Last year around November, I purchased my first n5005 (serial number: 14572), it was my first and most satisfying purchase, people may argue with me that headphones do not need burn-in, but after I did burn in for a while, the bass was excellent and the vocal was kinda laybacked a bit compare to new n5005, which is superior & a relaxing IEM to listen with. And because of those reasons, I got myself another set of n5005. The serial number was 17XXX. The 17XXX batch seems like having a series of trouble (build quality and quality control), this n5005 have serious dental consonants in vocals compare to my 14572 n5005, cables were not as beautiful as the 14XXX batch, they are kinda matte finish compare to my 14XXX batch which is shiny and beautiful (both 3.5 & ... MoreLast year around November, I purchased my first n5005 (serial number: 14572), it was my first and most satisfying purchase, people may argue with me that headphones do not need burn-in, but after I did burn in for a while, the bass was excellent and the vocal was kinda laybacked a bit compare to new n5005, which is superior & a relaxing IEM to listen with. And because of those reasons, I got myself another set of n5005. This time the ceramic housing does not sit flush with the plastic housing, which caused two major problems, (1) when you put them on, you can feel the bottom of the IEM does not sit flush (imagine a thousand dollars IEM having these problems), (2) the back of the IEM having a small hole compare to the 14XXX batch. In terms of the sound quality of this 17053, I do not have enough time to burn-in before I quickly order a replacement, but I can clearly tell that this IEM has a better sound compare to the other 17XXX I was talking about, the vocal's dental consonants weren't as sharp as the 17XXX, the bass was better and the mid-high was much more clear compare to the 17XXX.I wish the replacement of my second n5005 can be much better.*Note: If you are looking for a PNC headphone/noise isolation, these are clearly not what you want to purchase because the noise isolation is completely bad...

Although the ergonomics were not the top notch as several others had pointed out, once the proper fit and ear tip choice were achieved, these IEMs sound amazing, especially with some PEQ tweaking (currently following oratory1990's setting for N5005). I personally am very fond of the so-called Harman curve, and it is a pure joy to listen to with proper DAC/AMP setup. The accessories are ample, and I am very satisfied with the quality of the cables. The deep brown-colored coiled cables are an absolute joy to behold as well. Bluetooth cable is quite a nice addition, however it is a bit counter-intuitive as it does not support hi-res codecs. But it is a nice addition for sure and serves the intended purpose. Bluetooth cable is quite a nice addition, however it is a bit counter-intuitive as it does not support hi-res codecs. But it is a nice addition for sure and serves the intended purpose. I think most of the people who decide to ditch N5005s are coming from the fact that the nozzle angle is a bit too peculiar, and that it is not the most comfortable IEMs, primarily because of the absurdly acute angle of the ear guide that produces pain after as little as 15 minutes of listening. There are workarounds of this, from simply switching the MCMX cable albeit expensive as N5005 uses a proprietary MCMX connection so you'd need a custom cable, to using a hair drier or one's fingers to gently straighten the ear guide a bit. After a bit of adjustment, the IEMs become very comfortable. But it took me a while to search for all this information on internet, and it required a bit of patience and perseverance so I understand people give out a negative review on this otherwise amazing IEM. It is very unfortunate that because of the nozzle angle, ear guide issue and consequent improper sealing of ear tips people give up on these without getting to hear what it can offer. People over the world have been trying some bizarre setups to make N5005 work, from putting one or two O-rings in between the nozzle and ear tips, so the tips can stay inside the ear canal deeper and better, to simply trying out a dozen of different ear tips hoping one of them can finally offer proper sealing and those juicy, tight lows, ample mids and clear highs with great resolution. I myself was fortunate that the default transparent Spinfit ear tips (L) worked well (although they do tend to come off with a bit of head turning and such). I also tried out at least 4 different ear tips (so far, Comply, Acoustune, Xelastec and default tips) but none of them provided better sealing or sound profile than the regular transparent Spinfits. I have also found out these Spinfits are also proprietary, so unless I find a third party ear tips that work par or better, I would have to ask AKG to sell some of these tips in case my current one fails later. Overall, I am very pleased that I have finally managed to make it work for me, but I also believe the glory N5005 deserved was overshadowed by the negatives that raised the entry bar for the majority of the people who purchased. I am sure AKG has learned a lesson or two during the past four years since its release, and will be looking forward to the next iteration of their reference IEMs in coming years. Please also note that I purchased N5005 on sale, so given that one can get it working on her/his ears, it is an absolute steal on the sale price. If you are considering this, then get ready to invest a bit of patience and time into it until you can make it work. These are definitely not for a faint heart.

I think, like with most thing, headphones are a matter of preference. I personally like the AKG sound, and have a few different models. I have the N40s, N90Qs and these, and I think they are all brilliant. The N40s if driver with a good DAC the sound is lovely. The N5005s are incredible, but if your budget does not stretch to these then the N40s are a great compromise. The packaging is nice, it comes with loads of different cables etc, I don't know how much you'd use the bluetooth cable as the sound quality changes significantly, still good but for the sake of having a cable you will get much more out of them, and if your spending this sort of money, you probably want the best. The sound is brilliant, the bass is fast and I personally think a deep as you need. I listen to a lot of drum and bass and these please my ears! The midrange is better on these than the N40s, vocals come through like the person is singing to you. The Highs are crisp and don't ever become harsh, which they can do on the N40s.The build quality: So I had an issue with the left ear, the dynamic driver blew, I contacted AKG and they replaced both earbuds and all the cables, great customer service!

When I saw these were 80% of list, I just ordered them. They came earlier than expected and undamaged. They sound really good. very good bass (not basshead bass, but very full with sub-bass). Mids and highs are very good as well which gives these really nice sound stage and imaging for an IEM. Two little quirks, the left bud had an issue with staying connected to the cable at first, seems good now.(MMCX connectors can be a bit fidgety) Had issues with getting a good seal with the stock tips. Had a set of foam tips and all is good. For 200.00, I'm very happy.
I am no fan of high bass but there is some problem with the bass wich is abnormally suppressed. The treble and mids are boosted. No spatial imaging. Any over the ear reference headphone (around its price range) does a better job. Jazz, orchestral, pop, cinematic - all sound artificially sharp with bass suppressed with the akg reference filter (came installed). As some reviewers mentioned, the cable connectors too difficult to switch the cables. Cosmetic build quality and packaging are all good and I don't care. No idea what so many 5 star reviews are for. I like to keep it and change the rating if it even sound like the inexpensibe hi-res headphones. AKG should also know that instead of delivering at the doorstep the partner shipping company left the box on the bush.
What can I say, it does what it says on the board. I could sit here and talk about tuning and build and ultimately preference, but at the end of the day these iems are absolutely stellar. An important note is that they are *reference* class iems, which means they have high detail retrieval. What does that entail? It means that unlike most *likeable* iems these will NOT mask mistakes you make as a mixer. A.K.A if you have a unbalanced mix that has sharp frequencies or overly loud instruments, you will feel the burn. Overall these iems are high class, and when appreciated with the right skill and music, shine.
I wanted to love everything about these headphones. Make no mistake, they sound amazing, and the ability to switch between wired and wireless connections is fantastic. However, I've faced several issues with this product and I think there are severe quality problems. Firstly, within the initial 6 months of ownership I had issues with the audio cutting out. I am extremely gentle with the cables so I was very surprised when it turned out to be a flaw with the wire close to the 3.5mm jack. AKG replaced the cable and it resolved my issue. Now a year later I am facing connection issues once again and this time it's a problem with the right headphone MCMX connector. Again, I am exceedingly careful and gentle with these headphones. Lastly, I am disappointed with the plastic casing - it has already chipped off on my left headphone. I would not recommend this product
Exceeded my expectations, particularly at the price I paid. The build quality of the cables, the case, and the buds is all top notch. But most importantly, the sound of these things is just incredible. I'm watching less tv and just sitting back and enjoying the same music I've listened to for years. It did sound thin and harsh when I first tried them, but once I got the right tips - boom. Still am fidgeting just a bit with ensuring the seal stays while wearing these for hours on end. But enjoying every minute that I do.I'm not an audiophile, so was a little reluctant to spend this much on earphones. But happy enough that I took the minute to actually write this review.
The sound quality of these IEMs is fantastic. I'm running these on the 3.5mm cable with a BTR5, using the reference filter. Comparing these to other Headphones ER4XR, SE525, ER2XR, FDX01 etc... They are better in almost every aspect. Better (thicker) bottom end, better (airy) treble extension. They do seem to get a bit sibilant at high volumes, but BA's sometimes do. The quality is top notch, just be delicate with the connections. Everything is quite small and could get damaged if you're abusive when swapping cables. The included cable has Bluetooth 4.1, that isn't very exciting but this was designed and released 4+years ago so it's too be expected. This is the best headset that I have ever tried. The sound detail and dynamic range is similar to my 7hz Timeless but AKG 5005 has more detailed horizontal resolution or soundstage. You can place the sounds more accurately and the lower base is more “pillowy”. The accessories are incredible too. I did have to get different tips though. The buds are pretty hard to position in the ear for optimal sound and it wasn’t working well with the included tips.I do have one complaint and that’s quality related. The volume control on the 3.5mm cable fell apart in the first week. The bottom cover came off and the tiny switch for iOS - Android fell out. I was lucky nothing went missing and I superglued the cover to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Kind of a black eye for a ... MoreThis is the best headset that I have ever tried.
