I've been through three pairs of the original Outroad. Perfect for my mix of road, gravel, grass and light trails. Very flexible with plenty of cushioning. The Outroad 2 feels nothing like the original. Very, very stiff in the forefoot and midfoot, with much stiffer cushioning. Also, the upper is a much thicker material, and there seems to be a more significant/stiffer heel counter in the Outroad 2. All combine to make this a poor fit for my needs. I'll keep trying to chase down new old stock of the original Outroad, rather than buying another pair of Outroad 2.

I had been wearing the Altra Timps for a while and loved them but can't get shoes with no padding in the tongue to work for me (Timp 4 and the first Outroad), so had to switch to Topo shoes. I tried the Outroad 2 and was happy to find they have gone back to padding in the tongue and the Outroad 2's are quite comfortable. I find the grip quite good, better than the Timp 4 and I have been using them as one of my main trail shoes. I wore them in a somewhat muddy 50km and they were great. I have been wearing the men's version of Altra shoes for a while, but I do find the women's Outroad 2 fits me better than the men's, my forefoot moves around a bit in the men's shoe but not in the women's. I really love these shoes. They're a good mix between a hardcore trail running shoe and my road shoes. In addition to these outroads I also have the Altra Lone Peak 6 and the outroads have a slightly narrower toe box (sill much wider than other brands) and these also feel about 1/2 size smaller than the Lone Peak (I wear a 10.5 lone peak and 11 in the Outroad and 11 in all other brands). The traction lugs on the Outroad are toned down slightly vs the lone peak but still more aggressive than road shoes. Where I run, I do about 2 miles on the road before getting to the dirt trailhead and don't mind running along the road.Under foot these feel great, there's a decent amount of padding it's not a minimalist shoe where you feel any uneven terrain, but there's enough ... I love the wider toe box and feel like my feet are not as compressed as they are in other shoes. With time I may just use these as my road shoes too.

Very disappointed in Altra. I have used these shoes occasionally since purchasing them in July 2023. In the 5 months of owning them I have put less than 130mi on these shoes and the lateral side of the right shoe has come apart.I contacted Altra's customer service team but was told this was 'normal wear and tear'.If this is the new normal for Altra I will be moving on from them with my next shoe purchases after many successful pairs previously. Avoid these shoes - they are very fragile. Probably time to avoid Altra as they no longer stand behind their products.
I made the switch to wide toe box, zero drop, barefoot shoes about a year ago. Absolutely love the fit an function of that style shoe, with the exception of almost no cushioning under foot. Thus, I was very excited to be chosen to receive my first pair of Altra shoes thru BZZAGENT. Altra is known for their zero drop, wide toe box designs, but with added cushioning! The shoes I received are the Outroad 2 model. Unfortunately, they fit about a full size too small, and the wide toe box is almost nonexistent. The Outroad 2 is of the slimmest design offered by Altra. The slim fit takes away nearly all of the wideness of the toe box, almost back to a regular athletic shoe.Between the shoe being way too short, and no wide toe box, needless to say I was very disappointed. ... Unwearable for me.Thus, I can only comment that the Outroad 2 runs quite small, and do not expect the usual wide toe box fit Altra is known for.Luckily, a local running shop let me trade the Outroad 2 for the Altra Lone Peak 7. True shoe bliss!
I got the Outroad 1s to use as an all-around, everyday walking shoe. I really liked them, but, as many other users noted, they fell apart too easily in certain places. So when the 2s came out, I was excited to give them a try. Unfortunately, they just don't fit me nearly as well. They feel super wide on me, despite being in the "slim" category, and I have a hard time getting my heels to lock down in the 2nd gen. This was never a problem with the 1st gen Outroads. As a point of comparison, I use the Provision 7s for running and those fit me great. Ironically, those are supposedly a wider fit, but they don't feel as wide on my feet as these Outroad 2s do.All in all, the Outroad 2s are fine, but I don't know that I'll go back for another round of them.
I've had several pairs of Altras and have been overall very happy with the brand as a whole. I recently picked up a pair of Outroads. I found that they seemed to run a half size small. No biggy. Moving up half a size made for a good fit. I have found the shoes to be very comfortable and sure footed; however, these shoes are essentially unwearable. I've got maybe a hundreds miles on them and they still squeak with every step. I have never had a pair of shoes as infuriating as these. Literally every step I take results in a loud squeak. Doesn't matter if I'm on ground, gravel, rock, road, indoor surface. Every step there is a squeak. I even applied talcum powder beneath the insert and flipped the inserts upside down (swapping R&L) and a too lol the squeaking persists. ... The Outroad 1 seemed much better. Version 2 seems to have added stiffness and bulk in the forefoot, presumably to add more insulation from rocks/roots on "light trails"? I would love to see a response from Altra on this point. If that's indeed true. If so, this seems unnecessary. For light trails version 1 seemed fine and this change makes it feel like I'm runing in sand or on a treadmill set at a 2% incline. Running in these is like having the parking break on. They do not work for me at all. But a great walking shoe!
This is my 6th pair of Altras since finding the brand a couple of years ago. This model I tried because of the clearance price. Honestly I was disappointed. The shoe hurt me feet even after wearing in. They feel like the slope or rock outward and I have to make an effort to role my foot I ward. It's annoying and uncomfortable. Also the tops at the bend of the toe is already ripling after inly 2 months. All the other pairs I have loved and have not had these issues with.
This is the shoe I love to hate. Like so many others have mentioned, these shoes are shorter than any other Altra in an equivalent size (including other slim fit models). Nonetheless, I run 1000-1200 miles a year (both trail and road) and the Outroad 1 was the shoe I put the most mileage on over the last 8 months.I run Riveras and Vanishes (both slim foot shape) and have no issues with the length, but the Outroad 1's are the only shoes that have ever caused me to lose a toenail (out of dozens and dozens of running shoes). I was truly hoping the second generation would fix this (especially since there was so much feedback) but the Outroad 2 has the same issue- it's roughly 1/2 inch shorter than a normal size 9. I was truly hoping the second generation would fix this (especially since there was so much feedback) but the Outroad 2 has the same issue- it's roughly 1/2 inch shorter than a normal size 9. With the 2, I ordered both 9 and 9.5, eventually settling on the 9.5 because I couldn't stand to sacrifice another big toe nail (i can't cut them any shorter). While the 9.5 isn't too short, it is in every other respect, too big and totally nullifies the benefit of the slim foot shape. I have to lace them much tighter than normal in order to keep my foot locked in. This is a major let down because the snug fit was what I really loved about the size 9 with a slim foot shape (and continue to love about the Vanish). What exacerbates the sloppy fit in a 9.5 is that the heel is more squared off on the 2 and offers less lock.Despite my frustration with the sizing (why is it shorter than the Vanish?!) i'm confident these will continue to be the shoes i run the most. They're incredibly versatile and suite my needs perfectly. My most common routes involve running pavement to get to double track, with frequent deviations onto single track, and the Outroad holds its own on all surfaces. They're quick on pavement, great on dirt and gravel roads and I'm comfortable taking them on all but the most technical or wet single track. One aspect I was glad to see unchanged is the outsole, my gen 1's held up exceedingly well and I wore out the foam in the midsole at about 400 miles with tons of life left on the tread.
