search area, in order to get an idea of what these headphones are selling for. This way you can get an idea of what they are worth based on their condition, before you decide to bid on or purchase a pair. Keep in mind that relative to other versions of the K240, the Sextett is fairly rare and really is a special piece of Hi-Fi gear that has stood the test of time.

Yes I would mix a whole album on these

Used to swear by Sony then realized they had a too much upper mids. Then I switched to Beyer, but they had a NOTCH in the upper mids! Finally settled on these and their more expensive sibling with the similar model number.Next to my Grados these are some of the most honest headphones I've used. They do not have cavernous low end or soaring eagle highs. They are flat.I find I can mix stuff using a decent converter and these phones and that translates well to playback on my car stereo, my laptop, my phone etc. It's a bad idea to think you can mix something on headphones sure. You may end up with phase issues, or low end issues you can only hear on real speakers, in a room. That said, these do the job in a pinch. If you want to track hip hop or R&B vocals ... MoreUsed to swear by Sony then realized they had a too much upper mids. Then I switched to Beyer, but they had a NOTCH in the upper mids! Finally settled on these and their more expensive sibling with the similar model number.Next to my Grados these are some of the most honest headphones I've used. They do not have cavernous low end or soaring eagle highs. They are open back, so hihat and snare will be picked up by the microphone too. Not a lot, but just enough to show up if you lean on a compressor to even out vocals and give them a bit more 'lips and teeth'.Another wonderful thing about these is that you can wear them for HOURS. They are not heavy, nor do they squeeze your brain out of your head. They also don't give me that sweaty itchy ear thing some do.Downsides;weak headphone amps won't do these justice. I often have to crank mine up to 75% or more to get reasonable level. They do not fold. After a year or two of use you may find the little foam piece inside coming loose. If you drop them a lot they may break. There are less flat headphones out there that are more durable, fold, and have sealed back. But honestly, I can't think of another pair I'd rather have at this price. You gotta spend 3-4 times the amount to get a better sounding phone.

great sound... if you fix it a bit

first, let me get it out of the way that I am by no means an audiophile, but I do appreciate good sound quality and so... that's my perspective. I got these and almost cried... I had never experienced music like that before. a wider sound stage, clarity, detail and sharpness, and overall just awesome... until you realize just how dead they sound. now, they are neutral... very very neutral, but unless that's what you want and you're dead set on, you're going to want to eq them. to describe them before the eq I would have to say they were, in a word, recessed. the vocals felt far away and like there was a sheet of paper or something separating you from them. the bass was almost non existent, and even instruments didn't have that "punch" that they normally do. so... I boosted the lower frequencies by about a decible, messed around with the mids a bit to get them sounding not super recessed and was able to bring a sense of life back to them. with the eq, they are the most detailed, best sounding headphones I have ever listened to. now, keep in mind I have never spent over $70 on a pair of headphones, and have primarily listened to wireless headphones up to this point, so it's not like someone who used to use a pair of sennheiser he-1's is saying that... but to me, someone who had never really listened to nice headphones before, they were great. bass: not a ton, but compared to what I am used to, lots of detail in the bass that is there mids: clear present and pretty darn good with the eq highs: good: not bad at all and not fatiguing to listen to at all build and comfort build: not great. pretty much all plastic and honestly feels like I could snap them pretty easily. BUT what can I say for $50? costs had to be cut somewhere comfort: headband is awesome! it does a great job of distributing the weight (which isn't that much due to the plastic build,) and the pads aren't the worst thing ever once they're broken in. overall, not terrible but by no means a super comfortable pair of headphones. conclusion: I would highly reccomend these to someone as their introduction to better audio, especially at the $50 I picked them up for. as long as you keep in mind that the sound isn't the most fun, especially out of the box, and the build isn't great... overall good product though!
